Founded in 1910, Dunbar Furniture established a reputation for providing quality handcrafted products. The original Dunbar products were fine horse drawn buggies but with the invention of the automobile the company transformed into creating fine furnishings for the home. In 1931, Edward J. Wormley joined Dunbar as a young designer. Wormley's knowledge of furniture history and his global perspective became key in Dunbar's sucess over the next three decades. By the middle of the 20th century, Dunbar and Wormley had become true icons of American furniture design. The company participated in the 1950 Good Design exhibit with the Museum of Modern Art and dominated for the next three years. Ceramic top with pleasing modulations and contrasts between colors (Off-white, gray, amber and gold), textures (smooth, rough), linings (texture lines, designed lines and grout lines), geometric patterns (within and between tiles) and tile sizes. The very best in ceramic coffee tables Roger Capron had to offer.
Ceramic tiles are all made of lava, lighter in weight, supporting all these variations mentioned above.
Moreover, each tile was shaped and flattened by hand, which was a first for Mr Capron's work.
Mr Capron built up his company from 1 to 120 employees from 1946 to 1982. Here is a quick summary of his prolific production:

A rare piece indeed, hand-painted with a stylised horse in his inimitable style. The ceramic is in fair overall condition showing some fading and marks commensurate with age and usage. This is an exceptional piece for admirers of the works of master ceramicist, Roger Capron. Signed: 'Capron Vallauris'. About the Artist: The mid-century ceramic art of Roger Capron (1922-2006) embodied the vibrant spirit and verve of Vallauris and the French Côte d'Azur. He took over an abandoned pottery studio at the age of 24 in Vallauris, where he worked with Robert Picault and then Jean Derval. Capron’s ceramic workshop, known as "l'Atelier Callis", contributed to the renaissance of ceramics in Vallauris and at its peak employed over 120 ceramicists. He eventually expanded his production of vases, pitchers and other functional wares to include coffee tables with hand glazed tiles, lamp bases, wall plaques and other interior decor objects along with sculptural statues...
