Hardie writes, "An avenue of ships' masts rising dark against an evening sky. The light gleams on the pathway of water down the centre. A man and woman, by a boat, in foreground, to the left. Born in Newburgh near Aberdeen, James McBey attended evening classes at Graydon’s School of Art and taught himself etching, building his own press at the age of fifteen.
