This exceptional, limited edition woodblock print of a once well-known Sumo wrestler is pencil signed, sealed in red, titled (Kitanoumi in Dohyo-iri), dated (1978) and numbered (62/128) by Japanese master printmaker Junichiro Sekino. A rare and relatively hard-to-find print. Junichiro Sekino was largely considered, along with Kiyoshi Saito, to be one of Japan's paramount 20th-century master print artists. Both were prominent leaders of the Sosaku Hanga movement. Sekino's works can be found in many museums including: The Museum of Modern Art, N. A masterful landscape made entirely of carefully arranged mulberry paper fibers in a Japanese art practice called Obara. Accented with gold leaf. Incredible craftsmanship and a wonderful rendering of bare trees. Made by Yamauchi Issei (b. 1929), stamped in the corner. Issei is well known throughout Japan as the leading artist in Obara Paper Art. Kumi Sugaï, one of the most internationally acclaimed Japanese painters of the twentieth century. Colors may slightly vary due to photographic lighting sources or your monitor settings. KUMI SUGAÏ, JAPAN (1919 - 1996) Kumi Sugaï was a painter, sculptor and print maker born in 1919 in Kobe, Japan. Sugaï first experimented with oil painting at age nine and became a student at the Osaka School of Fine Arts in 1933 when he was fourteen. He met with the Gutai Art Association founder, Jiro Yoshihara which had a huge impact on his further artistic development and experimentalism. He was part of the first generation of 20th-century Japanese artists to become acquainted with Western painting techniques (under the instructions of Yoshihara), but he also explored both typography and Japanese calligraphy, important in his subsequent work. Sugaï left art school prematurely to work in commercial advertising for Hankyu electric rail company from 1937 to 1945. These formative years of practicing Western and traditional Japanese mediums gave a dual foundation to his future work. He dedicated himself to painting and moved to Paris in 1952, enrolling at the Académie de la grand chaumière, being one of the first generation of the post-war Japanese artists to join the international avant-garde art scene. Sugai was immediately noticed in Paris for his delicate touch and use of abstract gestures resembling primitive forms. He had his first solo show at Galerie Craven in 1954. In 1955 he made his first work in edition (Diable Rouge, a lithograph) and decided that from now on print work (lithographs, etchings and later silkscreens) was going to be an important part of his oeuvre. One of the reasons was to make his work more accessible. Between 1955 and 1996 Sugaï produced a little under 400 works in edition. Considered part of the École de Paris (School of Paris) and the Nouveau Réalisme (New Realism) movements, in 1962 he began to move from calligraphic, mainly monochromatic, organic motifs to more hard-edge geometric forms painted with clear colors. This aesthetic was more often than not influenced by speeding the curves of the freeways surrounding Paris in his beloved Porsche. He was possessed with speed and in a lot of his work we find abstracted roads (The S shape) details of roadsigns, parkings and in general an abstract visual language inspired by what he would see through his window moving at great speed. City and rural Landscapes transformed into simple colored compositions. Sugaï found great joy in the act of repetition and some iconic shapes have been appearing in his work throughout his whole career, first loosely and soft in his early etchings, paintings and lithographs, later hard edged and straight in his silkscreens. Sugai died in Kobe in 1996. His artworks were shown in numerous exhibitions around the world and most of his paintings are in the collections of well-known museums (Such as MOMA, the Guggenheim and Centre Pompidou) and important collectors. A striking Japanese embroidery tapestry circa 1890s Meiji period presented in a gilt wood frame under glaze. The design features four dragons coiling and slithering in the clouds. The most auspicious mythological creature, dragon was a very popular motif in Japanese textile art. Viewing this particular piece, one is struck by the superb craftsmanship with the profuse use of silver threads in satin stitches and complex chain stich coiling that create the background. The slight relief technique was also used on parts of the dragon heads, rendering the piece a strong sense of dimension and motion. The textile itself measures about 32.5"x46". Japanese Meiji textiles were widely exhibited in the west during turn of the 20th century at the international exposition. It was used to showcase the Japanese aesthetics with the techniques at their pinnacle. These expositions solidified the country's images overseas and felled the Japanese craze in the west, which turned out to be a long-lasting influence on the western art. Many pieces were purchased and stayed in the west. An important Japanese lacquer Maki-É Panel Depicting St. Petersburg on the River Neva, with the winter palace on the left and the academy of science on the right, 18th century. Nagasaki, 1780-1800 In black lacquer on copper, the front decorated in maki-é, the back inscribed, Vue Perspective des Bords de la Neva en descendant la Rivière entre le Palais d'hyver de sa Majesté Impériale et les batiments de l'Académie des Sciences à St Petersburg in gold and inlaid with flowers in mother of pearl. Measures: H 23 x W 39 cm The present plaque is identical to one in the Museum of Japanese History in Sakura and another one in the Museum of Peter the Great in St. Petersburg. (see: Oliver Impey & Christiaan Jörg, Japanese Export Lacquer, 1580-1850, p. 52-53) This last one was given to Catherine the Great in 1794 by the Swedish medical doctor Johan Arnold Stutzer who had served with the VOC in Deshima in 1787-1788. Apparently, such plaques were not unique and may have been made in several copies. This was certainly the case with the smaller lacquer oval portrait medallions (see for instance Uit Verre Streken, June 2017, no. 62) The scene of St. Petersburg was copied from an optical print taken by Stutzer to Japan, as shown by Yasumasa Oka of the Kobe City Museum. Stutzer in his diary writes: “I am the first to bring them (i.e. the Japanese) original pictures such as a view of St Petersburg and of Rudolf XV on horseback and try to have them made (in lacquer). According to the Japanese, it is the first time that these two pictures will be copied. Other products that I also ordered, for example, pictures of sea battles, are also appreciated as absolute masterpieces”. For two lacquered plaques depicting the sea battle of Dogger Bank in 1781 between the Dutch and the English navies, see Uit Verre Streken, December 2013, nr. 39 and March 2015, nr 56.
