Gorgeous Mid-Century Modern étagère comprised of a bow shape chrome frame and 5 bowed smoked glass shelves. Done in the style of James David or Design Institute of America aka DIA. Beautiful condition, keeping in mind that this is vintage and not new so will have signs of use. There is a small chip on the backside of one shelf and the chrome has no outstanding flaws that we have detected. Please see photos, Circa 1960-1970’s.
WOW!!! Just look at this GORGEOUS chrome and smoked glass 5 shelf étagère!! Designed in the manner of James David or DIA, this wonderful Mid-Century Modern étagère has a distinct appearance… starting with four tall, vertical square chrome tubes that are placed in a manner that creates a tall slender “square” in the center of the étagère. That “square” is attached to a large chrome rectangle which goes against the wall, and five curved smoked glass shelves slide through the center square and attach to the rectangle and pull this beauty together. Mid-century modern credenzas, which, long and low, evolved from tables that were built as early as the 14th century in Italy, typically have no legs or very short legs and have grown in popularity as an alluring storage option over time.
Although the name immediately invokes images of clothing, dressers were initially created in Europe for a much different purpose. This furnishing was initially a flat-surfaced, low-profile side table equipped with a few drawers — a common fixture used to dress and prepare meats in English kitchens throughout the Tudor period. The drawers served as perfect utensil storage. It wasn’t until the design made its way to North America that it became enlarged and equipped with enough space to hold clothing and cosmetics. The very history of storage case pieces is a testament to their versatility and well-earned place in any room.
