Yannima Tommy Watson is a Pitjantjatjara artist born around the 1930s, in the bush some 44km west of the small isolated community of Irrunytju. Not yet very well known to the French public, despite his participation in the architectural project of the Musée du Quai Branly, Tommy Watson is nevertheless often considered the greatest living Aboriginal artist. Like many aborigines of his generation, he lived a traditional, nomadic or semi-nomadic life before his contact with Western civilization; then he will occupy the only jobs that the Aborigines find: herdsmen (until Yuendumu), laborers for the construction of infrastructures in the desert. Throughout this period he became familiar with his "country", a harsh region, and deepened his knowledge, both profane and sacred, relating to Dreams and Dreamtimes, to the connections between sacred sites and the Ancestors. He will even work in Papunya, where the artistic movement started. But the Pijantjarra are intransigent with tradition…no question at this time of revealing the motives and the secret stories. The North of South Australia, the region where he is from, was touched by the pictorial movement only at the very beginning of the 2000s. In 2001, Tommy began his career as an artist in Irrunytju (Wingellina). This artwork, titled "Ceremonial Landscape" c.1980 is an etching with embossing on Arches paper by noted Canadian artist Janet Jones b.1952. It is hand signed and titled in pencil by the artist. It is numbered “21/30 e.v.”. The meaning of e.v. is “edition varied.” It indicates the artist varied the ink or paper or some other aspect of the printing process to create more than one image. The image is 18 x 15 inches, sheet size is 30 x 22.25 inches. It is in excellent condition, and has never been framed. About the artist: Janet Jones was born in Montreal, Quebec in 1952. She received her BFA in painting and photography from Concordia University - studying painting with Guido Molinari and Yves Gaucher, and photography with the experimental photographer Suzanne Swibold. Janet Jones is currently a Toronto based painter whose work has been exhibited across Canada, in Los Angeles, New York, England, Germany, France and China. Her recent projects include; the solo exhibition, The Dream Machine at Patrick Mikhail Gallery, Montréal (2017), two solo exhibitions, Playtimes (2015) and Joyride (2012) both at Katzman Contemporary Toronto, a national touring exhibition of her paintings, DaDa Delirium, with an accompanying catalogue (2011) with essays by Stuart Reid, Nell Tenhaaf and an interview with the artist by Georgiana Uhlyarik, and participation in the Empire of Dreams exhibition, MOCCA (Summer 2010) curated by David Liss. Jones has been a visiting artist in France, England, Russia, China, the Netherlands, and Cuba. Jones received her MFA from York University and her PhD from New York University in the area of art theory and criticism. Her dissertation titled: Clement Greenberg and the Artist /Critic Relationship, included interviews with Clement Greenberg, Jules Olitski, and other members of the ‘Greenberg Group’ and research gained through accompanying Greenberg on numerous studio visits. "Many of the most common flowers sold in flower shops around the world are grown in equatorial countries. Unfortunately, many of these countries have loose to no regulations on the synthetic pesticides and fertilizers used to grow the flowers. These pesticides and fertilizers find their way into waterways, and rivers and eventually make their way into our oceans, causing environmental havoc along the way. Fertilizer runoff can trigger sudden explosions of marine algae capable of disrupting ocean ecosystems and even producing "dead zones" in the sea. Pesticides can affect coral reproduction, growth, and other physiological processes. Herbicides, in particular, can affect the symbiotic algae (plants). This can damage their partnership with coral and result in bleaching. This image contemplates the connection between the flowers we buy, and the effect commercial flowers have on the majestic and fragile reef systems around the world. In keeping with one of PangeaSeed Foundation’s mottos, “As Above, So Below”, this image imagines Clownfish, an iconic reef dweller living within the flowers we consume. Their home is being threatened and altered by pesticide runoff, pictured here as a band of bleached out flowers. You can make a difference by the choices you make on a daily basis.
