Creator: George Nelson
Creator: A. Brandt Ranch Oak Furniture
Vintage 1949 Mid-Century Modern Custom L-Shaped Office Desk by George Nelson
Located in Lafayette, IN
This remarkable piece is a one-off desk/wardrobe/bar/bookcase/storage cabinet custom-designed by George Nelson in 1949 to match his Basic Cabinet Series (BCS) for Herman Miller. The desk was made specifically for a client in the Promontory Apartment Building in Chicago designed by Nelson's associate, and world-renowned architect, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. The entire apartment was outfitted in pieces from George Nelson's Basic Cabinet Series for Herman Miller that sat, untouched for nearly 70 years in their original setting! In addition to two aluminium sconces, this piece also features hidden, fluorescent lighting mounted in the upper canopy as a clever solution to Mies van der Rohe's lack of ceiling fixtures. This is a gorgeous, grandiose, and extremely rare piece of design history that will instantly outfit an entire office in striking style! Features: Desk: - Book-matched walnut veneer - Built-in Bar - Built in coat closet/wardrobe - Dual aluminum sconces - Hidden, indirect fluorescent lighting - Silver-plated Herman Miller hardware - Dual "floating" book shelves - Tapered, cantilevered peninsula desk...

Vintage 4 Pc August Brandt Ranch Oak Rustic Sectional Sofa & Lounge Arm Chair
Located in Dayton, OH
Vintage four piece A. Brandt Ranch Oak sectional sofa and armchair. Made of oak featuring angular form with Cowboys, Indians, and ranches, are exactly how this fine country of ours started. In 1931, American furniture designer Thomas Molesworthy created a popular range of upmarket Ranch Style furniture, borrowing ideas from the Craftsman style, as well as the Eastern Lodge style. Molesworthy's originals were handcrafted and expensive. Popular demand for this type of American furniture at a more affordable price gave rise to the Brandt Ranch Oak furniture range. A. Brandt of Fort Worth began producing well-made, solid, comfortable ranch-style furniture in the later 1930's. About A. Brandt Co. A. Brandt Ranch Oak Furniture was made for nearly fifty years in Fort Worth, Texas and has been out-of-production for more than two decades. A. Brandt Company, Inc., debuted the Ranch Oak furniture line in Fort Worth in 1938 and continued manufacturing Ranch Oak into the 1980s. In 1986, the Brandt family sold the furniture company, which went out of business not long afterwards. In the fall of 1988, the entire contents of the factory sold at auction. Patented ""Ranch Oak"" furniture was one of many lines of furniture produced by A. Brandt Company, Inc. German immigrant August Brandt...

Vintage Ranch Oak Pair of Small Credenzas or Buffet Cabinets, A. Brandt Company
Located in Topeka, KS
Fabulous pair of small credenzas or buffet cabinets by A. Brandt Company comprised of solid ranch oak with a natural oak finish. Wonderful vintage condition. One top has a joint crack that had occurred from age, but it has been repaired, it just added beauty to the patina. Please see photos, circa mid-20th century. Yes! You are seeing double!! Aren’t these vintage ranch oak cabinets beautiful?? They are comprised of rustic solid ranch oak with a natural oak finish that is signature to A. Brandt Company furniture. The natural oak finish was made by sealing the wood, double coating it with lacquer, and applying liquid wax and Spanish whiting. Both cabinets have double doors that open to storage with a single shelf in each unit and a pair of drawers. One of the shelves in one unit is outfitted with pull-out wire hooks for hanging cups or barware. Plus, the doors and drawers feature the A. Brandt signature wood pulls. There are so many options these cabinets have to offer. They would be useful in your rustic office or den for books and office supplies or out in your ranch living room with a pair of lamps on top and linens underneath, in your dining room for tableware, or rec room as a dry bar! And strikingly useful as a pair of nightstands!! Versatile, simple, and oh-so-full-of-style! A Brandt Company was established in 1900 by German immigrant August Brandt...

Midcentury George Nelson Gentlemens Secretary Chest
Located in Pasadena, TX
George Nelson George Nelson (1908-1986) was an important modernist whose work cut across the fields of interior, industrial and exhibition design. Nelson studied architecture at Yale University in the 1920s, and in the next two decades earned a strong reputation as a writer on design for Architectural Forum, Interiors and Fortune. In 1945 Nelson began a long association with the Herman Miller Furniture Company of Zeeland, Michigan, where as head designer he developed an innovative line of furniture and commissioned new designs from others. His first commission was Isamu Noguchi`s biomorphic glass-topped coffee table, which began production in 1947, the first of many designs that the sculptor would create for Herman Miller in the late Forties. Nelson also was responsible for bringing the designs of Charles Eames to Herman Miller, and he collaborated with R. Buckminster Fuller on a number of projects. Among Nelson`s own creations are classic works of 1950s design, including the bubble lamp, ball clock, marshmallow sofa and the pole-supported wall-storage system. Nelson also designed numerous exhibitions, including the 1959 American National Exhibition in Moscow, and the Chrysler Corporation display at the 1964 New York World`s Fair. Vintage midcentury George Nelson walnut secretary 1960s A great example of early George Nelson design. Secretary desk and dresser...

Shop Unique Furniture on 1stDibs

When it comes to shopping for vintage, new and antique furniture — whether you’re finally moving into that long-coveted loft apartment, ranch-style home, townhouse or furnishing your weekend house on the lake — you should think of your home as a stage for the seating, tables, lighting, storage cabinets and other pieces that best match your personality.

Coziness, comfort and creating a welcoming space are among the important things to consider when buying furniture, whether that means seeking strict cohesion or rooms characterized by a mix-and-match assembly of varying shapes, colors and materials. And for those who now work from home, exercise, eat and relax within the same four walls every day, they’ll also want to think about flexibility and an innovative approach.

Have you built your dream kitchen?

Is your current living-room furniture all that it could be?

Does your toast-worthy bar or vintage bar cart exude equal parts class and cheeriness?

And importantly, is your home officebackyard or otherwise — a happy one, regardless of the design style you happen to gravitate toward?

Although mid-century modern, rustic, minimalist, Art Deco and contemporary looks remain popular, they aren’t the only styles available to design connoisseurs.

Furniture styles are nothing if not fluid, meaning what’s popular one year may not be the next. That’s why it’s crucial to not only pay attention to interior-design trends but also focus on the styles that speak to you. That way, you (and your interior designer, if that is in the plans) can work to create a home that’s entirely your own, complete with impressively modern decor as well as an array of history’s universally renowned iconic designs.

It’s difficult to single out well-recognized designs from what is a crowded pantheon of celebrated and seminal furnishings. Certain outstanding designs have such stellar quality they’ve endured for decades as bona fide cultural treasures, still being manufactured, in many cases, by the same venerable companies that shepherded them into being (think Herman Miller, Knoll and Fritz Hansen). Some works come immediately to mind as contenders for any short list. When you’re discussing the most popular mid-century modern chairs, for example, no tally would be complete without citing designs by Arne Jacobsen, Charlotte Perriand, Charles and Ray Eames and Hans Wegner.

Good furniture, be it authentic vintage furniture or new & custom furniture, allows you to comfortably sit and tell your favorite stories. Great furniture tells a story of its own.

On 1stDibs, find everything from sofas to serveware to credenzas to coffee tables, and every other type of antique, vintage and new furniture you need to create a singular space that you’ll be proud to call home.
