Designed and crafted by French Pop Artist, Luois Durot, this piece is sure going to be a conversation piece. Is it a tongue? Is it a bum? It's called the Pouffesses chair and it's definitely a fun piece that makes a bold statement in any room! Louis Durot's pieces have sharply increased in popularity in recent years-- being currently styled by top interior designers. A quick search online will yield a treasure trove of these pieces being used in a number of absolutely stunning contemporary environments. Louis Durot, born 1939, is a French pop artist who narrowly escaped deportation in 1943 by missing the train to Auschwitz. Gathered in Magagnosque ( Alpes-Maritimes ), it is there that he discovered the pleasure of sculpting the earth and making objects from it. In 1960, he enrolled at the Faculty of Science, where he obtained a diploma in “propaedeutics – Maths 1 Mécagène”. In 1963, he became a "gluer" for two months and then an engineer at Equipiel, where he was responsible for calculations and resistance measurements to develop prototypes of nuclear power plants. When the French branch was abandoned and became a research company, Equipiel offered him a one-year training in organic chemistry. Between 1966 and 1972, Louis Durot was at the head of a dozen research contracts. In 1964, Louis Durot founded the Freelane Studio which aims to bring together artists from various disciplines with common artistic expectations. The Freelane Studio thus brought together the jazz journalist Gilles Brinon, the painter Jean Ihallero, Maxime Defert... It was thanks to them that Louis Durot met the painter François Arnal , who introduced him to the French sculptor César in 1966. Louis Durot becomes César's assistant for a year, in order to put his qualities as a chemical engineer at his service. In César's studio, he improves his knowledge of polyurethane foam and the artist's foam creations, his expansions. Three hundred years of history, rich wood, simple beauty, and rare transitional form! This is a near pair of early French chairs. They are dated circa 1690; imagine more than 300 years of history! They are made of two prized hardwoods--walnut and oak. The chairs are a rich, dark chocolate color with a wonderful patina. The chairs are similar in size, color, and construction, but they are not perfectly matched pairs. The chairs have a simple, utilitarian beauty. Their open backrests have small curves decorating the top rail. The front legs and front crossbars have easy turnings. The legs are reinforced with classic H-stretchers. There are simple cylindrical feet in front and block feet in back. They are of the period and representative of an early, rustic, provincial Louis XIV style. Each chair includes a custom hand-tied cushion made from a Scalamandre textile. The design features deep foliage in faded greens, yellows, and browns, with a few red speckles. The fabric is contemporary yet finished to look wonderfully old, faded, and worn. The chair's historical interest will inspire the collector in you. Early on, most people sat on stools. During the 1600s, chairs--an innovation at the time--became popular. Early chairs were often backstools--more stools with backrests than our modern seats. This pair captures this unique moment of the evolution from stool to chair. The chairs are smaller in size. Their backs are about 32 and 1/2 inches tall, and their seats are about 15 and 1/2 inches high. They are bigger than a child's chair but smaller than a dining chair. The size is part of the historical context. For sure, people were smaller back in the 17th century—maybe 6 inches shorter or more on average. Most importantly, the small size meant these rare, highly valued items could be easily carried where needed—to a guest relaxing, a servant doing light chores, or a devotee praying. (Before we purchased these chairs, they had been in a family chapel at a manor house in the South of France for 100+ years.) Today, you might use these chairs to provide a striking contrast with the rest of your home. The smaller size means they might accessorize your living room, study, hallway, or nook. As the chairs come as a pair, you might sit on them around a fireplace, use them to bookend a side table, or corner them around a coffee table. A fine, large, late 17th century, Flemish, open armchair in the style of Daniel Marot with an upholstered seat This fine, armchair is an, unusually, large size and the carving is of exceptional quality reflecting the status of the owner it was made for. It is sturdy and in usable condition. Chairs of this type, with tall, intricately carved backs, were placed in rows against a wall forming part of the decoration of a room. The carving of the back of this chair is French in style and was based on decorative prints by Daniël Marot The cresting carved with a profusion of acanthus leaf scrolls. The back with fine, pierced carving. The mid-section with a central flowerhead with scrolled shields above and below ornamented with flowerheads acanthus leaf crestings. Two pairs of carved ‘S’ scrolls ornamented with acanthus leaves either side. The tapering turned sections surmounted by ionic capitals and supporting back of the scroll arms carved with acanthus leaf ornament. The front arms supported by baluster and tapering turned sections ornamented with acanthus leaf carving. The legs joined by a shaped ‘H’ stretcher with central finial, on bun feet. The upholstered seat reupholstered in a bargello woven in tones of blue, green, red and gold faced with braid and brass studwork. The back of the chair has an incredible, 19th century, oak support from the cresting to halfway down the back, which has been beautifully carved to conform with the open sections of the back, and two braces down the length of the back. There are also two oak supports behind seat blocks at the top of the legs. These repairs are sensitive to the model of chair and have become part of its character and features in their own right and they are very interesting from a conservation history perspective. There are two old repairs to a small break in the cresting on the right hand side and the hairline cracks are visible, an old repair to a small break in the top right of the central splat with a small piece added and a visible hairline crack. The right side of the back has noticeable worm damage on the right seat block which is probably the root cause of the break on the block on this side from impact as the chair probably fell backwards at some point and either onto its right side or it hit something on that side and the block weakened by worm gave way as the damage to the chair is localised on the far right side. Because the backs are high on these Daniel Marot chairs they are top heavy and invariably do have damage to the backs and crestings from impact damage so this is not unusual. The right block has been repaired thoroughly and is stable and there is no live worm in the chair. It would be possible to disguise these repairs but I have left them as they are consistent with the 19th century date of the supports and conform with museum standards. A full set of photographs...
