Count Gleichen’s Russian shell paperweight, the tooth shaped fragment of a Russian armament shell set above another of rectangular form both raised on a silver mount on an ebonized rectangular plinth, applied with a plaque reading ‘Two fragments of a Russian shell fired at Mr Fred Burne assist.t paymaster and Mr Henry Crave St John midshipman of H.M.S. Cumberland in Aug.t 1854 from Tsee Fort Bonarsund whilst conveying refreshments to the English camp – for their messmate – H.S.H. Prince Victor of Hohenlohe Midshipman landed with the Naval Brigade in 1854’. With a framed caricature of Count Gleichen inscribed Vanity Fair, London, July 5, 1884. The print has the following biography on the reverse and on the mount ‘His Serene Highness Prince Victor …. of Hohenlohe-Langenburg, is better known in England as Count Gleichen and as the Queen’s nephew. Born fifty years ago, he was sent to school at Dresden; but at the age of fourteen he conceived ideas not to be bounded within the confines of the small life of a German principality. So he ran away from school to go to sea, and his aunt the Queen of England, being informed of the fact, proposed to her sister to let her adventurous nephew become naturalised as an Englishman and enter the English Navy. This was accordingly done, and Prince Victor, as he was then called, was appointed to the Powerful on the Mediterranean Station, in 1848. He served in the Crimean War and in the operations in China he proved a popular officer and a good sailor-man, and was three times wounded in battle. In 1861 he married the daughter of Admiral Sir George Seymour, sister of the fifth Marquis of Hertford on which occasion it was that he put down his title of Prince and took up for future use that of Count. He became, in due course a Vice-Admiral, and in the meantime he also became a sculptor. It is in the latter art that he now mainly busies himself, and he has created many pleasing busts of his royal relatives and some works of greater pretensions than family portraits. Rare Garniture of George III Baskets, London, 1778, Philip Freeman

This extremely rare and fine garniture of George III neo classical baskets were made in London in 1778 by Philip Freeman. The Baskets all stand on a square pedestal foot which is pierced with horizontal pails and roundels, as well as being engraved with prick dot designs. The Classical vase shaped main bodies are also pierced with horizontal pails and roundels and the front of each piece displays a disc cartouche engraved with a contemporary Crest. The rim and swing handle, instead of being decorated with beading, are unusually engraved with various prick dot and bright cut bands, including stylised flower heads. Each basket is in excellent condition, has a blue glass liner and is fully marked in the foot.
The baskets are of a very rare decorative design and Philip Freeman was known for producing unusual baskets and pails, although his work does not survive in great quantity. These are also unusual in that they stand on a pierced foot, echoing the designs on the main body. The smaller baskets would have been used for cream and the larger ones for sugar, however it is extremely rare to find a garniture. They are almost always found singly or in pairs, in sizes. A very rare Classical garniture of outstanding quality.

The upper and lower portions of this piece are embellished with embossed and chased bead and scroll decoration accenting concave bordered, fluted decoration all in a spiral design.
The sugar caster retains the original hallmarked screw fit cover, embellished with pierced decoration incorporating chased and embossed bead and scroll decoration, the screw fit attachment indicates the fine quality of this piece.

This exceptional antique Georgian sterling silver candle snuffer tray has a navette shaped form.
The surface of this antique silver snuffer/pen tray is ornamented with a contemporary bright cut engraved crest depicting a centaur regardant holding and arrow on a bended bow, above the bright cut engraved initials 'WIL'.
The outer circumference of the surface is encompassed with an undulating wriggle work decorated border.
The raised rounded sides of the tray are embellished with pierced decorated urn designs conjoined by suspended bright cut engraved festoon ornamentation further accented with undulating pin struck decoration.
The tray is further embellished with an applied bead decorated border to the rim.
Either end of the tray incorporates an impressive pierced and applied scrolling leaf decorated handle accented with a pendant drop design to the inner surface.
This exceptional tray was crafted by the London silversmith William Plummer who is known for his work with pierced decoration.
The centaur in this stance is also a depiction of Sagittarius (otherwise known as Arcitenens), one of the twelve signs of the Zodiac.

The body of this silver tea caddy box is embellished with bands of bright cut engraved volute spiraling leaf ornamentation on a matte background to the upper and lower portions; these bands flank a plain undulating bordered panel.
The ornamentation to the surface of the caddy alternates with panels of concave vertical fluted decoration.
This antique Georgian tea caddy is retains the original hallmarked flush hinged covers; the flush hinge indicates the fine quality of this piece.
The cover is embellished with further bright cut engraved undulating borders accented with bud motifs, in addition to simplified borders paralleling the domed paneled portion; the domed portions reflects the incurved shape of the body.

An exceptional, fine and impressive antique Victorian sterling silver gilt goblet; an addition to our wine and drinks related silverware collection.
This exceptional antique Victorian sterling silver gilt goblet has a circular bulbous-shaped form onto a swept pedestal and circular spreading foot.
The body of this impressive antique silver goblet is encompassed with a central band of chased and engraved scrolling foliate and floral decoration, incorporating swan and vase ornamentation, all on a matte background.
The decoration to the body incorporates an impressive cartouche displaying the contemporary bright cut engraved crest depicting between two arms embowed a sun in splendour.
The cylindrical upper rim is encompassed with further scrolling leaf decoration, flanked with an applied dart decorated border to the nadir and a moulded border to the rim.
The cast silver waisted pedestal features a spiralling bead design, incorporating scrolling motifs to the upper portion, replicating the details of an architectural column.
The circular spreading foot is embellished with impressive cast figural mask designs alternating with layered leaf motifs, all ornamented with further bead decoration.
The swept rim of the slightly weighted base is further ornamented with a leaf decorated festoon.
This sterling silver goblet retains the original gilding; the gilding to the exterior of the goblet has worn with age in a sympathetic fashion.
This exceptional goblet, crafted by the renowned silversmith Frederick Elkington of Elkington & Co, is the finest of its type you could hope to acquire.

Tapio Wirkkala (1915-1985) can be described as one of the icons of Finnish design and a symbol of the international success of post-war Finnish design. Tapio Wirkkala studied sculpture at the Helsinki Central School of Industrial Design from 1933 until 1936, but he was also a self-studied artist in many areas, including glass design. His success as a glass artist began in 1946 when he designed one of his most famous works, the Kantarelli vase, for Iittala. Wirkkala gained worldwide success in 1951 at the Milan Triennial, where he received three Grand Prix awards: for the exhibition architecture, glass design and wooden sculptures. Tapio Wirkkala felt a deep relationship with nature and his absolute favourite spot was located in Finland's deepest forests. From the beautiful landscape, Tapio Wirkkala could find inspiration for his works, often characterised by organic shapes. Leaves, birds, ice and water are recurring themes in his design.
Tapio Wirkkala was also a furniture designer and a sculptor. He started his career as a sculptor in the 1930s but abandoned the traditional sculpture in the post-war years – in the early 1950s, alongside with other works, he started to develop an entirely new relationship with sculpture and a new technique to be used. The result was a series of unique plywood sculptures which combined form and movement in the vibrant, densely lineated surface of plywood.
