Pair Gothic Revival Medieval Style, Wrought Iron & Cathedral Glass Wall Lanterns
Located in Lisse, NL
All handcrafted, Gothic style pentagonal wall lights with brackets. This early 20th century pair of marked brackets with pentagonal lanterns is all handcrafted, completely original and in very good condition. The natural wear has made this Medieval Style pair of light fixtures look even more ancient and authentic. Since finding Gothic fixtures of this quality and originality is getting ever harder, we were over the moon to find a pair that is this good. The trefoil style elements at the top of each of the Gothic church window-like sides and all of the original rivets are just some of the wonderful features that too make these works of lighting art so authentic and desirable. These lights even come with the original cathedral glass...

Located in Bishop's Stortford, Hertfordshire
A exceptional and stunning early Art Deco Austrian green onyx ashtray mounted with two cold painted bronze kingfishers attributed to Franz Xaver Bergmann (Austrian, 1861-1936) and dating from around 1920. The foundry was inherited from his father, by the same name, who set up a smaller foundry in 1860 but opened a new larger foundry in 1900. There were around fifty similar workshops producing Vienna bronzes making attribution difficult. The green onyx ashtray is of polished round shape with a raised rounded rim and with two cigarette/cigar cut...

Max Le Verrier Art Deco Bronze BasketBall Player Sports Sculpture
Located in Atlanta, GA
Lovely Art Deco bronze sculpture by French artist Max le Verrier (1891 - 1973). Very interesting sports memorabilia with a basketball player in action. Dark green patina to the statuette. The base is in black marble. Incised signature on the black marble base reads M. Le Verrier. Measurements: Overall is 3.94 in. wide (10 cm) x 3.94 in. deep (10 cm) x 11 in. high (28 cm) The base is 3.94 in. wide (10 cm) x 3.94 in. deep (10 cm) x 0.82 in. high (2 cm). The Bronze sculpture alone is 3.13 in. wide (8 cm) x 2 in. deep (5 cm) x 10 in. high (25.5 cm). About the artist: Frits Rudolf Alexander Van Eeden was born in March 1944 in Tilburg, evolved into an internationally recognized artist. Attendance in "De Vrije School" in The Hague stimulated his creative mind, interest, and ability in the Arts. His early interest was promoted by private teachers such as Ed Stralitski, Theo Bitter, Wim Beuning, Bram Roth, Derk Bus, and Jan Goeting. All renowned artist members of the "Pulchri Studio", home of the famous "Hague School". After studying at the "Rietveld Acadamy" under Ben Guntenaar (Sculptor), Van Eeden was offered membership to the "Pulchri Studio" where he pursued sculpting and painting. He was the first member to be admitted in more than one discipline, which shows in the "3-D" quality of his paintings. After participating in shows at the "Pulchri Studio", he participated in group and one-man show throughout Europe and Asia. The Ministry of Culture, Recreation, and Social Works (CRM) provided Van Eeden with a Stipendium to study the work of Henry Moore, the dream of most young sculptors. This influence prevails to this day. A trip to the United States availed Van Eeden, the opportunity to see the work of students at Harvard, where he found that their work was similar to that of Academy-level in Europe. After this experience, he made his semi-annual visit to Florida, wherein 1979 he entered a juried competition at the Artist Forum of the Brevard Art Center and Museum of Melbourne. His work, two life-size sculptures of horses, won best-in-show. The award is a "One-Man-Show" at the museum, only the second time such honor has been awarded. Under a grant from The State of Florida, Van Eeden was given the position of Artist-in-Residence at the museum and served on-and-off as a major instructor for 30 years. Frits Van Eeden...

Antique and Vintage Collectibles and Curiosities for Sale

Antique and vintage collectibles and curiosities can bring whimsy and wonder to any interior.

Decorating with old scientific instruments, historical memorabilia and vintage musical instruments, as well as other authentic collectibles and curiosities that can be found on 1stDibs, presents an opportunity to create a unique, natural history museum-like atmosphere in your home that can provoke conversation as often as it pays tribute to how far we’ve come in understanding our world.

And bringing collectibles and curiosities into your space is actually on trend — Wunderkammern, or curiosity cabinets, were all the rage in Europe during the 1500s and continued to have adherents there and in the U.S. in the following centuries. Today, however, they’re experiencing a real surge in popularity and influencing how many interior designers are furnishing and decorating homes — combining contemporary with antique, scientific with tribal, earthly with extraterrestrial, Les Lalanne tables with Flemish tapestries.

The original Wunderkammern were entire rooms filled with objects demonstrating their owners’ worldly knowledge: A proper one included artificiala or preciosa (objets d’art); naturalia (such as skeletons, shells, minerals); exotica (taxidermy or dried plants); and scientifica (scientific instruments), frequently alongside religious relics and ancient artifacts.

Pay tribute to a history of rich and diverse musical traditions that have taken shape all over the world by decorating your home with a collection of antique and vintage musical instruments — with a little help from strong hanging wire or some wall hooks, vintage brass instruments such as a gong, French horn or trumpet can help elevate a home office or complement the efforts you’ve made to ensure a welcoming vibe in your home’s entryway. Bells or antique wind instruments can add provocative metallic contrasts to dark woods as tabletop decorative objects.

Create an intriguing focal point with Georgian scientific instruments, such as stick barometers with mahogany cases or lacquered brass telescopes. These items stem from an era named for the monarchies of the four King Georges, who ruled England in succession starting in 1714 (plus King William’s reign, which lasted until 1837). Just as there was beautiful jewelry produced during the period that today is coveted by collectors, there is much to be found in the collectibles and curiosities realm too.

Wanderlust, nostalgia and a shared love of good design are contributing factors to certain trends in decorating — just as vintage trunks and luggage have reappeared as furniture or home accents in a bedroom or foyer, decorating with globes, maps or nautical objects is similarly rooted in the allure of travel and a penchant for the stylish finishing touch that collectibles bring to our homes.

Find a wide range of antique and vintage collectibles and curiosities on 1stDibs.
