At 1stDibs, there are many versions of the ideal 1970s designer sofa for your home. Frequently made of fabric, upholstery and animal skin, every 1970s designer sofa was constructed with great care. Your living room may not be complete without a 1970s designer sofa — find older editions for sale from the 20th Century and newer versions made as recently as the 20th Century. A 1970s designer sofa, designed in the Mid-Century Modern or Modern style, is generally a popular piece of furniture. Many designers have produced at least one well-made 1970s designer sofa over the years, but those crafted by Cassina, Vico Magistretti and David Edward are often thought to be among the most beautiful.

How Much is a 1970s Designer Sofa?

The average selling price for a 1970s designer sofa at 1stDibs is $4,795, while they’re typically $945 on the low end and $23,000 for the highest priced.

Finding the Right seating for You

With entire areas of our homes reserved for “sitting rooms,” the value of quality antique and vintage seating cannot be overstated.

Fortunately, the design of side chairs, armchairs and other lounge furniture — since what were, quite literally, the early perches of our ancestors — has evolved considerably.

Among the earliest standard seating furniture were stools. Egyptian stools, for example, designed for one person with no seat back, were x-shaped and typically folded to be tucked away. These rudimentary chairs informed the design of Greek and Roman stools, all of which were a long way from Sori Yanagi's Butterfly stool or Alvar Aalto's Stool 60. In the 18th century and earlier, seats with backs and armrests were largely reserved for high nobility.

The seating of today is more inclusive but the style and placement of chairs can still make a statement. Antique desk chairs and armchairs designed in the style of Louis XV, which eventually included painted furniture and were often made of rare woods, feature prominently curved legs as well as Chinese themes and varied ornaments. Much like the thrones of fairy tales and the regency, elegant lounges crafted in the Louis XV style convey wealth and prestige. In the kitchen, the dining chair placed at the head of the table is typically reserved for the head of the household or a revered guest.

Of course, with luxurious vintage or antique furnishings, every chair can seem like the best seat in the house. Whether your preference is stretching out on a plush sofa, such as the Serpentine, designed by Vladimir Kagan, or cozying up in a vintage wingback chair, there is likely to be a comfy classic or contemporary gem for you on 1stDibs.

With respect to the latest obsessions in design, cane seating has been cropping up everywhere, from sleek armchairs to lounge chairs, while bouclé fabric, a staple of modern furniture design, can be seen in mid-century modern, Scandinavian modern and Hollywood Regency furniture styles.

Admirers of the sophisticated craftsmanship and dark woods frequently associated with mid-century modern seating can find timeless furnishings in our expansive collection of lounge chairs, dining chairs and other items — whether they’re vintage editions or alluring official reproductions of iconic designs from the likes of Hans Wegner or from Charles and Ray Eames. Shop our inventory of Egg chairs, designed in 1958 by Arne Jacobsen, the Florence Knoll lounge chair and more.

No matter your style, the collection of unique chairs, sofas and other seating on 1stDibs is surely worthy of a standing ovation.

Questions About 1970s Designer Sofa
  • 1stDibs ExpertMarch 15, 2024
What 1970s furniture is called varies. Generally, you may see pieces produced during the decade classified as "vintage" or "retro" furniture. During the 1970s, some makers continued to produce furniture that boasted the characteristics of mid-century modern works. The disco era yielded furnishings with organic, often rounded shapes, unadorned silhouettes, clean lines and a mix of materials. The showy leather furniture of the 1970s, which was both sexy and comfortable, is seeing a resurgence in today’s homes. Shop a wide variety of vintage 1970s furniture on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 15, 2024
Famous fashion designers in the 1990s include Vivienne Westwood, Miuccia Prada, Jean Paul Gaultier and Thierry Mugler

For collectors and fashion lovers all over the world, ‘90s fashion has become associated with styles adopted by today’s supermodels and influencers, who never wear the same thing twice. And because fast fashion didn’t yet exist, 1990s fashion trends and apparel — vintage '90s clothing, handbags and accessories — have a quality appreciated by the millennial generation: authenticity.

Find 1990s Chanel bags, Moschino pants, Margiela jackets and other vintage garments and accessories on 1stDibs.

Who the most famous fashion designer of the 1960s was is open to debate. Many designers helped define the looks of the decade, each influencing style in their own way. Among these notable designers were Mary Quant, André Courrèges, Pierre Cardin, Yves Saint Laurent, Bonnie Cashin, Hubert de Givenchy, Emilio Pucci, Paco Rabanne and Ossie Clark. On 1stDibs, shop a variety of vintage apparel and accessories from the 1960s.
