Modern Prints
MODERN STYLE
The late 19th and early 20th centuries saw sweeping social change and major scientific advances — both of which contributed to a new aesthetic: modernism. Rejecting the rigidity of Victorian artistic conventions, modernists sought a new means of expression. References to the natural world and ornate classical embellishments gave way to the sleek simplicity of the Machine Age. Architect Philip Johnson characterized the hallmarks of modernism as “machine-like simplicity, smoothness or surface [and] avoidance of ornament.”
Early practitioners of modernist design include the De Stijl (“The Style”) group, founded in the Netherlands in 1917, and the Bauhaus School, founded two years later in Germany.
Followers of both groups produced sleek, spare designs — many of which became icons of daily life in the 20th century. The modernists rejected both natural and historical references and relied primarily on industrial materials such as metal, glass, plywood, and, later, plastics. While Bauhaus principals Marcel Breuer and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe created furniture from mass-produced, chrome-plated steel, American visionaries like Charles and Ray Eames worked in materials as novel as molded plywood and fiberglass. Today, Breuer’s Wassily chair, Mies van der Rohe’s Barcelona chair — crafted with his romantic partner, designer Lilly Reich — and the Eames lounge chair are emblems of progressive design and vintage originals are prized cornerstones of collections.
It’s difficult to overstate the influence that modernism continues to wield over designers and architects — and equally difficult to overstate how revolutionary it was when it first appeared a century ago. But because modernist furniture designs are so simple, they can blend in seamlessly with just about any type of décor. Don’t overlook them.

Shortly before the Wall was built in 1961, Büttner moved with his parents from the GDR to Munich. Moved to Berlin in 1968 and studied law at the Freie Universität Berlin from 1973 to 1977. After his studies he worked as a social worker in the Tegel prison. He was a co-founder of several humorously titled organizations such as the "Dum-Dum-Liga-Journal", setting up a seed bank for GDR refugees. The 1991 PGA Championship was the 73rd PGA Championship, held August 8–11 at Crooked Stick Golf Club in Carmel, Indiana, a suburb north of Indianapolis. John Daly won the first of his two major titles, three strokes ahead of runner-up Bruce Lietzke.
Daly, age 25, was quite arguably the most unforeseen major champion in modern history. He was the ninth alternate who only qualified after several others pulled out of the tournament. Nick Price withdrew for the birth of his first child and Daly hired his caddy, Jeff "Squeaky" Medlin. Daly's outgoing personality and "grip it and rip it" style of play made him an instant fan favorite. The PGA Championship was his first tour victory.
This wonderfully collectible lithograph would make a great gift.
Donald Voorhees has been recognized from coast to coast for his outstanding contribution to art and is the recipient of over 100 awards from such prestigious organizations as the Hudson Valley Art Association, the Salmagundi Club of New York City and the New Jersey Water Color Society. He has been cited for his work by the State of New Jersey.
The artist's works have been shown in museums throughout the country, including the Frye Museum, Seattle, Washington; the Edward Dean Museum, Cherry Valley, California; the Central Museum of Wyoming; and the Martello Museum, Key West, Florida. He has exhibited with the American Watercolor Society, Allied Artists, Knickerbocker Artists, New Jersey Water Color Society, Hudson Valley Art Association, Salgamundi Club, National Academy of Design, and the National Art Club.
His works are owned by many banks, corporations and public institutions througout the country including Sun Oil, Gannett Publications, Citibank, Hertz, Pfizer Drug and Bethlehem Steel. Born in Moscow, Lanskoy moved to Paris in 1921 to study at the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere. During this time he also studied under Sergei Jur'evic Sudejkin.
