La Fonda Side Chair by Eames for Herman Miller
Located in Centreville, VA
This arm chair is one of two new fiberglass chairs Charles and Ray Eames designed in 1961, inspired by request from Alexander Girard, who needed seating for his new Manhattan restaurant, La Fonda Del Sol. Some collectors call these “La Fonda” chairs after the restaurant where they were first installed. Because Girard wanted chairs with seat backs no higher than dining table tops, Charles and Ray Eames designed the Eames La Fonda Arm Chair...

Eames Ctw Coffee Table in Beech for Herman Miller, circa 1950
Located in San Diego, CA
This 3rd Generation Eames CTW Coffee Table for Herman Miller was made in 1950. This table consists of a circular five-layer plywood top, sitting upon four matching legs of bent plywood to a near 90 degrees. CTW was the abbreviated name of the Coffee (C) Table (T) with a Wood (W) base and is an iconic Mid-Century Modern piece. We have restored but not refinished to keep the overall vintage look to the piece. This would be an amazing addition to any space and certainly a conversation starter. This piece has been refinished to perfection. Dimensions: 15.75”H x 34"W About the CTW: Released as part of the 1946 plywood group of furniture, CTW was the abbreviated name of the Coffee (C) Table (T) with a Wood (W) base. The Eames CTW Coffee Table consisted of a circular five-layer plywood top, sat upon four matching legs of bent ply to a near 90 degrees. The plywood group was the first to be released to the general market for adults by the Eames Office in 1946. The furniture was manufactured first by the Evans Molded Plywood Company and sold through distributor Herman Miller. Miller then bought and took over the range entirely from 1950. The group was the first of many from the Eames Office to consist of identical tops and different bases to create varying choices. This would famously be a theme for Eames design and seen to an even greater scale with the fiberglass range. The CTW had two matching all wood chairs in the group, the dining DCW and the lounge LCW as well as a sister rectangular table, the OTW. The Eames CTW Coffee Table and matching chairs were also replicated with metal legs and so named the CTM, DCM and LCM. The Eames CTW tables...

Charles and Ray Eames Red Beech DCM Chair, Herman Miller, Dining, Side Chair
Located in Brooklyn, NY
Charles and Ray Eames red beech DCM chair, Herman Miller, dining, side chair. Labeled. Designed in 1946. Produced in 2017. Authentic Eames chair for everywhere - a lovely complement to any dining room table or office, this chair’s curved plywood seat and back are designed to organically accommodate each sitter. They're connected to a light, streamlined steel frame with rubber shock mounts that flex to move with your body. The 1946 Eames DCM chair was the abbreviated name representing the dining height (D) side chair (C) on metal (M) rod base. The chair was part of a small series of chairs and tables which effectively kick started the career of Charles and Ray Eames into notoriety. History would soon coin the phrase ‘Eames Chairs’ largely based on the design and success of the first group of chairs including the DCM alongside the lounge version LCM as well as the wooden leg versions the DCW and LCW. The series were a result of a long-standing collaboration between Charles Eames and the Evans Plywood Company which had worked together, from the same location in Venice CA, throughout the war years. Eames molded plywood dining chair...

Franco Albini Bonacina Mid Century Margherita Chair & Coffee Table- 2 Pieces
Located in Basel, BS
The "Margherita chair" by Franco Albini is one of the most notable pieces of furniture created by the Lombard architect and designer Franco Albini in the 1950s. He partnered with Franca Helg for various projects in years. Albini’s inspiration in creating the chair is to suspend things and people in the air. Since it is a wooden, rattan and reed chair, a garden is the perfect setting for it. Just after a year of its creation, Margherita chair won first place at the 9th Milan Triennale. Moreover, MoMA in New York City, the Museum of Art in Philadelphia, and the Triennale Design Museum in Milan showcased this beautiful and stunning wooden chair. The name ‘Margherita’ is an Italian word meaning “daisy.” Moreover, the rattan and reed structure will give anyone who sits on it the confidence. It helps abandon every thought to the suspension of a dream or a break from reality. Franco Albini designed this wooden chair for Vittorio Bonacina. Albini’s furniture mostly features a traditional Italian craftsmanship practice with minimal concepts...

They are reupholstered with a bright orange fabric and their typical legs have been repainted in white. Shop Unique Furniture on 1stDibs

When it comes to shopping for vintage, new and antique furniture — whether you’re finally moving into that long-coveted loft apartment, ranch-style home, townhouse or furnishing your weekend house on the lake — you should think of your home as a stage for the seating, tables, lighting, storage cabinets and other pieces that best match your personality.

Coziness, comfort and creating a welcoming space are among the important things to consider when buying furniture, whether that means seeking strict cohesion or rooms characterized by a mix-and-match assembly of varying shapes, colors and materials. And for those who now work from home, exercise, eat and relax within the same four walls every day, they’ll also want to think about flexibility and an innovative approach.

Have you built your dream kitchen?

Is your current living-room furniture all that it could be?

Does your toast-worthy bar or vintage bar cart exude equal parts class and cheeriness?

And importantly, is your home officebackyard or otherwise — a happy one, regardless of the design style you happen to gravitate toward?

Although mid-century modern, rustic, minimalist, Art Deco and contemporary looks remain popular, they aren’t the only styles available to design connoisseurs.

Furniture styles are nothing if not fluid, meaning what’s popular one year may not be the next. That’s why it’s crucial to not only pay attention to interior-design trends but also focus on the styles that speak to you. That way, you (and your interior designer, if that is in the plans) can work to create a home that’s entirely your own, complete with impressively modern decor as well as an array of history’s universally renowned iconic designs.

It’s difficult to single out well-recognized designs from what is a crowded pantheon of celebrated and seminal furnishings. Certain outstanding designs have such stellar quality they’ve endured for decades as bona fide cultural treasures, still being manufactured, in many cases, by the same venerable companies that shepherded them into being (think Herman Miller, Knoll and Fritz Hansen). Some works come immediately to mind as contenders for any short list. When you’re discussing the most popular mid-century modern chairs, for example, no tally would be complete without citing designs by Arne Jacobsen, Charlotte Perriand, Charles and Ray Eames and Hans Wegner.

Good furniture, be it authentic vintage furniture or new & custom furniture, allows you to comfortably sit and tell your favorite stories. Great furniture tells a story of its own.

On 1stDibs, find everything from sofas to serveware to credenzas to coffee tables, and every other type of antique, vintage and new furniture you need to create a singular space that you’ll be proud to call home.
