A rare example of an early-20th century American shop advertising display. In the form of an oversized hand-crafted wooden pen with brass tip. With its original metal fixtures and braided hanging rope still in place. This example is rare not only due to its condition and form but simply because of its size standing 40 inches tall.
The company originated in America from the beginnings during the 1860s when a Mr. Todd and a Mr. Mabie began making pencil cases and pen holders in New York. Later they were joined by the Bard Brothers who made Gold nibs and by 1873 the company of Mabie Todd and Bard were established in New York.

This fine antique Victorian sterling silver vesta case is realistically modelled in the form of a horseshoe.
The surface of the body is embellished with embossed decoration reproducing the details of the horseshoe accented with bands of bright cut engraved undulating decoration.
This fine Vesta case is fitted with a functional revolving rowel enhanced spur wheel striker to one side.

This remarkable and very finely carved study of the biblical figure of St Paul, The Apostle who was originally Saul of Tarsus born BCE. Tarsus in Cilicia (now in Turkey). He died circa 62 – 64 CE in Rome, Italy. He was one of the leaders of the first generation Christians and was often considered to be the most important person after Jesus in the history of Christianity. This highly accomplished wood carving is a difficult material for detailing English oak. It shows him standing barefoot and dressed in simple robes with a sword in one hand and a scroll in the other. The piano cheek features a carved, Classical meander and acanthus in high relief. The two-pedal piano lyre features carved inverted fish, c-scrolls and a central cartouche. At the 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, there were several manufacturer's competitions, including a piano competition.
