Leah Schrager is an artist who works between the web and New York City. She graduated in 2015 with an MFA in Fine Art from Parsons, The New School. In her work, she photographs, appears in, augments and markets her own image. She is interested in the line, movement and, biography of the female body. In 2010, she founded a new form of therapy as Sarah White, The Naked Therapist, followed by online performance @OnaArtist (Instagram 3 million+). Her project, “Ona,” an artist and musician, evolved out of the question of celebrity as art practice. With her performances, Schrager explores themes of sexuality, representation, and distribution. Her practice is situated in a contemporary hotbed of female (in)appropriateness, arousal, celebrity, fandom, and commercialism that seeks to explore female biography and labor in today’s global society. Schrager has been compared by journalists to such seminal figures as Marina Abramovic, Marcel Duchamp, Laurel Nakadate, Diane Fossey, and Sigmund Freud. Pioneering female illustrator Gwenda Morgan creates an exuberantly complex image of a squad of broom-riding - pointed-hatted witches with black cats in tow. They fly through an inky black moonlit sky and are witnessed by only a rooftop owl. With the simple means of black and white, Morgan has rendered a highly charged composition that pluses with electricity. The whole image is on the cusp of being abstract while being representational. Printed from the original block as part of the suite of 8 prints that accompanied the limited edition book Diary of a Land Girl, Whittington Press, 2000. The suite of prints was included with the first 50 copies of the book, and a further 8 suites were printed, from which this print comes.
Gwenda Morgan (1 February 1908 – 1991) was a British wood engraver. She lived in the town of Petworth in West Sussex.
Early life
Morgan was born in Petworth, her father having moved there to work at the ironmongers, Austen & Co, of which he later became proprietor. He was the son of a Welsh-born military farrier.
Education
Following school in Petworth and at Brighton and Hove High School, Morgan, studied at Goldsmiths' College of Art in London from 1926. From 1930 she attended the Grosvenor School of Modern Art in Pimlico where she was taught and strongly influenced by the principal, Iain Macnab. The Grosvenor School was a progressive art school and the championing of wood engraving and linocuts fitted with its democratic approach to the arts.

Presently I am working on a series of charcoal drawings titled “A Promised Land” which is the result
as well as a logical progression of my current engagement with art and ecology. The series drew
inspiration from my reading of Pranay Lal’s Indica: A Deep Natural History of the Indian
Subcontinent (2016). The book’s focus on sheer life force and exuberance stemming out of India’s
natural history and the science behind life not only inspired me but also forced me to think deeply
about the state of life on the planet. The title, therefore, is ironically suggestive of the way humankind
is (mis)treating natural resources to fulfil its unbridled greed. The series across thirty or more
drawings attempts to build an apocalyptic vision of life where the natural world and the animals who
inhabit it bear the brunt of over-exploitation. The first out of the six drawings which are complete by
now shows the dead root-like structure of a tree which looks fossilised and bears the expression of a
dissatisfied creature which seems to be stranded on a lonely landscape. The second drawing is that of
a neatly fleeced skeleton of a blue whale on a patch of land. The image brings to the forefront issues
of poaching and illegal hunting of whales for commercial gains. The third drawing again deals with
the same issue but this time the goriness of the misdeeds of humankind is in the shape of a decaying
carcass of an elephant. It is half covered in decayed skin and half visible revealing the rib cage.
The fourth drawing is a highly metaphorical one where a large pile of elephant tusks is seen neatly
arranged and bears an uncanny resemblance with a human pyre. The fifth drawing is that of a synthetic
net left on the landscape. The image is a telling account of the ill effects of fishing which results in
bycatch thereby impacting the water beds...
