Art Nouveau Bronze Sculpture of "Heroine" by théophile François Somme

“Heroine” by Theophile Francois Somme is a dramatic and richly detailed Art Nouveau sculpture in bronze and chryselephantine created, circa 1920. This exceptional piece has finely carved facial features and wonderful use of patinated bronze to create the sweep of fabric. The statue sits on a carved marble base.
Somme was born in Nancy in 1871, lived until 1952 and was a frequent participant in the Parisian Salon des Artistes. He won the Gold Medal at the salon in 1924, a silver medal in 1925 and in 1937 he was awarded the Gold Medal at the Paris Exposition Internationale.

VALERIE “VALLY” WIESELTHIER (Austrian-American, 1895 – 1945) was an outstanding ceramic artist. She was born to a Jewish family in Vienna, Austria. Her father, Wilhelm Wieselthier was a lawyer. Valluy attended theWiener Frauenacademie in Vienna from 1912 to 1914 and studied at the Vienna School of Applied Arts with Rosalinda Rothhansl, Kolo Moser, Jodef Hoffmann and Michael Powolny from 1914 to 1920. In addition, she worked as an auxiliary nurse during the First World War.
From 1917 to 1922, she worked for the Wiener Werkstatte. From 1922 to 1927, she ran her own ceramic workshop in cooperation with the Augarten porcelain factory, which was newly founded in 1923, but also with other companies such as Friedrich Goldschider, Gmundner Keramik and Lobmeyr.
Her expressive and humorous porcelain figures attracted attention at the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et industriels modern in Paris in 1925 and are considered typical examples of the Art Deco style style. From 1928, the artist increasingly moved her center of life to the United States. She went to the International Exhibition of Ceramic Art in New York City in October 1928. Portrayal of the dancer Lucie Kieselhausen in an exotic costume consisting of a jacket and knee-length skirt with star decoration in brown, blue and yellow, sleeves and skirt part with tiered flounces with a wavy hem, the waisted jacket on the side and on the back with three peaks similar to a bellflower, jagged headgear with long colored feathers curved upwards, floral decorative element on the side of the posing figure at her feet.
The figure is based on a black, round base with the artist's signature 'Kostial' on the top next to the figure.
The dancer and actress Lucy Kieselhausen (1897 - 1926) was a student of Grete Wiesenthal and was a successful German dancer at the beginning of the 20th century. Lucy Kieselhausen appeared in three silent films: 'Thousand and one Woman' (18), 'The Seventh Great Power' and 'Earth Spirit'. In addition to her dancing activities, Lucy Kieselhausen also wrote the dance drama 'Salambo', which was set to music by Heinz Tiessen. In 1926, Lucy Kieselhausen died in a tragic accident caused by a petrol explosion with a burning jet of flame in her bathroom. Source: Cyranos ch

A harlequin lost in thought is depicted in a costume elaborately decorated with a fine floral pattern in shades of blue and yellow. His cap, the ruff and the strap shoes are kept in dark brown. Under his left arm he holds a gray umbrella to which an electrified metal lantern is attached.
