Post-Impressionist Prints and Multiples
POSTIMPRESSIONIST STYLE
In the revolutionary wake of Impressionism, artists like Vincent van Gogh, Georges Seurat, Paul Cézanne and Paul Gauguin advanced the style further while firmly rejecting its limitations. Although the artists now associated with Postimpressionist art did not work as part of a group, they collectively employed an approach to expressing moments in time that was even more abstract than that of the Impressionists, and they shared an interest in moving away from naturalistic depictions to more subjective uses of vivid colors and light in their paintings.
The eighth and final Impressionist exhibition was held in Paris in 1886, and Postimpressionism — also spelled Post-Impressionism — is usually dated between then and 1905. The term “Postimpressionism” was coined by British curator and art critic Roger Fry in 1910 at the “Manet and the Postimpressionists” exhibition in London that connected their practices to the pioneering modernist art of Édouard Manet. Many Postimpressionist artists — most of whom lived in France — utilized thickly applied, vibrant pigments that emphasized the brushstrokes on the canvas.
The Postimpressionist movement’s iconic works of art include van Gogh’s The Starry Night (1889) and Seurat’s A Sunday on La Grande Jatte (1884). Seurat’s approach reflected the experimental spirit of Postimpressionism, as he used Pointillist dots of color that were mixed by the eye of the viewer rather than the hand of the artist. Van Gogh, meanwhile, often based his paintings on observation, yet instilled them with an emotional and personal perspective in which colors and forms did not mirror reality. Alongside Mary Cassatt, Cézanne, Henri Matisse and Gauguin, the Dutch painter was a pupil of Camille Pissarro, the groundbreaking Impressionist artist who boldly organized the first independent painting exhibitions in late-19th-century Paris.
The boundary-expanding work of the Postimpressionist painters, which focused on real-life subject matter and featured a prioritization of geometric forms, would inspire the Nabis, German Expressionism, Cubism and other modern art movements to continue to explore abstraction and challenge expectations for art.

This artwork titled "The Zealot" c.1950 is an original woodcut by Hungarian/American artist Julius F. Faysash, 1904-1977. It is hand signed, titled and numbered 4/50 in pencil by the artist. The image (woodblock mark) is 10 x 8 inches, framed size is 18 x 15 inches. Custom framed in a wooden grey frame and light beige matting. It is in very good condition.
About the artist:
Julius F. Faysash was born 1904 in Budapest Hungary. He and his family moved to the United States in 1914. His father, Emanuel Faysash was a cabinet maker and settled in Cleveland Ohio area. A short time later the family moved to Akron, Ohio where Faysash remained the rest of his life.
Julius graduated from the Cleveland School of Art and attended Akron University in 1927. He was a founding member of the Akron Society of Artists in 1931 and was the president of the Society in 1934 and 1946. He was an illustrator for the Firestone Company from the 1940's until his retirement from the company in 1969, mainly working in watercolor for this time period.
After retirement he began traveling to Mexico 6 months out of the year and began working in oils, acrylics and printmaking. He received an M.F.A. in 1973 from the Instituto Allende/University of Guanajuato, Mexico. He also had further studies under Henry G. Keller and in portraiture with Wayman Adams, Sandor Vago...

Masuo Ikeda (Japanese, 1934 - 1997) was born in 1934. Masuo Ikeda is well known a Japanese painter, printmaker, illustrator, sculptor, ceramist, novelist, and film director. He started winning prize after prize in the 1960s: the Governor of Tokyo's Prize (1962), the Tokyo Museum of Modern Art Prize (1964). In 1961 he had established himself as a printmaker by winning the Grand Prize for Printmaking at the Tokyo International Biennale of Art, but it was in foreign parts that he achieved his greatest triumphs: in 1961 the Prix d'Excellence at the Young Artists' International Biennale in Paris; in 1965 the Grand Prix at the International Print-making Biennale in Ljubljana; in 1966, the First Prize at the International Engraving Biennale in Cracow, and first prizes at the Biennales of Vienna and Venice, where he was only the second Japanese to win in this category, after Munakata Shiko in 1956. He was the first Japanese to have a one-man show at the New York Museum of Modern Art (1965). He was always on the move and spent two years in New York (1965-66), then settled for a year in Berlin (1967). Ikeda was producing prints in his studio in New York from 1969, he returned to Japan in 1980 and was based there from then on, and extended his brilliant talent beyond printmaking. In 1977, he won the 77th Akutagawa Prize (the most prestigious literary award in Japan) for his novel, Offering in the Aegean, and directed the film adaptation of the same title in 1979. This lithograph was published by Gazette des Beaux-Arts. The Gazette des Beaux-Arts was a French art review, found in 1859 by Édouard Houssaye, with Charles Blanc as its first chief editor. Assia Visson Rubinstein was chief editor under the direction of George Wildenstein from 1928 until 1960. Her papers, which include all editions of the Gazette from this period, are intact at the Cantonal and University Library of Lausanne in Dorigny. The Gazette was a world reference work on art history for nearly 100 years - one other editor in chief, from 1955 to 1987, was Jean Adhémar. It was bought in 1928 by the Wildenstein family, whose last representative was Daniel Wildenstein, its director from 1963 until his death in 2001. The review closed in 2002.
Biography:
Sidaner, (7 August 1862 – July 1939), an intimist painter, born to a French family in Port Louis, Mauritius. In 1870 he and his family settled in Dunkirk. Le Sidaner received most of his tutelage from the École des Beaux-Arts under the instruction of Alexandre Cabanel but later broke away due to artistic differences. Between 1885 and 1894 Le Sidaner lived the year round at the Etaples art colony and was joined there by his childhood friend Eugène Chigot (1860–1923), who shared his interest in atmospheric light. Later Le Sidaner traveled extensively throughout France. He also visited many cities around the globe, as well as villages throughout Europe. He exhibited at the Salon, the Galeries Georges Petit in Paris and the Goupil Gallery in London, and settled in Gerberoy. Marcel Proust's mention of Le Sidaner's work in his novel In Search of Lost Time confirms its later reputation. In Sodom and Gomorrah...
