New Architectural Pleasures, French Book by George Pompidou Art Center, 1985
By Centre Georges Pompidou
Located in Atlanta, GA
Nouveaux Plaisirs d'Architectures (New Architectural Pleasures), French book published by The National Center of Art and Culture Georges Pompidou in Paris, 1985. Les pluralismes de la Creation en Europe et aux Etats-Unis depuis 1968 vus a travers les collections du Deutsches Architekturmuseum de Francfort. (The Pluralisms of Creation in Europe and the United States since 1968 seen through the collections of the Deutsches Architekturmuseum in Frankfurt.) This first edition of the book was published on the occasion of the exhibition of the same name, co-produced with the Center de Création Industrielle and the Deutsches Architekturmuseum, presented from February 21 to April 22, 1985. This book takes up the outline of this exhibition, which presents a panorama of various architectural trends from 1968 to 1985 in Europe and the United States through the collections of the German Museum of Architecture in Frankfurt, inaugurated in 1984. It is also an extension of the Images et Imaginaires d'Architecture event presented at the Center Pompidou by the CCI in 1984. A set of two hundred original drawings, thirty-five models, and a few paintings and sculptures testify to a new plurality of research and the current proliferation of architectural creation. This panorama reflects through some forty projects (nearly half of which were finished), many recent currents, and not just postmodernism. The reader discovers, for example, representatives, side by side: - the rationalist movement, such as Giorgio Grassi...

1925 The Memory Years, French Book by Editions Larousse, 1988
By Modern History
Located in Atlanta, GA
1925, Les Années-Mémoire (1925, The Memory Years), French book by Editions Larousse, 1988. Relive the year 1925 as if you were there. This volume will make you relive, with emotion, the facts and events of the interwar period. Because that year, in France, we hear everywhere humming, "When We Are Two, It's Not The Same Thing" by Maurice Chevalier. Street music and music hall contribute to a good mood. And yet, the economic situation is hardly smiling, and the French government knows many setbacks: in April, Edouard Herriot yields his place as president of the Council to Paul Painlevé, and in October, Aristide Briand, in his turn, replaces it. Inflation in Germany is still rife, and the mark value is almost zero. 1925 is also rich in artistic and sporting events. American crews completed the first circumnavigation of the globe by plane in 175 days. French actor Michel Simon is first seen in Marcel L'Herbier's film "Feu Mathias Pascal." Classical music is not to be outdone, Maurice Ravel composes Tzigane, and Honegger triumphs with his King David. A new phenomenon, sport fascinates more and more French people and attracts many followers. Our tennis players excel at Wimbledon while the All Blacks come to give us a rugby lesson. In Monaco, we happily celebrate Louis II...

1931 The Waves
Located in Bath, GB
A nice first edition copy of this experimental novel by Virginia Woolf, one of her most puzzling publications, here in the original beautifully designed dust wrapper by Vanessa Bell. The first edition, first impression of this work. In the original Vanessa Bell designed unclipped dust wrapper. One of the experimental novels of Virginia Woolf, following six narrators from childhood to adulthood through a series of soliloquies, ruminating on the concepts of individuality, self, and community. Readers can see some of Woolf's friends in her characters in this novel; in particular E. M. Forster in the writer Bernard, T. S. Eliot in the outsider Louis, Lytton Strachey in Neville, Mary Hutchinson in the socialite Jinny, Vanessa Bell, in the fleeing Susan, and Thoby Stephen in the flawed and never narrator Percival. Written by the Bloomsbury author Virginia Woolf, a central figure of the literary group, herself known for her experimental writings and affair with fellow author Vita Sackville-West. Published by the Hogarth Press...

A racing flag from the Royal Sailing Yacht Britannia, circa 1936
Located in Lymington, Hampshire
A racing flag from the Royal Sailing Yacht Britannia, circa 1936. This large racing flag was made from pieced wool bunting with machine stitched bunting and a canvas sleeve stamped ‘5’. It is of rectangular form with the Prince of Wales feathers enclosed in a ducal coronet and the motto ‘Ich Dien’ on a halved blue and red ground, later framed and glazed. It is accompanied by a black edged letter on Buckingham Palace writing paper dated 10th July 1936 saying ‘Dear Sir, I am commanded by the King and Queen Mary to send you these flags which were flown on board “Britannia” at various times during her career, including one of her racing flags. Their Majesties hope you will like to keep these in your club house as souvenirs of the old yacht. Yours Derek Keppell, Master of the Household, The Commodore, Royal Portsmouth Corinthian Yacht Club.” King George died on 20 January 1936 which explains the black edge to the letter. English, circa 1936. Height: 43in (109cm) Width:60in (152.5cm) Framed height: 57½ in (146 cm) Width: 81½ in (207cm) Provenance: Royal Naval Club & Royal Albert Yacht Club, Portsmouth R.S.Y. Britannia played an important part in preparing challengers for the America’s Cup. She was used as a trial horse for the Shamrocks and later, after conversion, for most of the ‘J’ Class yachts of the 1930s. Britannia was built in 1893 according to the plans of G. L. Watson for His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales, a keen and able helmsman. From the beginning, Britannia was a successful racing yacht winning races against Kaiser Wilhelm’s Meteors, among many others. Britannia won over two hundred races in her career — a record that has yet to be surpassed. She was beaten once by Navahoe, one of Herreshoff’s boats, but fared better against another America’s Cup yacht, Vigilant, winning twelve races out of seventeen. When Britannia was converted to race in the ‘J’ Class she was stripped of her bulwarks, given a one-piece mast and a Bermudan mainsail. The transition did not interrupt her run of success, although she performed best in hard weather. She was scuttled off the Isle of Wight at the dying request of George V. Vintage Free Wheeling Green Lithographed All Tin Racing Car. French, Circa 1930
Located in Incline Village, NV
Circa 1930's free wheeling green lithographed all tin racing car, with attached pressed steel driver; it is probably of French manufacturer (the only time I have seen for sale was from a French toy dealer). This scarce toy has markings resembling early racing cars with the streamlined style graphics in yellow and green; standard grill; exhaust four manifolds to each side, and a spare tire attached to the rear; looks like an early Le Mans type car with the spare (see images). Other markings include the number "3:" on each side; "510 x 1" on the rear tire"; and probably the makers mark and logo, which I can't identify, on the top right behind the driver (see images). Not being a wind-up or a friction toy, this racing car was pushed across the floor by hand or/and used as an accessory in a toy train layout...

Included with this painting is a copy of the original magazine, which has been placed in a protective sleeve, and fixed to the reverse of the frame In 1980 when Kirk Henderson was commissioned to design the cover of Cinefantastique magazine. Hitchcock's The Birds was already a legendary horror film. Henderson not only included Tippi Hedren and the menacing birds in his artwork, he also included a tonal blue portrait of the master of suspense, Alfred Hitchcock. Antique and Vintage Collectibles and Curiosities for Sale

Antique and vintage collectibles and curiosities can bring whimsy and wonder to any interior.

Decorating with old scientific instruments, historical memorabilia and vintage musical instruments, as well as other authentic collectibles and curiosities that can be found on 1stDibs, presents an opportunity to create a unique, natural history museum-like atmosphere in your home that can provoke conversation as often as it pays tribute to how far we’ve come in understanding our world.

And bringing collectibles and curiosities into your space is actually on trend — Wunderkammern, or curiosity cabinets, were all the rage in Europe during the 1500s and continued to have adherents there and in the U.S. in the following centuries. Today, however, they’re experiencing a real surge in popularity and influencing how many interior designers are furnishing and decorating homes — combining contemporary with antique, scientific with tribal, earthly with extraterrestrial, Les Lalanne tables with Flemish tapestries.

The original Wunderkammern were entire rooms filled with objects demonstrating their owners’ worldly knowledge: A proper one included artificiala or preciosa (objets d’art); naturalia (such as skeletons, shells, minerals); exotica (taxidermy or dried plants); and scientifica (scientific instruments), frequently alongside religious relics and ancient artifacts.

Pay tribute to a history of rich and diverse musical traditions that have taken shape all over the world by decorating your home with a collection of antique and vintage musical instruments — with a little help from strong hanging wire or some wall hooks, vintage brass instruments such as a gong, French horn or trumpet can help elevate a home office or complement the efforts you’ve made to ensure a welcoming vibe in your home’s entryway. Bells or antique wind instruments can add provocative metallic contrasts to dark woods as tabletop decorative objects.

Create an intriguing focal point with Georgian scientific instruments, such as stick barometers with mahogany cases or lacquered brass telescopes. These items stem from an era named for the monarchies of the four King Georges, who ruled England in succession starting in 1714 (plus King William’s reign, which lasted until 1837). Just as there was beautiful jewelry produced during the period that today is coveted by collectors, there is much to be found in the collectibles and curiosities realm too.

Wanderlust, nostalgia and a shared love of good design are contributing factors to certain trends in decorating — just as vintage trunks and luggage have reappeared as furniture or home accents in a bedroom or foyer, decorating with globes, maps or nautical objects is similarly rooted in the allure of travel and a penchant for the stylish finishing touch that collectibles bring to our homes.
