Entrance 3 - Interior Photography, Photomontage

Archival pigment print on hahnemühle Fine Art Paper. Contemporary Photography, Photomontages, Interior Photography. Work Title : "Entrance 3" Artist : Suzanne Moxhay The work is signed and numbered, delivred with certificate of authenticity issued by the artist. Without Frame. Image W32xH42 cm, and W42xH52 cm with white borders. Edition of 40 - Year : 2016 "I get my inspiration from the sense of place in the locations I photograph and how this can trigger certain associations with other things that I have seen or experienced ; From books, films, memories, things I have witnessed. I work very intuitively in this way and it tends to be that when I start making something it begins to follow it’s own path which might not be what I intended at the outset." The London-based artist Suzanne Moxhay, born in 1976, opens up a dreamlike world of photographs that are out of time. After studying at Chelsea College of Art and the Royal Academy Schools, she thwarted the classic codes of photography in her singular assemblages. At the heart of her practice, the collection of images allows her to build up a rich iconographic library. Be it of her own drawings and photographs, or visuals from contemporary or older works. She draws from these elements patiently cut out, extracted from their original context and then reassembled. To do this, the artist is inspired by cinematographic matte painting...

Desert Doll House
Located in New York, NY
Timothy Hursley published Brothels of Nevada: Candid Views of America’s Legal Sex Industry in 2003. (Princeton Architectural Press). Throughout the years 1985 to 2003, Hursley photographed the architectural diversity of Nevada brothels from the grand convention centers to small mobile homes, both operational and abandoned. Although the brothels were often discounted as being unworthy of serious architectural consideration, Hursley poignantly photographed twenty-five of them. A noted detail of the photographs was the exclusion of people. “I sense the people,” Hursley explained, “the footprints of a subculture… a sort of coming together of the owners, the women and the customers, because [in] those rooms I see all three.” Timothy Joseph Hursley is best known as an architectural and art photographer. He learned the art of large-format photography as an apprentice (from age sixteen) to pioneering architectural photographer, Balthazar Korab. Hursley’s works have been exhibited in museums including The Whitney Museum of American Art, The Museum of Modern Art, and the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum. Timothy Hursley, Pocahontas, Arkansas, C-Print documentary photograph, 2016
Located in New York, NY
This color photograph is part of Tim Hursley’s recent series on the American South which embodies the artist's interest in the often untold stories of idiosyncratic places in offbeat, rural areas. The images were shot throughout the South, and this particular image was taken in a junk store in Pocahontas, Arkansas. After much haggling, the artist purchased this taxidermy, two-headed calf for his own collection. Timothy Joseph Hursley is best known as an architectural and art photographer. He learned the art of large-format photography as an apprentice (from age sixteen) to pioneering architectural photographer, Balthazar Korab...

Photography, Drawings, Prints, Sculptures and Paintings for Sale

Whether growing your current fine art collection or taking the first steps on that journey, you will find an extensive range of original photography, drawings, prints, sculptures, paintings and more on 1stDibs.

Visual art is among the oldest forms of expression, and it has been evolving for centuries. Beautiful objects can provide a window to the past or insight into our current time. Art collecting enhances daily life through the presence of meaningful work. It displays an appreciation for culture, whether a print by Elizabeth Catlett channeling social change or a narrative quilt by Faith Ringgold.

Contemporary art has lured more initiates to collecting than almost any other category, with notable artists including Yayoi Kusama, Marc Chagall, Kehinde Wiley and Jean-Michel Basquiat. Navigating the waiting lists for the next Marlene Dumas, Jeff Koons or Jasper Johns has become competitive.

When you’re living with art, particularly as people more often work from home and enjoy their spaces, it’s important to choose art that resonates with you. While the richness of art with its many movements, styles and histories can be overwhelming, the key is to identify what is appealing and inspiring. Artwork can play with the surrounding color of a room, creating a layered approach. The dynamic shapes and sizes of sculptures can set different moods, such as a bronze by Miguel Guía on a mantel or an Alexander Calder mobile suspended over a table. A wall of art can evoke emotions in an interior while showing off your tastes and interests. A salon-style wall mixing eclectic pieces like landscape paintings with charcoal drawings is a unique way to transform a space and show off a collection.

For art meditating on the subconscious, investigate Surrealists like Joan Miró and Salvador Dalí. Explore Pop art and its leading artists such as Andy Warhol, Rosalyn Drexler and Keith Haring for bright and bold colors. Not only did these artists question art itself, but also how we perceive society. Similarly, 20th-century photography and abstract painting reconsidered the intent of art.

Abstract Expressionists like Helen Frankenthaler and Lee Krasner and Color Field artists including Sam Gilliam broke from conventional ideas of painting, while Op artists such as Yaacov Agam embraced visual trickery and kinetic movement. Novel visuals are also integral to contemporary work influenced by street art, such as sculptures and prints by KAWS.

Realist portraiture is a global tradition reflecting on what makes us human. This is reflected in the work of Slim Aarons, an American photographer whose images are at once candid and polished and appeared in Holiday magazine and elsewhere. Innovative artists Mickalene Thomas and Kerry James Marshall are now offering new perspectives on the form.

Collecting art is a rewarding, lifelong pursuit that can help connect you with the creative ways historic, modern and contemporary artists have engaged with the world. For more tips on piecing together an art collection, see our guide to buying and displaying art.
