It is signed and dated 83 in the bottom right. Pierre was very sensitive to abstract paintings. He did a lot of abstract works melting colors and shapes in different atmosphere and style. Nevertheless he could come back to figuration and again to abstraction with no precise period of time. Provenance : Workshop of the artist Pierre Coquet (1926-2021) is a French painter who was born in Limas near Lyon, France. He entered the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Lyon in 1942 and followed the teaching of Antoine Chartres, Henri Vielly and René Chancrin. He won a prize in 1945 and joined a movement that wanted to be outside of any school whose name ends with “ism”, (like impressionism, cubism…) between figuration and the renaissance of Abstract Art, bringing together young generations under thirty and eager not to submit to any technique. The “Sanzism” (literally without « ism ») will bring together, among others, painters: James Bansac, Roger Bravard, André Chaix, Jean Mélinand, Paul Clair, André Cottavoz, Pierre Doye, Jean Fusaro, Jacques Truphémus, André Lauran, Edouard Mouriquand, Pierre Palué, Paul Philibert-Charrin, Antoine Sanner and Françoise Juvin. The latter will become his wife in 1948. In 1949, he participated in an exhibition in Geneva, at the Musée de l'Athénée, entitled "Eleven French painters" with Jacques Truphémus and Jean Fusaro. Françoise and Pierre moved to Paris in 1950. There he met Alexandre Garbell, who encouraged him and whom he attended classes in his academy on Boulevard de Clichy. Working as an art teacher at the Corvisart school in Paris he painted a lot beside this activity. His main subjects are “assemblages of objects” which evoke the memory of Giorgio Morandi, the roofs of Paris, still lifes, characters in situation, and abstraction. This sincere and modest man, turned inward in a climate of deep meditation, likes to express his feeling that “all painters encounter the same difficulties in wanting to express unspeakable emotions with painting. In 1970 he began his studies in Drawing, Painting and Sculpture at the Regional School of Ica. He is a graduate of the National Superior Autonomous School of Fine Arts of Peru (1971-1976) with honorable mention, forming the promotion "Juan Manuel Ugarte Eléspuru". "Iqueño Expressionism" is the title of the exhibition that will be available to the public from May 25 to June 13 in the "Paracas" Room of the "Adolfo Bermúdez Jenkins" Regional Museum of Ica. Av. Ayabaca block 8°. Miguel Angel Aybar is a painter who characterizes expressionism in Ica without a doubt. His songs speak of longing, and secret friendships with the hurango, the palm tree of Huacachina or the silent and still sand of Ica. His work is primarily characterized by color. The contrasts between the intense dark contrasted with the radiance of reds, oranges, yellows or greens, achieve a positive effect on the observer. In the 1980s, Thelma Appel was represented by the renowned Jill Kornblee Gallery and, after Ms. Kornblee retired, Appel joined the legendary Fischbach Gallery, (the gallery of record for Alex Katz for many decades,) also on West 57th Street, before they shuttered. After leaving Manhattan, she retreated from the art world for several decades; however, in recent years, her work is being rediscovered by a generation of new collectors. A beloved and popular teacher, at 87 years of age, Thelma could still be found teaching “The Art of Painting” at Artsplace in Cheshire, CT. and at the Osher Life Long Learning Institute (OLLI) At the University of Connecticut, near her home during the 2024-5 Fall/Winter Semester. In 2019, she was subject of a 50-year career survey (October, 2019 -February 2020) at the Brattleboro Museum in Vermont, entitled Thelma Appel: Abstract/Observed curated by Mara Williams. She has also exhibited at the Mattatuck Museum in Connecticut, which acquired one of her fabric collages for their permanent collection, the Bennington Museum in Vermont and the Police Museum in Lower Manhattan. Thelma Appel was born in Tel Aviv, Israel, but following her parents’ divorce, her father remained in Israel, but her mother emigrated to London to pursue a career as a journalist. However, she soon became ill, and Thelma was sent alone to be educated in a Protestant missionary schools in Darjeeling, India, a geographical displacement that would impact her life and her work. Thelma returned to London, England, to study art at the legendary St. Martin's School of Art (later Central St. Martins) and Hornsey College of Art, under such renowned teachers as Joe Tilson and Eduardo Paolozzi, before emigrating to the United States in the 1960s. Her work has been exhibited in numerous venues, including the Bennington Museum, the Berkshire Museum in North Adams, Mass., the Children's Museum of the Arts in New York City, the Mattatuck Museum, the Brattleboro Museum, the Milwaukee Art Museum, the Robert Hull Fleming Museum at the University of Vermont and the University of Pennsylvania Fine Arts Gallery. In 1974 she was awarded a YADDO Fellowship, and in 1975, Thelma Appel, along with the painter Carol Haerer, co-founded the Bennington College Summer Painting Workshop, where many distinguished painters of the day, both abstract and representational, conducted master classes. Among them were Neil Welliver, John Button, Alice Neel, Larry Poons, Friedel Dzubas, Stanley Boxer, Elizabeth Murray and Doug Ohlson – a program that continued until 1980. (One of Thelma’s students was the renowned art dealer Matthew Marks.) She has also taught drawing at Parsons School of Design, painting at Southern Vermont College and at the University of Connecticut. Appel’s work has been presented at Art on Paper, Texas Contemporary, Market Art & Design in Bridgehampton and Art New York art fair, which selected Appel’s Times Square series of paintings for their invitational public Project Space sponsored by Absolut Vodka. She was one of the winning artists of the juried exhibition “Pets of the Pandemic” juried by art historian and critic David Cohen, publisher and editor of artcritical, who cited it for special commendation as a “masterful portrait”. This 11" x 14" oil on canvas painting is by Boston-based artist, Anthony Dyke. A beautiful and important painting by the great artist Enzo Benedetto, an absolute protagonist of the so-called ‘Second Futurism’. It depicts a seascape captured in its essence of natural energy with the waves of the sea crashing powerfully on the coast, probably a glimpse of his homeland, Calabria. This artwork, never before on the market, comes from an important Italian private collection. Enzo Benedetto (Reggio Calabria 1905 - Rome 1993) Benedetto, called Record by Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, approached the Second Futurism in 1924 after meeting Mino Somenzi and was active as a Futurist until his death, becoming a tenacious continuer of the movement's principles, revisited in 1967 with the Futurism Today manifesto. Benedetto theorised and practised the union of colour with the word and coined the term chrome-paroise to define the synthesis of painting and writing. In 1926 he promoted the futurist hall for the 4th Calabrian Art Biennial in Reggio Calabria where Depero, Dottori, Tato, Fillia, Pozzo, Benedetto Marinetti and himself, amongst others, exhibited. In 1927 he participated in the National Futurist Exhibition in Palermo. He moved permanently to Rome in 1927 and joined the Manifesto in 1931. In a short time he took part in the ‘great Futurist exhibition’ in Imola, the ‘first exhibition of Calabrian art’ in Rome, the ‘33 Futurists’ exhibition at the Pesaro gallery in Milan, and above all the ‘great Futurist exhibition’ at the ‘international artistic circle’ in Via Margutta in Rome. Benedetto had begun flying in 1926, as a photo of the time documents. That same year, inspired by the exploits of the aviator of the same name, he had executed the painting De Pinedo. He adhered to the Manifesto already signed by Balla, Marinetti, Depero, Dottori, Tato, Prampolini and Fillia, which advocated the triumph of a spatiality enhanced by flight in its dynamic effects and freed from the fixity of the horizon. In World War II he was imprisoned in Africa by British troops until the end of the conflict. Benedetto continued his Futurist activities in the second half of the 20th century. From 1939 to 1946 he volunteered for the African campaign and was sent to Libya, after which he was imprisoned for six years in the concentration camps in Alexandria, Ismailia, and in India in Bangalore and Yol in Kashmir. During this imprisonment he was able to paint and some canvases from this period were brought back to Italy, rolled up as personal luggage, In January 1943, he painted Yol, a new psychological oil portrait of Francesco Tommaso Marinetti. In 1946, he returned to Italy and in April 1947 presented his first solo exhibition in Rome. The exhibition dedicated to the great Italian poet and founder of Futurism was opened by Benedetta Marinetti. In World War II he was imprisoned in Africa by British troops until the end of the conflict. Benedetto continued his Futurist activities in the second half of the 20th century. In 1946, he returned to Italy and in April 1947 presented his first solo exhibition in Rome. In 1948 he had a personal exhibition in Capri at the gallery, ‘l'oblò’, and in Reggio Calabria in the Hall of the ‘Francesco Cilea’ Municipal Theatre. In 1949 he took part in the Calabrian Biennial in Reggio Calabria. In 1950 quanta took part with ceramics in the Selective Exhibition of Artistic Craftsmanship in the Angelicum in Milan, and with paintings in the Historical Review of Futurism in the Palazzo di Re Enzo in Bologna. He then held an important solo exhibition in Milan, at the ‘Centro d'Arte San Babila’ and participated in the sixth Quadrennial in Rome. He had a solo exhibition in Fano and another exhibition in Rome in the Galleria del Palazzo delle Esposizioni and in the Galleria del Teatro ‘il Millimetro’. In 1951 he took part in the collective exhibition ‘Mostra Nazionale della Pittura e della Scultura futurista’ (National Exhibition of Futurist Painting and Sculpture) in Bologna, Palazzo del Podestà, with Acquaviva, Giacomo Balla, Primo Conti, Tullio Crali, Fortunato Depero and Gerardo Dottori. In 1953 he took part in the exhibition ‘l'arte nella vita del mezzogiorno’ (art in the life of southern Italy) in Rome and was included in the jury for the awarding of prizes. He also took part in the third exhibition ‘il maggio di Bari’ and in the ‘biennale del mare’ in Rimini. From 1954 to 1960 he took part in many collective exhibitions such as the ‘Sesto Maggio di Bari’, the ‘Villa San Giovanni’ award, the ‘Terni award’, the ‘Avezzano award’, the fifth exhibition of the ‘Triglia d'Oro’, the Michetti award, a personal exhibition in Varese, at the ‘piccola permanente’ In 1961, he stayed in Munich in Germany and exhibited at the Schoeninger Gallery and in the city's ‘Kuntz-Cabnier-Klimt’ studio. Encouraged by his long-standing friendship with Emilio Pettoruti, he also stayed in Paris, where he painted syntheses of the city that were very successful. In 1962, he held a personal exhibition in Venice at the San Vidal gallery and another in Munich at the Wolfgang Gurlit gallery.
