Magnificent Antique Japanese Woven Brocade Kesa Monk's Robe Meiji Period
Located in Atlanta, GA
A stunning Japanese Kesa (Monk's Vestment) made from thirteen columns of patchworks of shimmering woven brocades with luxuriant golden threads. Dated to late 19th century of Meiji Period, the elaborate woven motifs on this kesa feature repetitive roundels dragon and phoenix intermixed with peonies and chrysanthemum blossoms. Two shades of contrasting gold threads were used on a striking purplish-blue background, with a dark metallic thread for the outer border and a brighter thread for the main body. The brilliantly woven fabric was possibly recycled from Noh costumes...

Junichiro Sekino Signed Limited Edition Japanese Print Yosaku Feeling Ill, 1948
By Junichiro Sekino
Located in Studio City, CA
A truly wonderful and exceedingly rare early limited edition woodblock print by famed Japanese artist/printmaker Junichiro Sekino. This print, titled "Yosaku Feeling Ill", is one of Sekino's earliest known works. A very dramatic image done in black and white, this work features the artist himself in a self-portraiture as he comforts his young son (who evidently does not feel well) in an almost playful and knowing manner. The print is double signed - once in white ink within the image and also hand pencil signed and numbered (9/30) by Sekino in the lower margin. The image features a focused and rather direct composition emphasized by the use of just the two colors. It is an exquisite and very rare/hard-to-find work. Quite engaging. A must for collectors of Sekino's work. Junichiro Sekino was largely considered, along with Kiyoshi Saito, to be one of Japan's paramount 20th-century master print artists. Both were prominent leaders of the Sosaku Hanga movement. Sekino's works can be found in many museums including: The Museum of Modern Art, N. Y., the Art Institute Chicago, the Museum of Fine Art, Boston, the British Museum, and the Portland Art Museum among many other Fine museums throughout the world. Would be a fantastic addition to any modern Japanese print...

'Oni' Big Color Lithograph 12/50 by Kumi Sugaï 1985
By Kumi Sugai
Located in Weesp, NL
Kumi Sugaï, one of the most internationally acclaimed Japanese painters of the twentieth century. Rare 1985 color lithograph by Kumi Sugaï. This limited edition, 12/50, in excellent condition is titled 'Oni'. Oni can be read "Nami" which means wave but also Blue Devil. Oni translates in Japanese folklore as a type of demonic creature often of giant size, great strength, and fearful appearance. They are generally considered to be foreign in origin. Cruel and malicious, they can, nevertheless, be converted to Buddhism. Kumi Sugaï (1919–1996): A Brief Biography Kumi Sugaï was a Japanese-French artist known for his innovative approach to abstract art, blending elements of traditional Japanese calligraphy with modern abstraction. He was born on January 3, 1919, in Kobe, Japan, and began his artistic career in the 1930s. In the 1950s, Sugaï moved to France, where he became associated with the art movement known as "Abstraction Lyrique...

Framed Antique Japanese Embroidery Fukusa Panel Takasago Legend
Located in Atlanta, GA
A finely embroidered Japanese silk Fukusa panel presented in a beautiful silk-lined giltwood frame (newly framed and glazed), circa late 19th century of Meiji Period. Fukusa is a traditional Japanese textile art used to wrap and present gifts at important occasions. Depending on the occasion, the panel itself can be a very fine textile art on its own. On the deep blue background, this elaborate textile art depicts an old couple standing on a bridge with three bystanders, flanked by pine trees with hills afar. The couple is Jotomba (Joo and Uba are their respective names), characters in the Legend of Takasago, one of the oldest Japanese mythologies, who are associated with old pines. The legend goes as: "At Takasago Shrine there is a very old pine tree, the trunk of which is bifurcated; in it dwells the spirit of the Maiden of Takasago who was seen once by the son of Izanagi who fell in love and wedded her. Both lived to a very great age, dying at the same hour on the same day, and since then their spirits abide in the tree, but on moonlight nights they return to human shape to revisit the scene of their earthly felicity and pursue their work of gathering pine needles. His pine tree is called “The Pine of Suminoe” while hers is "Takasago pine". In Japan, Takasago couple...

Tokyo Monogatari / Tokyo Story
Located in London, GB
Original Japanese film poster for the 1953 drama directed by Yasujiro Ozy. The film starred Chishu Ryu and Chieko Higashiyama. One of Japan’s most celebrated and prolific directors, Yasujiro Ozu directed fifty-four films over the course of his life. Ozu cultivated an unmistakable aesthetic with the help of several long-term collaborators, including the scriptwriter Kogo Nada. Director and writer shared a vision, and are said to have developed ideas for their films together over glasses of sake, in the dead of night. The resulting films are as intimate as the process of conceiving them. Ozu was primarily interested in the shomin-geki tradition of storytelling, in which the focus lies on the lives of ordinary people and families. Many critics consider Tokyo Story...
