How Much is a Deco Gold Jewelry?
A Close Look at art-deco Jewelry
Fascination with the Jazz Age is endless, and even today jewelry designers continue to be inspired by authentic Art Deco jewelry and watches.
The Art Deco period, encompassing the 1920s and ’30s, ushered in a very distinct look in the design of jewelry. There were many influences on the jewelry of the era that actually began to take shape prior to the 1920s. In 1909, Serge Diaghilev brought the Ballet Russes to Paris, and women went wild for the company’s exotic and vibrant costumes It’s no wonder, then, that jade, lapis lazuli, coral, turquoise and other bright gemstones became all the rage. There already existed a fascination with the East, particularly China and Japan, and motifs consisting of fans and masks started to show up in Art Deco jewelry.
However, the event that had the greatest influence on Deco was the excavation of the tomb of King Tut in 1922. When the world saw what was hidden in Tut’s burial chamber, it sent just about everyone into a frenzy. Pierre Cartier wrote in 1923 that “the discovery of the tomb will bring some sweeping changes in fashion jewelry.” And he couldn’t have been more right. “Egyptomania” left an indelible mark on all of the major jewelry houses, from Cartier to Van Cleef & Arpels, Boucheron and Georges Fouquet. (Cartier created some of the most iconic jewelry designs that defined this era.)
While a lot of Art Deco jewelry was black and white — the black coming from the use of onyx or black enamel and the white from rock crystal and diamonds — there is plenty of color in jewelry of the era. A perfect accent to diamonds in platinum settings were blue sapphires, emeralds and rubies, and these stones were also used in combination with each other.
Many designers employed coral, jade and lapis lazuli, too. In fact, some of the most important avant-garde jewelers of the period, like Jean Després and Jean Fouquet (son of Georges), would combine white gold with ebony and malachite for a jolt of color.
A lot of the jewelry produced during this time nodded to current fashion trends, and women often accessorized their accessories. The cloche hat was often accented with geometric diamond brooches or double-clip brooches. Backless evening dresses looked fabulous with sautoir necklaces, and long pearl necklaces that ended with tassels, popular during the Edwardian period, were favored by women everywhere, including Coco Chanel.

- 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 13, 2023There are many differences between Edwardian and Art Deco jewelry. Antique Edwardian jewelry is named for King Edward VII of Great Britain, who ruled from 1901 until 1910, while the Art Deco period emerged later. Jewelry created in the Art Deco style was made during the 1920s and ’30s. During the Edwardian era, pearls were more valuable than diamonds, and jewelry was all about the exquisite diamond, platinum and pearl creations made by such famous names as Cartier and Boucheron. Cartier also created some of the most iconic jewelry designs that defined Art Deco, an era that saw designers drawing on Egyptian adornment and African art, and accessories featuring jade, lapis lazuli, coral, turquoise and other bright gemstones became all the rage. Shop antique Art Deco and Edwardian jewelry on 1stDibs.

- 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022No, 22k gold is not too soft for jewelry, but it’s considered too soft for everyday wear. You may find some special pieces that are made of 22k gold or that have 22k gold in them, especially antique jewelry, but regular wear will quickly cause 22k gold to become misshapen and scratched. Shop a collection of 22k gold jewelry from some of the world’s top sellers on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertApril 12, 2024What the letters on gold jewelry mean varies. The letter P means that a piece is plumb and contains an exact amount of precious metal. For example, 14P would be plumb 14-karat and contain exactly 58.5% pure gold. GP indicates that the jewelry is gold-plated, while an R represents rolled gold. The meaning of GF is gold-filled, and the letters HGE denote that a piece has heavy gold electroplating. On 1stDibs, shop a large selection of gold jewelry.
- Is 24K gold good for jewelry?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022Whether or not 24 karat gold is suitable for jewelry making will depend on your lifestyle and jewelry needs. Because 24 karat gold is pure gold, it is not often used for jewelry because it’s softer and less durable than mixed metal gold. However, it’s highly favored for home decor accents due to its bright yellow hue. Shop a collection of 24 karat gold pieces on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022No, while gold nuggets can be melted down and crafted into pure gold, gold nuggets in their raw form are not deemed to be “jewelry-grade.” While actual gold nuggets aren’t crafted into jewelry pieces, gold is often molded to mimic an organic shape similar to that of a nugget. Shop a selection of gold jewelry on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022To tell if jewelry is antique gold, take it to a licensed appraiser experienced in evaluating jewelry. It is difficult to identify jewelry materials using only the naked eye and online resources. On 1stDibs, shop a collection of expertly vetted gold jewelry.
- Is Trifari jewelry real gold?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertDecember 4, 2023Whether Trifari jewelry is real gold depends on its age. Jewelry produced by the brand between 1904 and 1946 usually features genuine gold, but newer pieces typically do not. In 1947, the jewelry maker introduced a patented metal alloy called Trifanium. Its unique properties made the metal able to resist tarnishing and allowed it to be plated with other metals to create a gold- or silver-tone finish. Trifari called this gold jewelry golden-toned Trifanium. On 1stDibs, shop a diverse assortment of Trifari jewelry.
- Is Roman jewelry real gold?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertFebruary 13, 2024Yes, some Roman jewelry is gold. In fact, gold was the material most favored by ancient Roman jewelry makers. However, they also worked with other metals, including iron, copper and silver, when crafting rings, earrings, brooches, necklaces and pendants. Find a large collection of gold jewelry from some of the world's best sellers on 1stDibs.
- Is Krementz jewelry real gold?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertFebruary 13, 2024Yes, some Krementz jewelry is real gold. However, the maker typically produced gold-plated rather than full-gold pieces. Most Kremetz gold-plating features 18-karat gold, which is an alloy consisting of 75% pure gold and 25% base metal. Kremetz also made platinum-plated pieces. - 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022Indian gold is 100% pure 24 karat gold, and is very yellow in color because it is not mixed with other alloys. People from India buy this gold as an investment as well as for jewelry, and there are far fewer buyers of 18 karat and 22 karat gold. Shop a collection of Indian gold jewelry from some of the worlds top sellers on 1stDibs.
