"Cité Radieuse" Staricase by Charles Edouard Jeanneret Known as Le Corbusier
Located in Altwies, LU
Larch uprights, eleven steps in exotic wood. Ramps in black lacquered metal made by Jean Prouvé workshop. Restoration of use and maintenance on the ramps. Provenance: Housing unit, Briey en Forêt. The staircase, identical in each duplex, is the result of a close collaboration between Jean Prouve and Le Corbusier. Its beginnings date back to 1922. Le Corbusier wanted to create then "vertical garden cities", capable of responding simultaneously to the aspiration of the individual house (in contact with nature) and to the advantages of the collective building (access to modern facilities ). This idea, perfected during the 1930s, led to a large building project in 1939 with "inner streets", "duplex" apartments, equipped roof terraces and integrated businesses. The Housing Unit of Briey, also called Radiant City of Briey-en-Forêt, is a housing unit built between 1959 and 1960 in Meurthe-et-Moselle by the French-Swiss architect Le Corbusier according to the model he has established for Marseilles. The housing project is part of a broader project of a new residential district in the heart of the forest, in this town in the Lorraine coalfield. It is Georges-Henri Pingusson who is the chief architect of this neighbourhood project and who also realizes two sets of 100 homes and a school near the unit. The goal is to house the population then in full increase in connection with the expansion of iron mines and the steel industry. In 1955, Le Corbusier officially contacted the Briey town hall, he was named chief architect of the project and André Wogenscky...

Pyramid by Georg Jensen Sterling Silver Flatware Set 8 Service 75 pieces Dinner
Located in Big Bend, WI
The Pyramid pattern was inspired by the styling of the Art Deco period with it's sleek and modern lines. The name Georg Jensen is synonymous with timeless style and dedication to the art of slow and steady craftsmanship. Georg Jensen is one of the world's most significant silversmiths, who formed an international following due to his innovative and sculptural work and his collaborations with other very talented designers. He started in Copenhagen as a sculptor and goldsmith working his way into silversmithing. He was the first to blur lines between artistry and craftsmanship with his ornamental design in the early 1900's. In 1904 her opened his first shop and quickly gained a following, with those stating he "never followed fashion, he created it". In 1918 he opened a much larger shop and when he passed in 1935 he already had an international reputation for superb craftsmanship. He was reigned as "the greatest silversmith of the last 300 years" when he passed. Fabulous Pyramid by Georg Jensen...

Cassina Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret & Charlotte Perriand LC4 Chaise Lounge
Located in London, GB
Now known as the 4 Chaise Longue à Reglage Continu, the LC4 chaise longue was originally introduced at the Salon d’Automne in 1929 by the designers Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret and Charlotte Perriand. Since then the LC4 chaise has become one of the most iconic furniture designs of the 20th Century, with Cassina taking on production of the piece in 1965. This model of the chaise longue was made in 1998. Constructed from a lightweight tubular steel frame, a signature of the designers’ collections, the chaise has been ergonomically designed, following the contours of the body to ensure ultimate support and comfort. Sitting on a steel base in a painted black finish, the chaise has a mechanism which allows it to be reclined further or put in a more upright position. The seat cushion is upholstered in black leather with a matching black bolster...

Shop Unique Furniture on 1stDibs

When it comes to shopping for vintage, new and antique furniture — whether you’re finally moving into that long-coveted loft apartment, ranch-style home, townhouse or furnishing your weekend house on the lake — you should think of your home as a stage for the seating, tables, lighting, storage cabinets and other pieces that best match your personality.

Coziness, comfort and creating a welcoming space are among the important things to consider when buying furniture, whether that means seeking strict cohesion or rooms characterized by a mix-and-match assembly of varying shapes, colors and materials. And for those who now work from home, exercise, eat and relax within the same four walls every day, they’ll also want to think about flexibility and an innovative approach.

Have you built your dream kitchen?

Is your current living-room furniture all that it could be?

Does your toast-worthy bar or vintage bar cart exude equal parts class and cheeriness?

And importantly, is your home officebackyard or otherwise — a happy one, regardless of the design style you happen to gravitate toward?

Although mid-century modern, rustic, minimalist, Art Deco and contemporary looks remain popular, they aren’t the only styles available to design connoisseurs.

Furniture styles are nothing if not fluid, meaning what’s popular one year may not be the next. That’s why it’s crucial to not only pay attention to interior-design trends but also focus on the styles that speak to you. That way, you (and your interior designer, if that is in the plans) can work to create a home that’s entirely your own, complete with impressively modern decor as well as an array of history’s universally renowned iconic designs.

It’s difficult to single out well-recognized designs from what is a crowded pantheon of celebrated and seminal furnishings. Certain outstanding designs have such stellar quality they’ve endured for decades as bona fide cultural treasures, still being manufactured, in many cases, by the same venerable companies that shepherded them into being (think Herman Miller, Knoll and Fritz Hansen). Some works come immediately to mind as contenders for any short list. When you’re discussing the most popular mid-century modern chairs, for example, no tally would be complete without citing designs by Arne Jacobsen, Charlotte Perriand, Charles and Ray Eames and Hans Wegner.

Good furniture, be it authentic vintage furniture or new & custom furniture, allows you to comfortably sit and tell your favorite stories. Great furniture tells a story of its own.

On 1stDibs, find everything from sofas to serveware to credenzas to coffee tables, and every other type of antique, vintage and new furniture you need to create a singular space that you’ll be proud to call home.
