Fruitful (small) - Contemporary art, 21st Century, YBAs, Colorful, Giclée Print
Located in Zug, CH
Fruitful (small) - Damien Hirst, Contemporary Art, 21st Century, YBAs, Colorful, Giclée Print, Brush Stokes, Paint, Glossy, Limited Edition Laminated Giclée print on aluminium composite panel Edition of 3308 39 x 39 cm (15.4 x 15.4 in.) Signed and numbered on label on the verso In mint condition, as acquired from the publisher and in the original packaging With Certificate of Authenticity PLEASE NOTE: Edition numbers could vary from the one shown in the images. This edition of Forever features bright, abstract details from Damien Hirst’s new series of paintings titled Cherry Blossoms. Here, Hirst reinterprets the traditional subject of landscape painting on a monumental scale, entirely covering the surface of the works with bright colours that stretch the boundaries between figuration and abstraction. The vibrant works pay homage to the Pointillism and Impressionism art movements. With the Cherry Blossoms series Hirst bridges his explorations and examination of colour as well as its effect on the eye, where movement and dynamicity of colour have been composed freely and joyously by the British artist. “The Cherry Blossoms are about beauty and life and death. They’re garish and messy and fragile and about me moving away from Minimalism and the idea of an imaginary mechanical painter and that’s so exciting to me.” —Damien Hirst This limited fine art edition is technically created by a bright Laminated Giclée print on aluminium composite panel, comes in two sizes and was realized in collaboration with Fondazione Prada to support Save the Children Italia. Hirst has taken existing imagery from his Cherry Blossoms and transposed it into a print, depicting a close up of the densely layered impasto structure, as well as colourful dabs of paint from sections of the large-scale canvases, one can see Hirst's thick brushstrokes and trace the movement of his gestural action painting through the surface. DAMIEN HIRST The Turner prize winner and epicenter of the YBA movement. Hirst's emblematic art of our era revolutionizes the art market. Hirst is widely regarded as one of the most important artists working today, creating truly iconic artworks. A genuine star of the Young British Artists (YBA) movement, Damien Hirst has always made a point of mixing up different media. Whether as a sculptor, an installation artist, a painter, or a printmaker, Hirst has produced many of the most spectacular and widely discussed works in recent years and helped to revolutionize the art market. Damien Hirst’s, For the Love of God, the diamond-encrusted replica of the skull of a thirty-five-year-old man from the thirteenth century, broke all records to become the most expensive contemporary artwork in the world. Damien Hirst´s artworks are truly emblematic icons of our era, with their recurring motives such as dots, butterflies, cows, sharks, skulls, pills, and pharmacy cabinets. “I do believe art is more powerful than money, though. I still believe that. And if I ever find out money's more important, I'll knock it on the head.”—Damien Hirst His works, captivating and intense as they are, challenge our stereotyped concepts and beliefs. Damien Hirst’s shark...

"Arabian Dressage" (double face) Painting 14" x 18" inch (1956) by Ragheb Ayad
Located in Culver City, CA
"Arabian Dressage" (double face) Painting 14" x 18" inch (1956) by Ragheb Ayad signed & dated Ink on Paper Ragheb Ayad was born in Cairo on the 10th of March 1892 and inscribed himself in the School of Fine Arts since its opening in 1908. After graduation, he taught art in the high Coptic school and made several trips on his own to France and Italy to complete his artistic education. He was the first to obtain a governmental scholarship to Rome, where he stayed for five years studying art at the Superior Institute of Fine Arts. Since his return to Cairo in 1930, he was assigned as director of the decorative section of the Faculty of Applied Arts. In 1937, he was named professor at the Faculty of Fine Arts and director of its free section. He was in charge of reorganizing the Coptic museum, and since 1950 became head of the Museum of Modern Art, where he made a special section in it for the great sculpture Mahmoud Mokhtar. Since 1924 and for half a century, he participated in most of the exhibitions of the ‘Cairo Salon’ plus organizing 40 solo exhibitions. Ragheb Ayad is considered one of the pioneers of Egyptian art in the 20th century alongside Mahmoud Mokhtar, Youssef Kamel, Mohamed Hassan, Mahmoud Said, and Mohamed Naghy. Ragheb Ayad is the first to get rid of the western influences and to create Egyptian art with its own solid identity. For the rest of his life, Ragheb Ayad was dedicated to the popular themes of Egyptian life, whether it is the cosmopolitan Cairo or the upper Egyptian villages and the small towns. He visited all these places, recording the pulsating life of the soaks, the moulids, the cafes, and the men and women dancers. Ragheb Ayad remained forever the painter of this true Egyptian universe. Ragheb Ayad is considered to be the first expressionistic painter who influenced the second and third generation of artists. Aside from the popular Ayad was attracted to the religious themes where he portrayed the flight of the holly family in Egypt and the birth of Jesus. Moreover, Ayad is known to be the first Egyptian artist to be influenced by ancient Egyptian art...

Charcoal on paper, 56cm x 38cm, (79cm x 60cm framed). Provenance: The Artist’s sister. From the mid-1940s to the early 1950s Colquhoun was considered one of the leading artists of his generation. Along with that of Robert MacBryde, another artist and Colquhoun’s partner, his work was regularly shown at the Lefevre Gallery in London. This early work is likely to be a drawing from when Colquhoun was at the Glasgow School of Art in the 1930s. Known as the ‘Two Roberts’, Colquhoun and MacBryde met at the Glasgow School of Art in 1932 and lived together until Colquhoun’s death in 1962. The pair also exhibited in several group shows at the Lefevre Gallery, including one in February 1946, alongside Ben Nicholson, Graham Sutherland, Bacon and Freud. Works were bought by the Arts Council, the British Council, the Contemporary Art Society and the Imperial War Museum. Major art patrons added their work to their collections, including Sir Kenneth Clark...

Unique Framed Signed and dated on verso This photograph is part of the MoMA permanent collection. René Groebli (born in Zurich, Switzerland in 1927) secured his place among the elite of Swiss post-war photographers with his 1949 portfolio MAGIE DER SCHIENE (RAIL MAGIC). In the early fifties Groebli worked as reporter for Life, Picture Post and other international magazines. During the following years he owned a studio for industrial and advertising photography. In 1957 the American Color Annual named him MASTER OF COLOR. In the early 80s Groebli stopped working for advertising and rediscovered for himself the possibilities of expression that black & white photography offers. In 1999 the Zurich Kunsthaus (Art Museum) showed a representative selection of his photographs from the years 1946 to 1996. With NUDES René Groebli gives us a work for sensuous pleasure that had grown over half a century. Marilyn Monroe
Located in Palm Desert, CA
A photograph by Lawrence Schiller. ""Marilyn Monroe"" is a nude, figurative vintage silver gelatin photograph in black and white by American Post-War artist Lawrence Schiller. Lawrence Schiller only remembers the 60s in this way: Fast. As in: Blur. Which is, for those who lived through it, as accurate a description as one is likely to find about the decade that began with optimism and ended in chaos. It was ten years of turmoil and exploration. And through this turbulent and tumultuous decade, it often seemed that whenever a headline-making news event occurred, Lawrence Schiller was there. Schiller was not just lucky to be in the right place at the right time; he was prescient. He was there to cover the event, to add to it, to help us see it, to aid its meaning and its depth. ""It was a time in which things happened awfully fast,"" Schiller says of the decade. ""It was a wild, wild period; an uncontrolled period. I don’t think you had any sense of perspective in the 60s. You had to wait and look back at it, because it was a period in which things were happening that had no rhyme or reason to it. But by the end of the ‘60s I had covered so many stories, had so many magazine covers, I had somehow become part of that decade’s history. And I already had my eye on the future."" When Lawrence Schiller got the assignment from the French magazine, Paris Match to photograph Marilyn Monroe on the 20th Century Fox set of Something’s Got to Give, he thought nothing of it. It wasn’t to be a private, studio shoot. He wasn’t going to set up lights, create backgrounds, or use a tripod. Just another assignment, he figured. Monroe by then was firmly established as a figment in the imagination of most young men. The orphan Norma Jean had recreated herself as the blonde bombshell Marilyn Monroe. She’d appeared in twenty-nine films by the time Schiller photographed her in black and white and color in May, 1962. The world was unprepared for the moment when Marilyn jumped in the swimming pool in a flesh-colored bikini and came up out of the water au natural. She was all smiles and in her element: the sex goddess...

Of Galician roots, the data on the birth of José Palmeiro remain imprecise: although those stated here are those generally accepted, there are certain sources that affirm that he was born in 1901 and that he is a native of Betanzos (Galicia). At the age of 18, he worked in the workshops of the newspaper El Sol where his drawings were published. José Palmeiro arrived in Paris in 1925 where he settled in the Montparnasse neighborhood. He became friends with Celso Lagary and is part of the group of Spanish painters from the School of Paris. He also established friendships with Ginés Parra...

Barbra Streisand (fur hat)
Located in Palm Desert, CA
A photograph by Lawrence Schiller. “Barbra Streisand (fur hat)” is a figurative photograph, vintage silver gelatin photograph in black and white by American artist Lawrence Schiller. The artwork is signed on the verso. "It was a time in which things happened awfully fast," Schiller says of the decade. "It was a wild, wild period; an uncontrolled period. And I already had my eye on the future." When Lawrence Schiller got the assignment from the French magazine, Paris Match to photograph Marilyn Monroe on the 20th Century Fox set of Something’s Got to Give, he thought nothing of it.

Photography, Drawings, Prints, Sculptures and Paintings for Sale

Whether growing your current fine art collection or taking the first steps on that journey, you will find an extensive range of original photography, drawings, prints, sculptures, paintings and more on 1stDibs.

Visual art is among the oldest forms of expression, and it has been evolving for centuries. Beautiful objects can provide a window to the past or insight into our current time. Art collecting enhances daily life through the presence of meaningful work. It displays an appreciation for culture, whether a print by Elizabeth Catlett channeling social change or a narrative quilt by Faith Ringgold.

Contemporary art has lured more initiates to collecting than almost any other category, with notable artists including Yayoi Kusama, Marc Chagall, Kehinde Wiley and Jean-Michel Basquiat. Navigating the waiting lists for the next Marlene Dumas, Jeff Koons or Jasper Johns has become competitive.

When you’re living with art, particularly as people more often work from home and enjoy their spaces, it’s important to choose art that resonates with you. While the richness of art with its many movements, styles and histories can be overwhelming, the key is to identify what is appealing and inspiring. Artwork can play with the surrounding color of a room, creating a layered approach. The dynamic shapes and sizes of sculptures can set different moods, such as a bronze by Miguel Guía on a mantel or an Alexander Calder mobile suspended over a table. A wall of art can evoke emotions in an interior while showing off your tastes and interests. A salon-style wall mixing eclectic pieces like landscape paintings with charcoal drawings is a unique way to transform a space and show off a collection.

For art meditating on the subconscious, investigate Surrealists like Joan Miró and Salvador Dalí. Explore Pop art and its leading artists such as Andy Warhol, Rosalyn Drexler and Keith Haring for bright and bold colors. Not only did these artists question art itself, but also how we perceive society. Similarly, 20th-century photography and abstract painting reconsidered the intent of art.

Abstract Expressionists like Helen Frankenthaler and Lee Krasner and Color Field artists including Sam Gilliam broke from conventional ideas of painting, while Op artists such as Yaacov Agam embraced visual trickery and kinetic movement. Novel visuals are also integral to contemporary work influenced by street art, such as sculptures and prints by KAWS.

Realist portraiture is a global tradition reflecting on what makes us human. This is reflected in the work of Slim Aarons, an American photographer whose images are at once candid and polished and appeared in Holiday magazine and elsewhere. Innovative artists Mickalene Thomas and Kerry James Marshall are now offering new perspectives on the form.

Collecting art is a rewarding, lifelong pursuit that can help connect you with the creative ways historic, modern and contemporary artists have engaged with the world. For more tips on piecing together an art collection, see our guide to buying and displaying art.
