Edwardian 18 Carat Gold Citrine Fob Seal, circa 1902
Located in Lancashire, Oldham
An impressive early Edwardian 18ct yellow gold citrine set fob seal dating from 1902. The original owner made the decision to keep the base blank which means the new owner still has the possibility to have a monogram or crest engraved. A nice detail is the hallmarks to this fob which date the fob from 1902 and the assay office of Chester, in North of England.   The design itself has a round hood at the top ideal for suspending from a chain or necklace. From there the applied wreath design and splayed, openwork panels meet the base which is ornately decorated in deeply chased foliate patterns. A wonderful antique fob seal...

Rare Art Nouveau Burmese Spinel Diamond Antique Pendant
Located in Chicago, IL
This rare pendant was made in Saint Petersburg between 1904 and 1908 by Carl Blank, jeweler of the Russian Imperial Court and Tsar Nicholas II. The pendant is finely crafted in matte platinum (front) and 14K gold (back). It features two excellent red spinels from Burma accented by old mine cut diamonds. The spinels were tested by Swiss Gemmological Institute in Basel (test report no. 87913) and found to be natural and untreated. Estimated total spinel weight is 2.70 carats. Approximate total diamond weight is 3.18 carats. In the early 1900s, platinum was an exotic metal. In Russia, it was rarely used in jewelry (not until 1930s). Apparently only jewelers of the Imperial court like Faberge, Bolin and Blank experimented with platinum. Marked on frame with 56 zolotnik old Russian gold standard (there was no mark for platinum at that time) and on bail with maker’s initials ‘ CB’ for Carl Blank, St. Petersburg assay mark with initials ‘AP’ for assay master Alexander Romanov...

15k Gold Art Nouveau Plique-à-jour Diamond and Pearl Necklace
By Mappin Brothers
Located in Venice, CA
A classic Art Nouveau design, this 15k rose gold necklace features stunning plique-à-jour, Rose Cut diamonds, and beautiful pearls. The centerpiece of the necklace is articulated, hinged in two places so that the flower and pearl drops dangle freely. Three plique-à-jour leaves are translucent—the loveliest matte soft green that fades into subtle purple highlights, clearly done by a master. Each cell of the leaf is filled with plique, with a white metal (platinum or white gold) creating contrast in the center of the leaf. Inside are a channel of bead set Rose Cut diamonds. A flower is suspended from the leaves, with multi-tones of peach to pale yellow that glow against the gold, with a prong-set diamond as its piston. The design work loops over, turning the bail into a scrolling foliate. The 15k gold appears rosy, as it has an incredible patina that shimmers with various hues of pink, gold, and green. “Plique-à-jour” translates from French as “letting in daylight” and is a charming technique used in jewelry throughout the 20th century. To create this effect, colored, transparent enamel is suspended between gold backless cells to allow light to illuminate the piece with vibrant colors, similar to a stained glass window. The flower hangs from a 15k gold classic alternating link chain...

14K Gold Edwardian Pearl and Sapphire Crescent Moon Pendant
Located in Venice, CA
This elongated crescent moon contains graduated alternating pearls and sapphires. The pearls are half-drilled and attached with a post from the back, while the sapphires are bezel set into gold settings that appear cup-like when viewed from the side. The sapphires are a dark shade of blue and have minor inclusions that indicate they are natural. The cut of the sapphires is an old cut with high tables—a beautiful cut with lots of the depth that reveals the age of these antique gemstones. Celestial jewelry was popular during the Victorian and Edwardian eras. This piece was originally a pin; we converted it to have a 14k gold bail and jump ring that allows it to dangle. We love that within this crescent moon, the dark blue of the sapphires evoke a midnight sky. A wonderful celestial piece that conveys moon, stars, and sky. The pendant weighs 4.5 grams and acid tests as 14k. At 3 1/8”, it has a nice long length, and is 1/8” thick. The bail is 5 x 7 mm. There are 12 sapphires that range in size from 2.75 - 1.25 mm and equal 1.25 carats. The 13 pearls range in size from 3.5 - 2.4 mm. The long length and shape of the crescent moon fit nicely next to other pendants, making this a great piece for stacking. It’s shown here with other celestial pieces, also available in our shop. Create your own galaxy on a chain with the Victorian 18K Gold Pearl Crescent Moon, 14K Gold Signature Galaxy Moon and Stars...

Antique Jade Chinese Pendant circa Late 18th to Early 19th Century Qing Dynasty
Located in Chesterland, OH
A very large hand-carved natural untreated Burmese jade pendant circa the late 18th to early 19th century Qing Dynasty. A very rare and unique size! China directly controlled the Central Asian jade-yielding regions of Hotan and Yarkand between about 1760 and 1820, during which time much fine nephrite was sent to Beijing for carving. Jadeite from Myanmar (Burma) reached the capital from the second quarter of the 18th century, and chromite- or graphite-flecked “spinach jade” from the Baikal region of Siberia was imported in the 19th century. The finest Qing dynasty jade...

Located in Jesmond, Newcastle Upon Tyne
A fine and impressive antique French enamel and 18 karat yellow gold pendant; part of our diverse estate jewelry and Edwardian jewellery collections. This fine and impressive antique pendant has been crafted in 18k gold. The French pendant displays a central collet set oval enamel panel displaying the profile of a lady in vibrant white, yellow and pink clothing, against a royal blue background. The pendant is signed to the reverse with the maker's mark 'Le Pémen, Limoges'. Antique Amuletic DozenRockCrystals CagedRing MedievalStyle GiltBronze Pendant
Located in Chicago, IL
This antique amuletic bronze framed pendant cages a dozen 7mm-diameter single-cut rock crystals that each feature a table-cut decagon crown, deep pavilion, 21 facets and uncut girdle, while the culets range from off-center to blunted. They are tightly set within four linked rings to overlap at the same angle in a sparkling single row. Seeming to retain a little of its original yellow-gold gilding on just the interior, the frame that surrounds each of the four sections of three crystals enables them to reflect pale-yellow-and-lime light when the pendant is viewed from certain angles. Suggesting French heritage, the Medieval Frankish culture in northern France made jewelry in similar segmented or openwork shapes of wheels or whorls, which were worn as gem-decorated disk-shaped brooches or gold-caged rock...

We are fortunate to know much of the world’s long and dazzling history of necklaces, as this type of jewelry was so treasured that it was frequently buried with its owners.

Lapis lazuli beads adorned necklaces unearthed from the royal graves at the ancient Iraqi civilization of Sumer, while the excavation of King Tut’s burial chamber revealed a sense of style that led to a frenzy of Art Deco designs, with artisans of the 1920s seeking to emulate the elegant work crafted by Ancient Egypt’s goldsmiths and jewelry makers.

In ancient times, pendant necklaces worn by royalty and nobles conferred wealth and prestige. Today, wearing jewelry is about personal expression: Luxury diamond necklaces exude confidence and can symbolize the celebratory nature of a deep romantic relationship, while paper-clip chain-link necklaces designed by the likes of goldsmith Faye Kim are firmly planted in the past as well as the present. Kim works exclusively with eco-friendly gold, and these fashionable, fun accessories owe to the design of 19th-century watch fobs.

For some, necklaces are thought of as being a solely feminine piece, but this widely loved accessory has been gender-neutral for eons. In fact, just as women rarely took to wearing a single necklace during the Renaissance, men of the era layered chains and valuable pendants atop their bejeweled clothing. In modern times, the free-spirited hippie and counterculture movements of the 1960s saw costume-jewelry designers celebrating self-expression through colorful multistrand necklaces and no shortage of beads, which were worn by anyone and everyone.

Even after all of these years, the necklace remains an irrefutable staple of any complete outfit. Although new trends in jewelry are constantly emerging, the glamour and beauty of the past continue to inform modern styles and designs. In a way, the cyclical history of the necklace differs little from its familiar looped form: The celebrated French jewelry house Van Cleef & Arpels found much inspiration in King Tut, and, now, their Alhambra collection is a go-to for modern royals. Vintage necklaces designed by David Webb — whose work landed him on the cover of Vogue in 1950, two years after opening his Manhattan shop — were likely inspired by the ornamental styles of ancient Greece, Mesopotamia and Egypt
