Regency Style Hanging Lamp Made of Murano Glass by Kalmar, 1960 Austria
Located in Oostrum-Venray, NL
Regency style hanging lamp made of Murano glass by Kalmar, 1960 Austria A beautiful hanging lamp from Kalmar by Franken KG. This is a beautiful model hanging lamp. The special shapes in the design give these lamps a completely individual and unique look. This lamp was made in the 1960s from thick Murano glass in a beautiful golden brass frame. This gives the light of the lamp a nice warm glow. The lamp is still in good vintage condition. The Austrian designer-entrepreneur Julius Theodor (J.T.) Kalmar was born in Vienna in 1884. Kalmar gained a wealth of design expertise in his formative years. Kalmar attended the Birmingham School of Art as well as the University of Applied Arts in Vienna under the direction of Viennese Secession architect Josef Hoffmann (1870-1956). Kalmar joined his father's company in 1906 and eventually took over in 1913. A strong supporter of the Arts & Crafts movement, Kalmar led the company away from the eclecticism of the late 19th century. Kalmar's design aesthetic was characterized by an integration of form and function and a blend of classic tradition with forward-thinking innovation. In the mid-1920s, his designs dominated the influential, avant-garde home furnishing store Haus & Garten, founded by leading architects Josef Frank (1885-1967) and Oskar Wlach (1881-1963). In the 1930s, Kalmar began collaborating with the Austrian Werkbund, an association founded by architects, artists, craftsmen and manufacturers committed to modernist design principles. Kalmar created a series of glass chandeliers and fixtures for the Werkbund, which exuded meticulous construction and craftsmanship. Using traditional materials such as glass, bronze and brass, these designs eschewed ornaments, favoring a purist aesthetic instead. Throughout his career, Kalmar designed lighting fixtures for many renowned architects, including Josef Frank and Oskar Wlach, Oskar Strnad, Clemens Holzmeister, Oswald Haerdtl, Carl Appel, Erich Boltenstern and Ernst Plischke, as well as important institutions, such as the Vienna Opera...

Kalmar J.T. Austrian Designer Pair of Ice Glass Wall Sconces
Located in Prato, Tuscany
We kindly suggest you read the whole description, because with it we try to give you detailed technical and historical information to guarantee the authenticity of our objects. Iconic pair of wall sconces designed in "Brutalist" style by Julius Theodore Kalmar and produced by Kalmar for the Soria collection between 1960 and 1964, for this series the company preferred to use Murano glass; each sconce consists of a nickel-plated metal frame in the shape of an open box, in the front, there are lamp holders for two light points and an attachment on which the glass structure is easily hooked and can be removed for cleaning, while the one that rests on the wall contains the electrical wires; These spectacular sconces are characterized by the icicle-like glass components (ice glass) that look incredibly similar to a real ice sculpture; when lit and flooded with light, they cast beautiful shadows on the surrounding walls, creating a cozy warmth in the room despite their icy appearance, they play with natural (sun) light even when turned off. Founded by Julius August Kalmar in 1881 in Vienna, Kalmar originally produced handcrafted objects with cast bronze. Over the years, they partnered with acclaimed architects and designers, eventually presenting their custom-made wares at major exhibitions such as the 1888 Vienna Trade Exposition, 1893 Chicago World's Columbian Exposition, the 1901 Export Exposition Scandinavia, and the 1906 Austrian Exhibition in London. Entering the 20th century, Kalmar began crafting customized fixtures with top-tier architects and designers for some of the largest luxury projects in the world, a path they continue on today. Notable projects include Makkah Clock Royal Tower, W Doha Hotel, Waldorf Astoria Shanghai on the Bund, The Langham...

Shop Unique Furniture on 1stDibs

When it comes to shopping for vintage, new and antique furniture — whether you’re finally moving into that long-coveted loft apartment, ranch-style home, townhouse or furnishing your weekend house on the lake — you should think of your home as a stage for the seating, tables, lighting, storage cabinets and other pieces that best match your personality.

Coziness, comfort and creating a welcoming space are among the important things to consider when buying furniture, whether that means seeking strict cohesion or rooms characterized by a mix-and-match assembly of varying shapes, colors and materials. And for those who now work from home, exercise, eat and relax within the same four walls every day, they’ll also want to think about flexibility and an innovative approach.

Have you built your dream kitchen?

Is your current living-room furniture all that it could be?

Does your toast-worthy bar or vintage bar cart exude equal parts class and cheeriness?

And importantly, is your home officebackyard or otherwise — a happy one, regardless of the design style you happen to gravitate toward?

Although mid-century modern, rustic, minimalist, Art Deco and contemporary looks remain popular, they aren’t the only styles available to design connoisseurs.

Furniture styles are nothing if not fluid, meaning what’s popular one year may not be the next. That’s why it’s crucial to not only pay attention to interior-design trends but also focus on the styles that speak to you. That way, you (and your interior designer, if that is in the plans) can work to create a home that’s entirely your own, complete with impressively modern decor as well as an array of history’s universally renowned iconic designs.

It’s difficult to single out well-recognized designs from what is a crowded pantheon of celebrated and seminal furnishings. Certain outstanding designs have such stellar quality they’ve endured for decades as bona fide cultural treasures, still being manufactured, in many cases, by the same venerable companies that shepherded them into being (think Herman Miller, Knoll and Fritz Hansen). Some works come immediately to mind as contenders for any short list. When you’re discussing the most popular mid-century modern chairs, for example, no tally would be complete without citing designs by Arne Jacobsen, Charlotte Perriand, Charles and Ray Eames and Hans Wegner.

Good furniture, be it authentic vintage furniture or new & custom furniture, allows you to comfortably sit and tell your favorite stories. Great furniture tells a story of its own.

On 1stDibs, find everything from sofas to serveware to credenzas to coffee tables, and every other type of antique, vintage and new furniture you need to create a singular space that you’ll be proud to call home.
