'Sea Anemone' Table Light with Black Bronze by Pia Maria Raeder
By Pia-Maria Raeder 1
Located in Paris, FR

She has become globally known for her ’Sea Anemone’ collection that reflects the beauty found on the ocean floor. Work by the artist is included in the permanent collection of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs de Paris, France. Each the fruit of hundreds of working hours, her ‘Sea Anemone’ sculptures are handcrafted from thousands of beechwood rods that are cut, sanded, arranged one by one and then lacquered. 'Sea Anemone' Sculpture by Pia Maria Raeder
By Pia-Maria Raeder 1
Located in Paris, FR
From simple beech rods that were patiently cut, sanded, arranged and lacquered, Pia Maria Raeder creates refined sculptures which evoke biomorphic forms. Each work is handcrafted by the artist. 2,000 beech rods were necessary to produce this 'Sea Anemone' sculpture. “In my work with beech rods, I love the challenge of overcoming the contradictions in the material as I play with it. Natural beech rods are straight, but combined at different heights, these rods take on a new form resembling a wave with shadowy reflections. A wooden rod, that is rigid in itself, becomes soft and rounded once sanded. The application of lacquer on the rods arranged in large numbers transforms the wood and underlines its movements.” Emancipated from its limits, the wood is offered a newfound freedom. The breath of...

'Sea Anemones' Floor Lamps by Pia Maria Raeder
By Pia-Maria Raeder 1
Located in Paris, FR
From thousands of simple beech rods patiently cut, sanded and arranged one by one, Pia Maria Raeder creates refined functional sculptures that evoke biomorphic forms. The 'Sea Anemones' floor light sculptures are the first lighting pieces ever produced by the artist. According to Pia Maria’s own words: 'These pieces are both floor lamps inspired by nature, and peaceful, softly beaming creatures with an endearing presence. They surprise us with a new appearance when you look at them from different angles.’ Every part of the lights is a reference to nature: the blown glasses are inspired by frozen crystals; the texturized structure of the bronze bases remind of tree barks and the lacquered beech rods of the heads are arranged like sea anemones. The breath of nature...
