Folding chair model JH 512 designed by Hans J. Wegner for Johannes Hansen, 1949
Located in Stockholm, SE
Hans J. Wegner is the father of Danish design and is well known for creating some of the most iconic chairs of the past 100 years. The son of a cobbler, Wegner brought Danish design to the international stage through his deep understanding and enjoyment of wood as well as an eye for beautiful and ergonomic design that had hitherto existed. Wegner is seen as the most influential designer within the Danish movement and his early innate ability with wood matured into the gift of an unprecedented amount of over 500 beautiful and functional gifts to the pantheon of design. Hans J Wegner brought Danish furniture to a world stage through his simple, elegant and ergonomic chairs. His CH24 models still litter the offices of design and architectural practices globally and his earliest pieces have become rare design milestones in museums and galleries. Hans J Wegner is certainly one of the most important designers of the 20th Century. Wegner’s first renowned chair came though his work with the Chairmen of the Danish Cabinetmaker’s Guild; Johannes Hansen. Through their intellectual relationship Wegner was able to design a chair he christened “the round one” in 1949 and would go on to be called the defining name; “the chair”. This elegant, restrained, yet organic chair was a pivotal design for Wegner and signalled the beginning of his own unique reign over seat furniture worldwide. This chair also illustrated the point at which the wider world took proper notice of Scandinavian design with it triggering the first American editorial spotlight on Danish Design. The influence and fame of this design can again be recognised in the fact that it was chosen as the seating for the 1960 American Presidential Election debates and shipped from Denmark especially for the occasion. Thus giving the “no.501” its occasional name: “the Kennedy...

1971 MCM Lane Dresser Credenza Buffet Tower Suite Collection Walnut & Rosewood
Located in Topeka, KS
Spectacular vintage Mid-Century Modern dresser, credenza, buffet, or sideboard Lane Furniture Tower Suite Collection comprised of walnut, rosewood and chrome details, hardware, & door fronts, 9 drawers, and a black painted plinth base. Beautiful condition, keeping in mind that this is vintage and not new so will have signs of use and wear even if it has been refinished or restored. The top has been refinished and a coat of poly applied; the rest of body has been cleaned and Danish oiled; and the black plinth base has a fresh coat of black paint. Repaired 2 small veneer chips on top & bottom of back right corner. Please see photos and zoom in for details as they are part of the condition report. We attempt to portray any imperfections. Circa, 10-18-1971. There are plenty of dressers in this world… and then occasionally you come across a dresser with style that TOWERS over the others…like this vintage “Tower Suite Collection” piece by Lane Furniture!! It is comprised of a stunning walnut frame, 9 drawers total, and a black painted plinth base. It features double doors in the center with rosewood door fronts, rectangular chrome pulls, and three drawers enclosed behind the double doors. It has three large walnut dovetailed drawers on both sides of the double doors featuring rosewood handles with chrome detail on each end and decorative rosewood square inlays on the cabinet top edges. It is a gorgeous example of high-quality craftsmanship constructed with exquisite woods and attention to detail quintessential of Lane Furniture. It is going to be a fabulous dresser in your bedroom but maybe you love this piece and don’t necessarily need a dresser at this time. No problem! It would be marvelous used as a credenza, buffet, or sideboard in your dining room, family room, or study. Place it under a large mirror in the entry or adorn it with artwork, a sculpture, or a wonderful pair of lamps. It is versatile, has tons of adequate storage space, and an impeccable style sure to make a bold statement in your home! This is a classic beauty with a stunning Mid-Century Modern presence that you are sure to love for years to come. Lane was founded in 1912 by Edward Hudson Lane at the age of 21, upon his father’s suggestion after he, John Edward Lane, bought a small packing-box plant in Altavista, Virginia. Edward procured a loan and converted the factory to make cedar chests and named it The Standard Red Cedar Chest Co. Sales were good and the company expanded. But during WWI, with the banning of rail freight deemed non-essential, they began making pine ammunition boxes. This is notable as it led to an assembly line which was revolutionary and became the first moving conveyor assembly system in the furniture industry. After the war, with sales still increasing, Ed Lane decided he could risk giving the company his name and changed it to The Lane Co...

Restored Hans J. Wegner for Andreas Tuck AT-319 Drop-Leaf Rosewood Dining Table
Located in Philadelphia, PA
This incredible table was designed by Danish legend Hans J. Wegner for production by Andreas Tuck Mobelfabrik, who was responsible for many of Wegner's early designs and established the precedent of exceptional build quality we know from Wegner pieces today. There were a few versions of this table, some in other woods, but all of them smaller. We have the largest version of this table ever produced, the AT-319, which extends up to just shy of 10 feet long with both drop-leaf panels attached and deployed. This is also a rosewood model, long held as the most desirable. The quality of this table is among the best from the era. Easily comparable to other exceptional pieces by Wegner, Finn Juhl, and Fritz Hansen. The base is entirely chrome plated steel with precision-manufactured steel bars added for support. The hinges for the drop-leaves are also of steel. Beneath the table, the mechanism for the sliding panels which hold the leaves up is crafted of solid wood and securely mounted the top with tens of screws. The classic attention to detail by Andreas Tuck has resulted in bookmatched rosewood both atop and beneath the table, a measure not taken by other factories for cost-saving. There were absolutely no cost-saving measures for this table's production. This table is in original condition, but will receive a complete restoration upon purchase. This involves a laborious process, including careful hand-sanding and chemical stripping of the top. A new finish is applied with industrial-grade tools, then sealed using a clear lacquer. Finally, it will spend hours in the polishing booth, resulting in an exceptional shine. When complete, this table will look better than it did new. Our in-house professionals have decades of experience working on the most exclusive pieces. In the last few photos are other pieces that we have restored so that you may get a sense of our work. Nanna Ditzel Rosewood Desk This is the polished finish we think will suit the piece best. It allows the rosewood to shine in full glory and creates incredible contrast. Florence Knoll Rosewood Cabinets...

Shop Unique Furniture on 1stDibs

When it comes to shopping for vintage, new and antique furniture — whether you’re finally moving into that long-coveted loft apartment, ranch-style home, townhouse or furnishing your weekend house on the lake — you should think of your home as a stage for the seating, tables, lighting, storage cabinets and other pieces that best match your personality.

Coziness, comfort and creating a welcoming space are among the important things to consider when buying furniture, whether that means seeking strict cohesion or rooms characterized by a mix-and-match assembly of varying shapes, colors and materials. And for those who now work from home, exercise, eat and relax within the same four walls every day, they’ll also want to think about flexibility and an innovative approach.

Have you built your dream kitchen?

Is your current living-room furniture all that it could be?

Does your toast-worthy bar or vintage bar cart exude equal parts class and cheeriness?

And importantly, is your home officebackyard or otherwise — a happy one, regardless of the design style you happen to gravitate toward?

Although mid-century modern, rustic, minimalist, Art Deco and contemporary looks remain popular, they aren’t the only styles available to design connoisseurs.

Furniture styles are nothing if not fluid, meaning what’s popular one year may not be the next. That’s why it’s crucial to not only pay attention to interior-design trends but also focus on the styles that speak to you. That way, you (and your interior designer, if that is in the plans) can work to create a home that’s entirely your own, complete with impressively modern decor as well as an array of history’s universally renowned iconic designs.

It’s difficult to single out well-recognized designs from what is a crowded pantheon of celebrated and seminal furnishings. Certain outstanding designs have such stellar quality they’ve endured for decades as bona fide cultural treasures, still being manufactured, in many cases, by the same venerable companies that shepherded them into being (think Herman Miller, Knoll and Fritz Hansen). Some works come immediately to mind as contenders for any short list. When you’re discussing the most popular mid-century modern chairs, for example, no tally would be complete without citing designs by Arne Jacobsen, Charlotte Perriand, Charles and Ray Eames and Hans Wegner.

Good furniture, be it authentic vintage furniture or new & custom furniture, allows you to comfortably sit and tell your favorite stories. Great furniture tells a story of its own.

On 1stDibs, find everything from sofas to serveware to credenzas to coffee tables, and every other type of antique, vintage and new furniture you need to create a singular space that you’ll be proud to call home.
