Antique Posy Ring

The ring is in good condition. Posy rings, so called from the French word for poetry, are often engraved with rhymed mottos.

This posy is found frequently on rings (see Evans, 1931, p. 38).

‘Posy rings’, their name deriving from the term poésie or poetry, are rings with mottoes either in prose or verse.

Bands such as this one are called posy rings because the inscriptions or mottoes are known as “posies,” from the French word for poem – poésie.

The Gothic lettering on the ring is reminiscent of both medieval manuscripts and jewelry, like ring brooches or posy rings with declarations of faith and love, often in combination.
