This stunning exhibited Impressionist Scottish Victorian pastoral oil painting is by noted Scottish Kirkcudbright artist William Mouncey. Painted in 1889 it has the wonderful bold brushwork, impasto and colouring of Scottish art, showing the influences of close friends Glasgow Boy E A Hornel and George Henry. In the foreground children and cattle enjoy cooling off in a stream edged by trees with dwellings beyond, beneath a summers sky. A really lovely vibrant painting and an excellent example of Mouncey's work which wouldn't be out of place in the Kelvingrove Art Gallery in Glasgow.

Provenance. Exhibited Royal Scottish Academy 1889 no 255, Galloway Pastoral.
Condition. Oil on canvas 35 inches by 29 inches and in good condition.
Frame. Housed in a complementary Victorian Watts gilded frame, 43 inches by 37 inches and in good condition.
William Mouncey (1852-1901). Mouncey was born and died in Kirkcudbright and worked as a house painter and decorator before becoming a full-time landscape artist. He spent most of his life at Kirkcudbright, much influenced by Glasgow Boy and close friend, E.A. Hornel, whose sister he married. Devoted to his native countryside, he represented it in warm and mellow colours and used the impasto technique to apply the paint. Mouncey exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy and at The Glasgow Institute and benefited from the patronage of dealers James Connell & Sons, Glasgow. His paintings were clear and luminous in colour and the sentiment in many of his paintings had much in common with Monticelli, Corot, Hobbema, Linnell, Constable and Maris whose work he admired.
Exhibited: RSA 37, GI 26, AAS and L 3. Represented in Glasgow, Kirkcaldy and Paisley Art Galleries.
