Armchairs with Terra Cotta Fabric by Guillerme and Chambron, France 1960s
Located in Utrecht, NL
The “Edouard” lounge chair is often described as a “caquetoire”, in other (non-French) words a conversation chair. This type of seating was an armchair style which emerged during the European Renaissance in France. As the name suggests, this type of chair was meant for sitting for elongated periods to chat. Generally, these chairs were also highly regarded for their aesthetic value as well, which can also be said about this exceptional chair model. The Edouard is a sculptural model with an oak frame that is characteristic of the French designer duo. The design showcases the wide variety of shapes and forms of the solid oak frame, from the hand-sculpted, organic curving lines to the straighter spindles consisting the backrest. Naturally, a conversation chair needs to be first and foremost functional and comfortable, therefore the backs are slightly tilted, and the seats are raised, aided by the generous seat and back cushions. The reddish coloured upholstery beautifully complements the wood and the small loops of the fabric highlight the smoothness of the frame’s surfaces. The French caquetoire chairs...

Antique William Roger Quadruple Plate Sugar Bowl & Gorham Sterling Silver Spoons
Located in Dayton, OH
Antique turn of the century 13 piece sugar bowl and hanging spoon set, featuring a trophy urn style bowl with etched palm leaves on the body, brackets to support twelve sugar spoons, squirrels in the pierced handles and a sparrow shaped finial. Set includes 11 Gorham sterling silver demitasse spoons in the New Queens pattern (introduced 1895); sold by J.E. Caldwell & Co. Bowl and lid by William Rogers (cross and keystone mark, circa 1900-1910), design number 57. "Gorham Silver was founded in Providence, Rhode Island, in 1831 by Jabez Gorham, a master craftsman, in partnership with Henry L. Webster. The firm's chief product was spoons of coin silver, but also made thimbles, combs, jewelry, and other small items. In 1865, the Rhode Island legislature granted a charter in the name of Gorham Manufacturing Company. During the heyday of American silver manufacturing, approximately 1850–1940, Gorham was highly influential. The company has produced matching hollowware in both sterling and silverplate, as well as running a foundry for bronze sculpture. The White House has used Gorham silver services during many administrations including those of Lincoln, Grant, and George W. Bush. Gorham artisans also sculpted several famous statues housed in the Capitol's Rotunda, overlooking the Museum of Natural History in New York, and topping the Rhode Island State House. Gorham has also designed a number of elaborate trophies for sporting events, including the Borg-Warner Trophy for the Indianapolis 500, designed by Robert J. Hill. The company has changed hands multiple times beginning with Textron (1967), to Dansk International Designs (1989), to Brown-Forman Corporation (1991), to the Lenox Group (2005), to Clarion Capital Partners (2009), now operating under the name Lenox Corporation." "William Hazen Rogers (born May 13, 1801) was an American master silversmith and a pioneer in the silver-plate industry and whose work and name have survived to the present day. Rogers partnered with other silversmiths at times, and his company and trademarks were eventually taken over by larger companies. Rogers was born on a farm on May 13, 1801, to Sarah Reynolds (1777-?) and Asa Rogers (1798-1824). After he left home, he went on to become a silversmith, watchmaker and jeweler. From 1820 to 1825, Rogers was an apprentice to Joseph Church, a silversmith and watchmaker in Hartford. In 1825, Rogers became partners with Church and their company, Church & Rogers, initially manufactured silver-plate flatware and hollowware. He was also partner, from 1832 to 1838, with Asa Harris Rogers, his younger brother, as "A Rogers Jr. & Co." while still associated with Church & Rogers. Rogers – together with his two brothers and, later, his son – was responsible for more than 100 patterns of silver and silver-plated cutlery and serving dishes. Many of Roger's designs were influenced by Louis XIV-style patterns of the 17th and 18th century in France, and he was best known for his Elberon pattern and "Presidential" cutlery series. The companies in which one or more of the original...

French Waxed Oak Swinging Bar Serving Cabinet by Guillerme et Chambron
Located in Shippensburg, PA
WAXED OAK AND TILE SWINGING BAR CABINET By Robert Guillerme and Jacques Chambron designed for Votre Maison with original Spanish ceramic tiles unmarked, circa 1970 Item # 401PFP02A A rare, fascinating and incredibly relevant tuckaway bar cabinet designed by Robert Guillerme and Jacques Chambron circa 1970, it is exquisitely crafted from solid European oak that is lightly brushed to raise the grain and retains an early waxy finish. The upright post is lighted with a lamp fixture at the top ready to receive the shade of your choice while wire is set in a channel in the back of the post so that it remains mostly hidden by the wall. It is designed to be screwed into the wall with two bolts, these covered with oak dowels (one missing), but the cabinet can still be removed from the upright by withdrawing two large dowels. The bar cabinet is designed to present as a simple naturalistic facade with horizontal set planks embellished with a simple bevelled reveal from the upper planks to the inner planks of oak. The top of the cabinet is inset to receive three ceramic tiles so that drinks can be prepared and set upon the top. Once the cabinet is swung open, you can prepare drinks easily with two shelves in the upper for glasses and accessories while the tiled surface at the bottom can hold the liquids. It is was produced by the firm Votre Maison ("Your Home") owned by Guillerme and Chambron together with master cabinetmaker Émile Dariosecq. An incredibly fun and compelling form that is easily lived with and that, most importantly, remains in fine original condition. Measurements: 58 3/4" H to highest point of the lamp; 39 1/4" H to highest point of the bar; 11 1/2" D x 29 1/2" W Condition Report: Very minor surface wear, presents beautifully; no lamp shade present; original wiring for European outlets - we can have this rewired upon request; minor white marks/scuffs/blemishes. Missing one oak...

Guillerme et Chambron, Oak & Smoked Glass Coffee Table, France, Mid-Century
Located in New York, NY
Robert Guillerme studied design and architecture at the École Boule, graduating in 1934. After the Second World War he moved to Lille, in the north of France, where he decorated homes and designed furniture for the well regarded Rogier workshops. In 1948 Jacques Chambron left his work as a painter and decorator on the Rue Nollet in Paris, and relocated his family to join Guillerme. The two had met in 1940 while imprisoned by the Germans in East Prussia and bonded over, among other more obvious things, their shared passion for design. In 1949 the pair discovered Émile Dariosecq, a master cabinet maker who had a shop in the city, and who was willing to produce their designs. The three started Votre Maison. The association was destined to be as influential as prolific. Not only did Votre Maison produce over two thousand models during the later half of the twentieth century, it also left an indelible stamp on design of the 50s, 60s and 70s. The company’s output served as a model for a vast field of livable contemporaneous design. The soul of Guillerme et Chambron’s work was in the company’s name (“Your House"). Their focus was as keenly attuned to functionality—furniture’s use in daily life—as to the creation of innovative design. For the pair of designers the home was envisioned as a place where the family could live both comfortably and in aesthetic harmony. Robert Guillerme, who designed most of the work, possessed a limitless creative ambition, producing designs for everything from grand dressers and sideboards to the smallest elements of a space, such as pedestals, shelving, benches, and lighting. This steady output of beautiful furniture bucked convention not merely in the equal emphasis Guillerme placed on function and aesthetics, but in the almost paradoxical creation...

Shop Unique Furniture on 1stDibs

When it comes to shopping for vintage, new and antique furniture — whether you’re finally moving into that long-coveted loft apartment, ranch-style home, townhouse or furnishing your weekend house on the lake — you should think of your home as a stage for the seating, tables, lighting, storage cabinets and other pieces that best match your personality.

Coziness, comfort and creating a welcoming space are among the important things to consider when buying furniture, whether that means seeking strict cohesion or rooms characterized by a mix-and-match assembly of varying shapes, colors and materials. And for those who now work from home, exercise, eat and relax within the same four walls every day, they’ll also want to think about flexibility and an innovative approach.

Have you built your dream kitchen?

Is your current living-room furniture all that it could be?

Does your toast-worthy bar or vintage bar cart exude equal parts class and cheeriness?

And importantly, is your home officebackyard or otherwise — a happy one, regardless of the design style you happen to gravitate toward?

Although mid-century modern, rustic, minimalist, Art Deco and contemporary looks remain popular, they aren’t the only styles available to design connoisseurs.

Furniture styles are nothing if not fluid, meaning what’s popular one year may not be the next. That’s why it’s crucial to not only pay attention to interior-design trends but also focus on the styles that speak to you. That way, you (and your interior designer, if that is in the plans) can work to create a home that’s entirely your own, complete with impressively modern decor as well as an array of history’s universally renowned iconic designs.

It’s difficult to single out well-recognized designs from what is a crowded pantheon of celebrated and seminal furnishings. Certain outstanding designs have such stellar quality they’ve endured for decades as bona fide cultural treasures, still being manufactured, in many cases, by the same venerable companies that shepherded them into being (think Herman Miller, Knoll and Fritz Hansen). Some works come immediately to mind as contenders for any short list. When you’re discussing the most popular mid-century modern chairs, for example, no tally would be complete without citing designs by Arne Jacobsen, Charlotte Perriand, Charles and Ray Eames and Hans Wegner.

Good furniture, be it authentic vintage furniture or new & custom furniture, allows you to comfortably sit and tell your favorite stories. Great furniture tells a story of its own.

On 1stDibs, find everything from sofas to serveware to credenzas to coffee tables, and every other type of antique, vintage and new furniture you need to create a singular space that you’ll be proud to call home.
