Pietro Chiesa Mid-Century Italian Glass and Brass Chandelier by Fontana Arte 40s
Located in Puglia, Puglia
This Mid-Century glass and brass chandelier was designed by Pietro Chiesa for Fontana Arte in the 1940s. The Italian Art Deco designer Pietro Chiesa was born in Milan in 1892 in a family of artists originally from Ticino, Switzerland. After his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts of Brera, he completed an apprenticeship at the studio of the furniture designer Giovan Battista Giannotti; having gathered enough security and experience, Chiesa opened his studio in 1921 under the name Bottega di Pietro Chiesa. Known above all for his work as a glassmaker, Chiesa presented his work for the first time in 1925 at the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes in Paris. In 1932 his studio joined Fontana Arte, the legendary Italian manufacture of lighting and glass objects founded by Gio Ponti and Luigi Fontana. Chiesa becomes the company's artistic director, and over the years designs numerous models for Fontana Arte, including lamps, windows, tables, and artistic decorative objects. Among the most noteworthy pieces signed by the designer, we mention the Fontana table (1932), made in a single beam of molded clear glass, the Cartoccio vase (1932), and the Luminator lacquered brass floor lamp...

Pair of "Fontana piccola" lamps (1853) by Max Ingrand for Fontana Arte - Italy
Located in Padova, IT
Designed in 1954 by the French glassmaker and decorator Max Ingrand, this precious white satin blown glass lamp was initially called "1853" and later "Fontana" in homage to the manufacturer. Max Ingrand was in fact the Artistic Director of this company for over ten years. In the world of design "1853" is still today the distinctive name of the object. Object with an iconic and timeless design, Fontana has earned the title of "bedside lamp par excellence". It is equipped with multiple switching: both the base and the lampshade contain one or more light sources. Multiple lighting allows you to meet multiple lighting needs: from the slight liminity of the rest light, to the intense light for reading up to an emotional and soft light obtained by indirect emission. Max Ingrand, whose full name was Maurice Max-Ingrand (Bressuire, December 20, 1908 - Paris, August 25, 1969), was a French glassmaker, decorator and designer. He is known for having created the stained glass windows of numerous churches in France and abroad and for having been the artistic director of the Italian lamp company...

"Kanji" Blown Glass Wide Pendant Lamp Designed by Denis Guidone for FontanaArte
Located in Brooklyn, NY
"Kanji" is a wide pendant lamp, designed by Denis Guidone and manufactured by FontanaArte, made in blown glass with two finishes, transparent smoky gray and frosted white, and structure and handle in black painted metal. It cab be provided with a dimmer and lighting source is 10W LED (2700K, CRI>80, Lumen 1000). Dimensions: Ø 16.8", H. 15.3" (lamp) plus 98.4" "Kanji" is a collection of lighting elements that reinterprets traditional Oriental portable lanterns in a contemporary vision. Available in tabletop and ceiling models, it draws inspiration from Chinese porcelain dating from the Ming dynasty. The hand-blown glass diffuser, in frosted white and translucent smoky gray, is adorned with a pleated surface decoration. A LED ring runs inside the structure and magically illuminates the diffuser. Evocative of Far East not only as form but also as a name, as "Kanji" are characters of Chinese origin used in Japanese writing in conjunction with the Hiragana and Katakana syllabaries, "Kanji" is designed to be used alone or in pairs, with each form amplifying the aesthetic power of the other. Denis Guidone studied architecture at the Politecnico di Milano and at FAUP in Oporto. He won numerous international awards, including the IDA Design Award in Los Angeles. He was also given the Bruno Munari Prize by Gillo Dorfles...

Shop Unique Furniture on 1stDibs

When it comes to shopping for vintage, new and antique furniture — whether you’re finally moving into that long-coveted loft apartment, ranch-style home, townhouse or furnishing your weekend house on the lake — you should think of your home as a stage for the seating, tables, lighting, storage cabinets and other pieces that best match your personality.

Coziness, comfort and creating a welcoming space are among the important things to consider when buying furniture, whether that means seeking strict cohesion or rooms characterized by a mix-and-match assembly of varying shapes, colors and materials. And for those who now work from home, exercise, eat and relax within the same four walls every day, they’ll also want to think about flexibility and an innovative approach.

Have you built your dream kitchen?

Is your current living-room furniture all that it could be?

Does your toast-worthy bar or vintage bar cart exude equal parts class and cheeriness?

And importantly, is your home officebackyard or otherwise — a happy one, regardless of the design style you happen to gravitate toward?

Although mid-century modern, rustic, minimalist, Art Deco and contemporary looks remain popular, they aren’t the only styles available to design connoisseurs.

Furniture styles are nothing if not fluid, meaning what’s popular one year may not be the next. That’s why it’s crucial to not only pay attention to interior-design trends but also focus on the styles that speak to you. That way, you (and your interior designer, if that is in the plans) can work to create a home that’s entirely your own, complete with impressively modern decor as well as an array of history’s universally renowned iconic designs.

It’s difficult to single out well-recognized designs from what is a crowded pantheon of celebrated and seminal furnishings. Certain outstanding designs have such stellar quality they’ve endured for decades as bona fide cultural treasures, still being manufactured, in many cases, by the same venerable companies that shepherded them into being (think Herman Miller, Knoll and Fritz Hansen). Some works come immediately to mind as contenders for any short list. When you’re discussing the most popular mid-century modern chairs, for example, no tally would be complete without citing designs by Arne Jacobsen, Charlotte Perriand, Charles and Ray Eames and Hans Wegner.

Good furniture, be it authentic vintage furniture or new & custom furniture, allows you to comfortably sit and tell your favorite stories. Great furniture tells a story of its own.

On 1stDibs, find everything from sofas to serveware to credenzas to coffee tables, and every other type of antique, vintage and new furniture you need to create a singular space that you’ll be proud to call home.
