About the Item

David B. Smith Gallery is pleased to present Somewhere in the Future I am Remembering Today, a solo exhibition by Louisville, Kentucky – based artist Letitia Quesenberry. In her inaugural exhibition with the gallery, Quesenberry’s visually stunning, labor intensive works feature a wide range of media. From hypnotic pulsing light boxes to tinted resin wall works inspired by SX70 Polaroid film, dazzling colors, pattern, and symbol take on mesmeric qualities. Adept in the language of abstraction, Quesenberry seeks to activate the boundaries of optical experience through both visual and immaterial means. Inspiration comes from an ongoing pursuit of the limitations of memory, where elements of ecstatic unpredictability are captured under layers of resins and plexiglass. Activated by LEDs that continuously advance and recede in an endless game of hide and seek, unpredictability collides with material limitations. A visual treat flipping between candy colored light boxes and subdued pastel wall sculptures, Somewhere in the Future I am Remembering Today, offers a vacation into the caverns of one’s own subconscious. Silent yet moving, present yet veiled, Letitia Quesenberry’s sumptuous respite from the everyday creates what she calls, “an imagined architecture for ephemerality, desire, loss.” Though specific subject matter is absent, works possess an experiential quality, where wisps of memories are seemingly transferred from maker to viewer, slyly moving between pulses of light like a phantom daydream leaving one host for the next.
