Finding the Right Seating for You

With entire areas of our homes reserved for “sitting rooms,” the value of quality antique and vintage seating cannot be overstated.

Fortunately, the design of side chairs, armchairs and other lounge furniture — since what were, quite literally, the early perches of our ancestors — has evolved considerably.

Among the earliest standard seating furniture were stools. Egyptian stools, for example, designed for one person with no seat back, were x-shaped and typically folded to be tucked away. These rudimentary chairs informed the design of Greek and Roman stools, all of which were a long way from Sori Yanagi's Butterfly stool or Alvar Aalto's Stool 60. In the 18th century and earlier, seats with backs and armrests were largely reserved for high nobility.

The seating of today is more inclusive but the style and placement of chairs can still make a statement. Antique desk chairs and armchairs designed in the style of Louis XV, which eventually included painted furniture and were often made of rare woods, feature prominently curved legs as well as Chinese themes and varied ornaments. Much like the thrones of fairy tales and the regency, elegant lounges crafted in the Louis XV style convey wealth and prestige. In the kitchen, the dining chair placed at the head of the table is typically reserved for the head of the household or a revered guest.

Of course, with luxurious vintage or antique furnishings, every chair can seem like the best seat in the house. Whether your preference is stretching out on a plush sofa, such as the Serpentine, designed by Vladimir Kagan, or cozying up in a vintage wingback chair, there is likely to be a comfy classic or contemporary gem for you on 1stDibs.

With respect to the latest obsessions in design, cane seating has been cropping up everywhere, from sleek armchairs to lounge chairs, while bouclé fabric, a staple of modern furniture design, can be seen in mid-century modern, Scandinavian modern and Hollywood Regency furniture styles.

Admirers of the sophisticated craftsmanship and dark woods frequently associated with mid-century modern seating can find timeless furnishings in our expansive collection of lounge chairs, dining chairs and other items — whether they’re vintage editions or alluring official reproductions of iconic designs from the likes of Hans Wegner or from Charles and Ray Eames. Shop our inventory of Egg chairs, designed in 1958 by Arne Jacobsen, the Florence Knoll lounge chair and more.

No matter your style, the collection of unique chairs, sofas and other seating on 1stDibs is surely worthy of a standing ovation.

Questions About A Frame Chair

You can frame a tapestry using a tapestry frame, which works to keep the canvas taut and hang the item. There are many different types of tapestry frames, though a popular one has a top wooden clamp with a hanging mechanism and a bottom wooden clamp to weigh down the material.
  • 1stDibs ExpertSeptember 28, 2021

  • 1stDibs ExpertOctober 19, 2021
A tube frame is a structure designed to resist lateral loads by acting as a three-dimensional hollow tube. A truss-like, lightweight rigid structure made up of interconnected struts in a geometric design is known as a space frame or space structure.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 26, 2024
There is no single, most durable eyeglass frame. Materials help determine the overall strength of eyeglasses. Some materials prized for their durability include titanium, Flexon and nylon. Keep in mind that the quality of the hardware and the manufacturing techniques will also impact the lifespan of the eyeglasses. Shop a collection of eyeglasses on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertAugust 17, 2021
A plein air frame is a simple, unembellished wooden frame, usually gold-colored. These frames are typically used to mount plein air paintings, which are painted outdoors. Because of the constraints of painting in nature, the paintings and accompanying frames tend to be small.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
A Dutch ripple frame is a type of frame that has a distinctive, repetitive ripple across its surface. Dutch ripple frames were introduced in the 17th century. They found a resurgence in popularity in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, especially when incorporated with gold tones. Shop a range of Dutch ripple frames on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 2, 2021
The surface of a gilded picture frame has been treated with an application of gold or silver leaf (or an imitation, perhaps a treatment made from metal alloys). Gilding is a timeless decorative technique — centuries ago, members of the upper class preferred that many household objects be gilded. Shop a collection of antique, vintage, and contemporary gilded picture frames from some of the world’s top dealers on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
To frame needlepoint, you need to secure it to a mat and then place it under glass within a frame. Because old needlepoint is often fragile, consider visiting a frame shop to have a professional perform the work. Not only can this help to reduce the risk of damage, but it will also allow you to benefit from expert advice regarding what mat and frame will best complement the item. On 1stDibs, find a collection of vintage and antique needlepoint.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
To frame a full flag, you have many options. Often, people place them on a mat inside of a frame. For best results, take the flag to a frame shop. A professional can help you decide the best way to frame the flag and perform the work properly to avoid damaging the fabric. Shop a range of antique flags on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
Window frames are designed to surround the window and provide support for the entire window system. Some window frames are designed to be functional and move in different ways, while others are completely stationary. Find a collection of vintage and modern window frames on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
A gilded wood frame is a wooden frame with a gold or silver leaf detail. Gilded wood adds a vintage-style finish to frames and is a popular choice for home decor. Find a selection of gilded wood frames on 1stDibs.

  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
Yes, you can add a frame to a mirror. However, doing so requires skill and care to avoid damaging the glass. As a result, it is best to take the mirror to a furniture maker or carpenter to have a frame installed. On 1stDibs, shop a wide variety of wall mirrors.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
To determine if a frame is gilded, look at the finish and materials used to make it. A gilded frame will have a 22-karat gold leaf applied directly on the frame’s surface. Gold leaf does not tarnish and maintains its sheen or hue. When in doubt, work with a certified appraiser to determine the authenticity of your gilded frame. You’ll find a variety of expertly vetted antique gilded frames on 1stDibs.
