1930s Architecture in Paris, French Book by Jean-Marc Labordiere, 2009
By General Decoration
Located in Atlanta, GA
L'Architecture des Années 30 a Paris (1930s Architecture in Paris), French book by Jean-Marc Larbodiere. The International Style comes from the Modern Movement (Bauhaus in Germany, Le Corbusier, and the Esprit Nouveau in France), an extension of Art Nouveau. This book invites the Parisian walker and tourists to recognize the buildings built in Paris by the greatest architects of the 1930s. After the excitement of the Roaring Twenties, France faced a major economic crisis and political and social uncertainty. Cultural life sees the emergence of mass culture. In architecture, modernism is spreading in society. In 1926, Le Corbusier set...

New Architectural Pleasures, French Book by George Pompidou Art Center, 1985
By Centre Georges Pompidou
Located in Atlanta, GA
Nouveaux Plaisirs d'Architectures (New Architectural Pleasures), French book published by The National Center of Art and Culture Georges Pompidou in Paris, 1985. Les pluralismes de la Creation en Europe et aux Etats-Unis depuis 1968 vus a travers les collections du Deutsches Architekturmuseum de Francfort. (The Pluralisms of Creation in Europe and the United States since 1968 seen through the collections of the Deutsches Architekturmuseum in Frankfurt.) This first edition of the book was published on the occasion of the exhibition of the same name, co-produced with the Center de Création Industrielle and the Deutsches Architekturmuseum, presented from February 21 to April 22, 1985. This book takes up the outline of this exhibition, which presents a panorama of various architectural trends from 1968 to 1985 in Europe and the United States through the collections of the German Museum of Architecture in Frankfurt, inaugurated in 1984. It is also an extension of the Images et Imaginaires d'Architecture event presented at the Center Pompidou by the CCI in 1984. A set of two hundred original drawings, thirty-five models, and a few paintings and sculptures testify to a new plurality of research and the current proliferation of architectural creation. This panorama reflects through some forty projects (nearly half of which were finished), many recent currents, and not just postmodernism. The reader discovers, for example, representatives, side by side: - the rationalist movement, such as Giorgio Grassi...

1925 The Memory Years, French Book by Editions Larousse, 1988
By Modern History
Located in Atlanta, GA
1925, Les Années-Mémoire (1925, The Memory Years), French book by Editions Larousse, 1988. Relive the year 1925 as if you were there. This volume will make you relive, with emotion, the facts and events of the interwar period. Because that year, in France, we hear everywhere humming, "When We Are Two, It's Not The Same Thing" by Maurice Chevalier. Street music and music hall contribute to a good mood. And yet, the economic situation is hardly smiling, and the French government knows many setbacks: in April, Edouard Herriot yields his place as president of the Council to Paul Painlevé, and in October, Aristide Briand, in his turn, replaces it. Inflation in Germany is still rife, and the mark value is almost zero. 1925 is also rich in artistic and sporting events. American crews completed the first circumnavigation of the globe by plane in 175 days. French actor Michel Simon is first seen in Marcel L'Herbier's film "Feu Mathias Pascal." Classical music is not to be outdone, Maurice Ravel composes Tzigane, and Honegger triumphs with his King David. A new phenomenon, sport fascinates more and more French people and attracts many followers. Our tennis players excel at Wimbledon while the All Blacks come to give us a rugby lesson. In Monaco, we happily celebrate Louis II...

The Cars in Posters, French Book by Thierry Favre, 2007
By Modern History
Located in Atlanta, GA
L'Auto s'affiche (The Cars in Posters), French Book by Thierry Favre, 2007. Prefaced by Louis Schweitzer, this book unveils a formidable collection of graphic posters illustrating automobile history. This retrospective allows an understanding of artistic trends and the evolution of advertising while discovering manufacturers, luxury models, casual vehicles, trucks, coaches, and other racing cars. The golden age of the graphic poster began in 1880 in the railway tourism sector. The photographic poster has been successful and has dominated the market since the 1970s. The poster is related to the development of the automobile industry at the beginning of the 20th century. It expresses an advertising message but also becomes a mode of artistic expression in its own right. Thanks to the talent of artists like Pal, Mich, Vincent, Mauzan, Geo Ham, Kow, Cassandre, Savignac, and many others, the poster strikes the imagination of passers-by. It entertains, inspires dreams, and innovates. The graphic print expresses all the major artistic trends, from Art Nouveau to Art Deco. It is paradoxical to note that the woman's omnipresence in the image largely contributed to the birth of the myth of the Automobile. After World War I, the automotive landscape changed a lot. The 416 makes counted around 1910 disappeared for different reasons: non-competitiveness of assemblers, too rapid technical development, and damage correlated with the conflict. On the other hand, new brands resulting, in particular, from the formidable evolution of military aviation from 1915 to 1919 appear: Voisin, Farman, and Hotchkiss wanted to branch out from machine guns. Curiously, the big car...

Sevres Boulogne-Billancourt, Independent Ceramic, French Book by F. Slitine 2007
By Manufacture Nationale de Sèvres
Located in Atlanta, GA
Sevres - Boulogne-Billancourt, La Ceramique Independente (Sevres - Boulogne-Billancourt, The Independent Ceramic), French Book by Florence Slitine, 2007. Preface by Emmanuel Bréon and David Caméo. What happens when Emmanuel Bréon - Chief Curator of the Museum of the 1930s in Boulogne-Billancourt, and David Caméo, Director of the Manufacture Nationale de Sèvres, conceive the project to discover the ceramic heritage of their respective cities? They decided to show them in a joint exhibition and this book. The book writing was entrusted to Florence Slitine, project manager at The Manufacture. With the help of collectors and several museums who lend their pieces and exchange their knowledge, this is the first book that takes stock of the work of these artists. From the end of the 19th century to the 1960s, those industrial ceramic artists worked in Boulogne-Billancourt and the town of Sèvres, on the fringes of the productions of the famous Manufacture. It allows them to restore, in their geographical context, the work of leading artists, to discover ceramists hitherto unknown, and to take stock of the production carried out in Sèvres but outside the National Manufacture. This book publishes unpublished works, marks, and documents, which will fascinate lovers of modern ceramics. It contains entries relating to the following 25 artists: Paul Beyer...

Paris 1925, French book by Armand Lanoux, published by Editions Robert Delpire, Paris in 1957. 1925, which only raised sarcasm yesterday, softened suddenly. We say retro for the fiftieth anniversary of the Decorative Arts. OK, go retro! Joséphine Baker, Charlot, la Violettera, bell bottoms, the threepenny franc, and Valentino reappear in our mythology. Paris 1919 - 1929 Art and Culture, French Book by Vincent Bouvet, 2009
By Modern History
Located in Atlanta, GA
Paris 1919 - 1929 Art, Vie et Culture (art, life, and culture), French book by Vincent Bouvet et Gérad Durozoi, 2009. Paris was an international melting pot of arts and letters during the inter-war period. Between the parade of the Allies in 1919 and the one of the Germans in 1940 on the same Champs-Elysées, Paris experienced a fruitful cultural and intellectual period for 20 years, open to the avant-garde and faithful to the best of tradition. In the period between the two World Wars, France maintained its status as a significant economic, military, and colonial power. The fame of French culture is centralized in Paris, from which ideas and fashions radiate. Artists and creators come from all continents to the City of Light to draw their inspiration and gain recognition in the eyes of the world. During the "Roaring Twenties" that followed the euphoria of victory, Paris shone with a thousand lights. The "Lost Generation," the one of Hemingway and Fitzgerald, is the most significant foreign colonies that animate the nights of Paris who discovers jazz. But the bohemian lifestyle of Montparnasse attracts painters and sculptors from the four corners of the globe, such as Chagall, Giacometti, Miro, and Calder, to the studios, cafés, and bars, such as La Coupole. A chameleon genius, Picasso simultaneously experimented with all the paths, including those of nascent surrealism. Matisse, Léger open academies. The School of Paris brought together painters as varied as Soutine, Derain, Van Dongen, and Foujita. Abstract art set...

Light Up Library Glass Globe on Metal Base by Barrere and Thomas France, 1950s
By Barrère & Thomas, Paris
Located in Atlanta, GA
Girard, Barrere, and Thomas Paris manufactured this impressive terrestrial light-up globe in the 1950s. Geographer J. Forest designed it.
