How Much are Real Danish Chairs?
Finding the Right seating for You
With entire areas of our homes reserved for “sitting rooms,” the value of quality antique and vintage seating cannot be overstated.
Fortunately, the design of side chairs, armchairs and other lounge furniture — since what were, quite literally, the early perches of our ancestors — has evolved considerably.
Among the earliest standard seating furniture were stools. Egyptian stools, for example, designed for one person with no seat back, were x-shaped and typically folded to be tucked away. These rudimentary chairs informed the design of Greek and Roman stools, all of which were a long way from Sori Yanagi's Butterfly stool or Alvar Aalto's Stool 60. In the 18th century and earlier, seats with backs and armrests were largely reserved for high nobility.
The seating of today is more inclusive but the style and placement of chairs can still make a statement. Antique desk chairs and armchairs designed in the style of Louis XV, which eventually included painted furniture and were often made of rare woods, feature prominently curved legs as well as Chinese themes and varied ornaments. Much like the thrones of fairy tales and the regency, elegant lounges crafted in the Louis XV style convey wealth and prestige. In the kitchen, the dining chair placed at the head of the table is typically reserved for the head of the household or a revered guest.
Of course, with luxurious vintage or antique furnishings, every chair can seem like the best seat in the house. Whether your preference is stretching out on a plush sofa, such as the Serpentine, designed by Vladimir Kagan, or cozying up in a vintage wingback chair, there is likely to be a comfy classic or contemporary gem for you on 1stDibs.
With respect to the latest obsessions in design, cane seating has been cropping up everywhere, from sleek armchairs to lounge chairs, while bouclé fabric, a staple of modern furniture design, can be seen in mid-century modern, Scandinavian modern and Hollywood Regency furniture styles.
Admirers of the sophisticated craftsmanship and dark woods frequently associated with mid-century modern seating can find timeless furnishings in our expansive collection of lounge chairs, dining chairs and other items — whether they’re vintage editions or alluring official reproductions of iconic designs from the likes of Hans Wegner or from Charles and Ray Eames. Shop our inventory of Egg chairs, designed in 1958 by Arne Jacobsen, the Florence Knoll lounge chair and more.
No matter your style, the collection of unique chairs, sofas and other seating on 1stDibs is surely worthy of a standing ovation.

- 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022To tell if an Arne Jacobsen egg chair is real, check for the label. Newer models have a Republic of Fritz Hansen label attached to the fabric, older models have them attached to the base of the chair. You can also look for a sticker on the cylinder that attaches to the base with a Fritz Hansen label and a four-digit date. - Is my vintage Eames chair real?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertMarch 22, 2022To know if your vintage Eames chair is real, check for a reclining mechanism. On original chairs, the back had a permanent reclined position, so no mechanism is necessary. Also, a vintage piece is around 32 inches high, while later reproductions are normally bigger. On 1stDibs, shop a selection of expertly vetted Eames chairs.
- 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022To tell if a Tulip Chair is real, check for the Knoll logo and if Eero Saarinen’s signature is engraved on the underside of the chair. These are original markings that should not exist on knock-offs. Shop a large collection of Tulip Chairs from some of the world’s top sellers on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022To spot an authentic Knoll Barcelona chair, first check the back cushion to make sure it retains its shape and doesn’t sag. The chair should be slightly taller than its steel frame and curved in shape. The upholstery should be excellent and even, with no signs of improper workmanship. For vintage chairs, look for a Knoll sticker or label on the bottom cushion. For chairs made after 1996, check for a “Knoll Studios” stamp on the frame. Shop authentic Knoll Barcelona chairs on 1stDibs from some of the world’s top sellers.
- 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 13, 2024To tell if a Thonet chair is real, you can use Thonet's authenticity verification service. To take advantage of it, you will need to take many photographs of the chair from different angles and close-up images of markings and paper labels. You can learn more about the authentication process on the Thonet website. Shop a diverse assortment of Thonet chairs on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 21, 2024To tell if a Wishbone chair is real, closely examine its construction. A genuine chair will usually have a one-piece back and armrest unit with no visible seams, and the legs should be smooth with an equal, regularly shaped taper. In addition, the seat will typically have a very tight paper weave. Genuine Wishbone chairs often have a label with the Carl Hansen logo and Hans Wegner's signature hidden under their seats. However, these labels can come loose and may be missing, even on real Wishbone chairs. If you're unsure about the authenticity of your piece, consult a certified appraiser or experienced antiques dealer. Find a variety of Wishbone chairs on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022To tell if a Womb Chair is real, check for the Knoll logo and if Eero Saarinen’s is signature engraved on the underside of the chair. These are original markings that should not exist on knock-offs. Another thing to check is the stitching on the chair, an original will be tight and perfect. Shop a large collection of Womb Chairs from some of the world’s top sellers on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertMay 5, 2023To tell if your Herman Miller chair is real, look for the legendary manufacturer’s specific logomarks on the product (these logomarks can be found on the company’s official website). There is also the manufacturing label, which is usually found under the seat. All of the classic Herman Miller designs are paired with a certificate of authenticity. Some designs may also have a medallion attached to certify their authenticity. You can then check trusted online resources to determine if the information on the label is correct for the style of chair. Because there are many convincing reproductions out there, you may also wish to have a certified appraiser assist you with the authentication process. Shop a collection of authentic Herman Miller chairs on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022One of the first places to check when determining the authenticity of your Eames chair, is the underside. Nearly all chairs were marked or labeled. Shop a collection of Eames chairs from some of the world’s top sellers on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertMarch 22, 2022The best way to tell if an Arne Jacobsen chair is real is to look for the label. On designs made before 2006, the label appears on the base of the chair. The designs varied over the years, but usually say "Made in Denmark by Fritzhansen." Chairs made after 2006 usually feature a sewn-on label along the fabric on the bottom of the seat. The label typically says "Republic of Fritz Hansen." Shop a collection of expertly vetted Arne Jacobsen chairs on 1stDibs.
