A Close Look at Mid-Century Modern Furniture
Organically shaped, clean-lined and elegantly simple are three terms that well describe vintage mid-century modern furniture. The style, which emerged primarily in the years following World War II, is characterized by pieces that were conceived and made in an energetic, optimistic spirit by creators who believed that good design was an essential part of good living.

The mid-century modern era saw leagues of postwar American architects and designers animated by new ideas and new technology. The lean, functionalist International-style architecture of Le Corbusier and Bauhaus eminences Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Walter Gropius had been promoted in the United States during the 1930s by Philip Johnson and others. New building techniques, such as “post-and-beam” construction, allowed the International-style schemes to be realized on a small scale in open-plan houses with long walls of glass.
Materials developed for wartime use became available for domestic goods and were incorporated into mid-century modern furniture designs. Charles and Ray Eames and Eero Saarinen, who had experimented extensively with molded plywood, eagerly embraced fiberglass for pieces such as the La Chaise and the Womb chair, respectively.
Architect, writer and designer George Nelson created with his team shades for the Bubble lamp using a new translucent polymer skin and, as design director at Herman Miller, recruited the Eameses, Alexander Girard and others for projects at the legendary Michigan furniture manufacturer.
Harry Bertoia and Isamu Noguchi devised chairs and tables built of wire mesh and wire struts. Materials were repurposed too: The Danish-born designer Jens Risom created a line of chairs using surplus parachute straps for webbed seats and backrests.
The Risom lounge chair was among the first pieces of furniture commissioned and produced by legendary manufacturer Knoll, a chief influencer in the rise of modern design in the United States, thanks to the work of Florence Knoll, the pioneering architect and designer who made the firm a leader in its field. The seating that Knoll created for office spaces — as well as pieces designed by Florence initially for commercial clients — soon became desirable for the home.
As the demand for casual, uncluttered furnishings grew, more mid-century furniture designers caught the spirit.
Classically oriented creators such as Edward Wormley, house designer for Dunbar Inc., offered such pieces as the sinuous Listen to Me chaise; the British expatriate T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings switched gears, creating items such as the tiered, biomorphic Mesa table. There were Young Turks such as Paul McCobb, who designed holistic groups of sleek, blond wood furniture, and Milo Baughman, who espoused a West Coast aesthetic in minimalist teak dining tables and lushly upholstered chairs and sofas with angular steel frames.
As the collection of vintage mid-century modern chairs, dressers, coffee tables and other furniture for the living room, dining room, bedroom and elsewhere on 1stDibs demonstrates, this period saw one of the most delightful and dramatic flowerings of creativity in design history.
Finding the Right abstract-sculptures for You
Abstract sculpture has evolved over time with artists making a variety of striking statements in stone, bronze, ceramic and other materials. In the collection of abstract sculptures on 1stDibs, you are sure to find a piece that is perfect for your space.
When exploring how to arrange furniture and decor, consider color, texture and what kind of energy it should evoke. Abstract sculpture can elevate any home through its many decorative possibilities.
Auguste Rodin is often called the father of modern sculpture for his pioneering naturalistic forms and figures that vividly express emotion. His work in the 19th and early 20th centuries broke with artistic conventions and inspired modernism, leading to a new period of avant-garde abstraction.
Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque were among the first artists to push abstract sculpture into the mainstream. They helped define the Cubism movement, which focused on deconstructing the world abstractly. Other 20th-century artistic movements, including Italian Futurism, Dadaism, Neo-Dadaism, Surrealism, Abstract Expressionism and Minimalism, all contributed to the advancement of abstract sculpture. Italian Futurism, for example, celebrated movement, dynamics and technology in abstract sculpture. These movements continue to inform abstract sculpture today.
With abstract art — sculpture, painting or a grouping of prints — a work can complement a living room, dining room or other space, or it can act as a bold focal point.

Sellers on 1stDibs can take certain steps to help increase their sales. By bringing together some of the world’s best sellers and galleries from over 50 countries specializing in furniture, art, fine jewelry and fashion, our global e-commerce platform offers a unique collection of inventory for buyers seeking the most beautiful things on earth. As a seller, you’ll reach millions of discerning collectors, sophisticated customers and top interior designers around the world.
Here are a few steps you can take to grow your business and increase your sales on 1stDibs:Add all of your inventory. We can’t sell what we don’t have on the marketplace. Even with the expansive range of offerings available on 1stDibs, we know that potential buyers who are looking for that unique one-of-a-kind piece need a range of prices and a variety of colors, sizes and styles from which to choose. When a seller lists more of their inventory on 1stDibs, they’re better positioned to take advantage of the tools and features that the platform provides, which make it easy to recommend an additional piece to a buyer, upsell when a seller lists a complementary piece a month later and more. Even for the platform’s new and custom makers, who typically have a smaller collection on offer, we encourage you to list all the possible variations of a piece to improve the likelihood of attracting greater interest.
Price competitively from the beginning. Boosting your list price to “see what you can get” or leaving a large range for negotiations will likely scare off a potential customer. Because your competition is just a click away, if your price seems inflated compared to others on 1stDibs or other sites, a buyer is less likely to click on your listing to learn more about your piece and they will never know how it stands out from other items.
Respond promptly and professionally to all potential buyer inquiries. Due to the uniqueness and high value of most of the pieces on 1stDibs, buyers typically inquire about similar or complementary pieces from multiple sellers. It is helpful to be the first to respond and help the buyer feel confident purchasing your piece. Our messaging tools allow you to share more about your history and background and, of course, more details on the provenance of a piece. We also provide built-in features to help you close a sale by recommending another piece that is perhaps better suited to the buyer’s budget or sending them a private offer.
