Oversized Abstract Moroccan Rug, Bohemian Rhapsody Meets Expressionist Style
By Gerhard Richter, Berber Tribes of Morocco, Sol LeWitt
Located in Dallas, TX
21121 Oversized Abstract Moroccan Rug 15'03 x 17'00. Abstract Expressionist style meets Bohemian Rhapsody in this hand knotted wool oversized Moroccan rug. The visual complexity and intense earthy colors woven into this piece work together creating a bold, expressive design. Flowing organic lines bands run down the center and across the top forming a t-shape. Short horizontal bands dash across the width interrupting the continuity. Imbued with ethereal hues and rich waves of abrash, the gradated striations give the piece a painterly quality reminiscent of watercolors and gouaches. Reflecting elements of Abstract Expressionism and a bold art form, this authentic Berber carpet draws inspiration from Ian Davenport, Sol LeWitt, and Gerhard Richter. It is truly 'Art You Can Walk On'! Perfect for adding organic textile sensations to living room, family room, bedroom, home office, large library or study, studio, game room, billiards room, playroom, children's area, home theater, large entertaining space, hotel lobby, or a lounge area. Oversized Vintage Rabat Moroccan Rug, Hotel Lobby Size Carpet
By Rabat Village Women
Located in Dallas, TX
77201 Oversized Vintage Moroccan Rug, 13'10 x 18'07. Representing an exclusive category of Moroccan carpets and a sign of wealth, this palatial Rabat Moroccan rug is a captivating vision of woven beauty. The detailed tribal design and vibrant colorway woven into this piece work together to. Clevery composed and colorfully curated, this oversized vintage Moroccan rug features six superimposed stepped diamond-shaped medallions in bright lime, sunflower yellow and tomato red spread across a creamy-biege field. A variety of ambiguous tribal symbols decorate the field between the medallions, including combs and burdocks. Combs and darts grace the corner spandrels, while stepped hexagons with diamond centers line the edges. The attractive border echoes the graphic designs of the central area and features fetter motifs in alternating colors separated by thin bars with diamond end-caps. Fetters traditionally symbolize family union, while combs, diamonds, and burdocks are seen to protect against evil. Not exactly subtle but enough to make a statement, this colorful Moroccan rug is charming and fun. Unlike most other Moroccan rugs, Rabat city rugs exhibit Anatolian designs and influence, though it is unclear how these designs came to Morocco many centuries ago. According to Indianapolis Museum of Arts, The Fabric of Moroccan Life, the women weavers of Rabat tell a legend that one day 'a stork dropped into the courtyard of a house a piece of rug- whose colors and design were hitherto unknown in the land- the women weavers of the house saw it as a gift from heaven, a talisman, and a good omen, and so were inspired by it. The people of Rabat consider wool to be as precious as gold and a variety of rituals surround the making of their rugs. They are known to be able to create bright and saturated polychromatic color schemes with a narrow palette. Perfect for a large entertaining space, hotel lobby, lounge area, drawing room, country club, academic library, golf locker room, trophy room, private Chambers, great room, wine cellar, executive suite, conservatory, state room, royal suite, billiards room, owners retreat, dining room, living room, or formal sitting room. Rustic yet refined, this oversized Moroccan rug would complement mountain living for luxury ski chalets, secluded hunting lodges and rustic ranches found in Montana, Colorado, Lake Tahoe, Wyoming, or the Adirondacks. Rendered in variegated shades of beige, red, blue, green, amethyst, and yellow with other accent colors. Tag on the back reads: Morocco, Rabat. Abrash. Made by the Rabat Village Women. Made in Morocco. Measures: 13'10 x 18'07. Hotel Lobby Size Carpet 14 x 19 Rug...

Mid-Century Modern Furniture Finds: Shop Vintage and Antique Moroccan Rugs on 1stDibs

Antique and vintage Moroccan rugs serve as an exceptional piece of decor. Whether it’s to tie your bedroom together or to add a dazzling array of colors and graphically provocative shapes and other elements to your living room wall, there’s increased demand for all types of Moroccan tribal rugs, especially as bohemian, global and eco styles are on the rise and because tapestries and wall hangings are definitely cool again.

Travelers and interior design lovers from all over the world are big fans of the complex geometric patterns and bold color palettes that we typically associate with rustic, natural Moroccan and North African rugs.

In the West, the current infatuation with handwoven vintage Moroccan tribal rugs stretches to the mid-20th century. Then, designers such as Alvar Aalto, Frank Lloyd Wright and Le Corbusier offset austere interiors with vibrant and alluring mid-century modern Moroccan rugs. (Le Corbusier integrated these rugs in his designs for Villa La Roche in Paris, while Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater in Pennsylvania is also home to distinctive Moroccan floor coverings.)

Moroccan rugs date back to the Paleolithic era, when Berber tribes, which comprised many different members of an ethnic group native to North Africa, would weave these textiles with intricate images and symbols. Traditionally, Moroccan tribal weavings were made exclusively by women and solely for personal use. Dense pile rugs served not only as floor coverings but as mattresses, seating and even blankets in the winter months.

The Moroccan rug hasn’t survived this long merely because of its usefulness. These stunning works take at least two to three weeks to weave, and each woman weaves the story of her life into the design. They are filled with symbolism and vary greatly depending on the locale where they were woven. In this way, part of the profound beauty of traditional Moroccan rugs lies in their historical and cultural significance.

One of the most widely loved styles of Moroccan rugs comes from the Beni Ourain tribes, a network of nearly two dozen individual tribes in the mountainous Middle Atlas region.

Vintage Beni Ourain rugs are woven from undyed, natural wool. The textures, imperfections and asymmetrical lines, which can’t be reproduced with mass production methods, as well as the neutral tones and understated geometry have endeared interior designers to these works for ages. In comparison to the spare Beni Ourain rugs, a more heavily decorated, widely colorful option can be found in Azilal Moroccan rugs, which contrast wonderfully with the rich, dark wood tones and clean lines that characterize mid-century modern furniture.

The collection of antique and vintage rugs and carpets on 1stDibs features a wide range of extraordinary Moroccan and North African rugs including Beni Ourain rugs, Azilal rugs, kilims and more.
