Artist: Treadway Russell Nash (English, 1724-1811) Title: "A View of Stourbridge", "A View of Upton upon Severn, from Ryal Hill", "Bewdley", and "Tenbury" Portfolio: Collections for the History of Worcestershire Year: 1781-1782 (First edition) Medium: Set of Four Original Engravings on watermarked laid paper Limited edition: Unknown Printer: John Nichols, London, UK Publisher: T. Payne and Son, J. Robson, B. White, Leigh and Sotheby, London, UK; Fletcher, Oxford, UK; and Lewis, Worcester, UK Sheet size (each): approx. 10" x 16.5" Image size (each): approx. 6.88" x 11.75" Reference: Upcott III, page 1330 Condition: A few light handling creases. Have been professionally stored away for decades. They are all strong impressions in excellent condition Notes: Provenance: private collection - Aspen, CO. All four works were engraved by English artist Thomas Sanders (Active: Mid-Late 18th Century) after drawings by himself. Comes from Nash's two volume "Collections for the History of Worcestershire", (1781-1782) (First edition), which consists of 75 engravings. Each work is printed from one copper plate in one color: black. There was a (Second edition) "with Additions" bound in with Volume II of this portfolio published by John White in 1799. And, both the First and Second editions of "Collections for the History of Worcestershire" are based off Thomas Sanders' 1779-1781 "Perspective Views of the Market Towns within the County of Worcester". Both "A View of Stourbridge" and "A View of Upton upon Severn, from Ryal Hill" have unidentified fleur-de-lis watermarks in the center of their sheets. "Bewdley" has an unidentified watermark in the center of its sheet resembling "XV" and "Tenbury" has no watermark. Biography: Treadway Russell Nash (24 June 1724 – 26 January 1811) was an English clergyman, now known as an early historian of Worcestershire and the author of Collections for the History of Worcestershire, an important source document for Worcestershire county histories. He was a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London. Treadway Russell Nash was born on 24 June 1724 born at Clerkenleap, in Kempsey, Worcestershire. His family were from Ombersley. They had lands there and at Claines, and had later bought lands in the Reformation around St Peter's, Droitwich. He was related to James Nash and John Nash, both MPs for Worcester. His father Richard, a grandson of Sir Rowland Berkeley, died in 1740, and Richard's eldest son in 1757. As a result, Treadway Russell Nash inherited the Russells' Strensham estates from his brother, as well as the Nash estates, and took both names. He was educated from the age of twelve at King's School, Worcester, and became a scholar at Worcester College, Oxford aged fifteen. In March 1749, he accompanied his brother on a trip to the continent, to aid Richard's health. They visited Paris for about six weeks, before spending the summer "on the banks of the Loire". They then visited "Bourdeaux, Thoulouse, Montpelier, Marseilles, Leghorn, Florence, Rome, Naples, Bologna, Venice, Padua, Verona, Milan, Lyons, and again Paris"; such expeditions are often known as the Grand Tour. On his return in late summer 1751, Nash took up a post as Vicar of Eynsham through his friend and future brother-in-law, John Martin. He also had an income as a tutor at Oxford. He took his Doctor of Divinity degree and left Oxford, having "gone out grand compounder", following the death of his brother. He also left his benefice at Eynsham in 1757. While at Oxford he had proposed a road from there to Witney (now the A40 and B4022), and also stood for Parliament. Nash married Margaret Martin...

'Five Storied Pagoda' — 1940s Signed Woodblock Print, Early Edition

'Five Storied Pagoda' — 1940s Signed Woodblock Print, Early Edition

Located in Myrtle Beach, SC

Toshi Yoshida, 'Five-Storied Pagoda,' also titled 'Pagoda in Kyoto' (Gojū no tō / 五重の塔), color woodblock print, 1942, edition not stated. Signed 'Toshi Yoshida' in pencil; signed 遠志 (Tōshi) and sealed in the image, lower right; titled 'Five-Storied Pagoda', and dated in Japanese in the left margin, and bearing the characters 自刻 (jikoku, “self-carved”), confirming that Yoshida himself carved the blocks. A superb, atmospheric, impression, with skilled bokashi (gradations) and finely nuanced colors, on cream wove Japanese paper; the full sheet, in excellent condition, (apparently never mounted or framed). Self-carved and self-printed by the artist. Archivally sleeved, unmatted. Image size 9 1/2 x 6 3/4 inches (241 x 171 mm); sheet size approximately 10 1/2 x 7 7/8 inches (267 x 200 mm). Catalog References: The design is catalogued in the developing Toshi Yoshida Catalogue as Pagoda in Kyoto / 五重の塔, 1942, color woodblock. It is also documented by Art Platform Japan from the Fukuoka Art Museum's own collection data as 'Five-Storied Pagoda', 1942. Literature: Thomas Tabery and Kevin Schumacher-Shoji, eds., Farben Japans: Holzschnitte aus der Sammlung der Bayerischen Staatsbibliothek, Kerber Verlag, 2025, no. 146. Exhibited: Farben Japans – Holzschnitte aus der Sammlung der Bayerischen Staatsbibliothek, Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, Munich, March 27–July 6, 2025, no. 146. The Bavarian State Library's 2025 annual exhibition and the first exhibition in the institution's history devoted specifically to its Japanese color woodblock collection. More than 130 works spanning the 18th through 20th centuries were presented. Collections: Allen Memorial Art Museum, Oberlin College; Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, British Columbia; Bavarian State Library (Bayerische Staatsbibliothek), Munich; British Museum, Fukuoka Art Museum, Japan; Smithsonian National Museum of Asian Art. ABOUT THIS WORK Created in 1942, Pagoda in Kyoto (Gojū no tō / 五重の塔) is an early work by Toshi Yoshida, still closely connected to the shin-hanga aesthetic associated with his father, Hiroshi Yoshida, yet already demonstrating Toshi's exceptional command of the woodblock medium. A five-storied pagoda rises behind a screen of weeping willows beside a quiet pond, its architectural mass softened by the atmospheric light of evening. The composition is constructed through overlapping silhouettes and unusually delicate gradations of blue, violet, green, and rose, giving the scene a dreamlike stillness. This impression is distinguished by the exceptional subtlety of its printing. The sky passes almost imperceptibly from warm pink through lavender and violet, allowing the pagoda to dissolve into the surrounding atmosphere. The willow is built from several closely related greens and blue-greens, while the water is printed with restrained tonal modulation. These effects depend upon sophisticated bokashi and careful hand application of pigment and are markedly more nuanced than those seen in later impressions of the design. ABOUT THE ARTIST Yoshida Toshi (1911–1995) began training at the age of fourteen under his father, Yoshida Hiroshi, a leading artist of the twentieth-century Japanese printmaking revival known as shin-hanga (“new prints”), which continued the traditional collaborative system of Japanese woodblock printing. From 1932 to 1935, Toshi studied at the Taiheiyo-Gakai (Pacific Painting Association), which his father had helped establish. Before the Pacific War, Toshi traveled extensively with his father in Asia, Europe, Egypt, and the United States. He later continued his international travels, particularly in Mexico, the United States, Canada, and Africa. His early prints remained strongly influenced by Hiroshi's work and the highly refined techniques practiced in the Yoshida studio. Following his father's death in 1950, Toshi assumed responsibility for the studio while increasingly pursuing an independent artistic direction. Beginning in the early 1950s, he undertook a highly personal exploration of abstraction, creating and printing his own works in the sōsaku-hanga (“creative print”) manner, in which the artist assumes direct responsibility for the design, carving, and printing. During this exceptionally productive period, Toshi produced a large body of nonobjective woodcuts characterized by complex geometric structures, richly layered color, and experimentation with the expressive possibilities of the woodblock medium. His abstract work placed him among the more adventurous Japanese printmakers of the postwar period. The British Museum holds a substantial group of these works, including Misty Dance (1957), Frontier (1962), Mystery (1964), Isotope (1968), and Where (1972). In the early 1960s, Toshi also returned to representational subjects, eventually concentrating on large-scale scenes of African wildlife in its natural habitat. In 1984 he published the first of a series of illustrated children's books devoted to African animals (Dōbutsu Ehon Shirīzu), which he continued into the early 1990s. In 1966, with artist Yuki Rei...

Fine Art Prints for Sale — Animal Prints, Abstract Prints, Nude Prints and Other Prints

Decorating with fine art prints — whether they’re figurative prints, abstract prints or another variety — has always been a practical way of bringing a space to life as well as bringing works by an artist you love into your home.

Pursued in the 1960s and ’70s, largely by Pop artists drawn to its associations with mass production, advertising, packaging and seriality, as well as those challenging the primacy of the Abstract Expressionist brushstroke, printmaking was embraced in the 1980s by painters and conceptual artists ranging from David Salle and Elizabeth Murray to Adrian Piper and Sherrie Levine.

Printmaking is the transfer of an image from one surface to another. An artist takes a material like stone, metal, wood or wax, carves, incises, draws or otherwise marks it with an image, inks or paints it and then transfers the image to a piece of paper or other material.

Fine art prints are frequently confused with their more commercial counterparts. After all, our closest connection to the printed image is through mass-produced newspapers, magazines and books, and many people don’t realize that even though prints are editions, they start with an original image created by an artist with the intent of reproducing it in a small batch. Fine art prints are created in strictly limited editions — 20 or 30 or maybe 50 — and are always based on an image created specifically to be made into an edition.

Many people think of revered Dutch artist Rembrandt as a painter but may not know that he was a printmaker as well. His prints have been preserved in time along with the work of other celebrated printmakers such as Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dalí and Andy Warhol. These fine art prints are still highly sought after by collectors.

“It’s another tool in the artist’s toolbox, just like painting or sculpture or anything else that an artist uses in the service of mark making or expressing him- or herself,” says International Fine Print Dealers Association (IFPDA) vice president Betsy Senior, of New York’s Betsy Senior Fine Art, Inc.

Because artist’s editions tend to be more affordable and available than his or her unique works, they’re more accessible and can be a great opportunity to bring a variety of colors, textures and shapes into a space.

For tight corners, select small fine art prints as opposed to the oversized bold piece you’ll hang as a focal point in the dining area. But be careful not to choose something that is too big for your space. And feel free to lean into it if need be — not every work needs picture-hanging hooks. Leaning a larger fine art print against the wall behind a bookcase can add a stylish installation-type dynamic to your living room. (Read more about how to arrange wall art here.)
