Sistema Solare Chandelier, Piattelli Design, Ivory-toned Onyx and Brass, 6-shade
Located in Tavarnelle val di Pesa, Florence
Unique chandelier, made from thinly-cut pieces of exquisite ivory-toned translucent onyx. Ideal to be hung over a table, with versatile configurations. Ivory onyx comes from Middle Eastern quarries and has a unique veining. This translucent stone is carefully worked in Italy, and was chosen because of its combination of interesting patterns, high translucency, and the way it makes the light output look warmer. The 6-shade version is ideal to be hung over an oval dining table. Our onyx supplier has worked in many high-end architectural projects, and these same materials have been used at the Armani hotel in Milan. When he was shown the chandelier designs, he rose to the challenge and adapted his tooling to make us perfect round discs. He worked hard to find exactly the right thickness that would keep the depth of the texture. It could not be too thick, otherwise it would lose transparency. And too thin, it would look like it was printed. The result is stunning. The combination of carefully-worked translucent stone and brass works perfectly, and the use of the ingenious Orbitale structure allows the geometry of the chandelier to be played with, and it can be configured in several ways. There is nothing else like this on the market. The Sistema collection uses a clever rotating stem structure and features a shallow drum-shaped shade at the end of each arm. The chandelier arms are designed with two lengths so that each can be staggered at different angles. They work well in any space and suit both regular and low-ceilinged rooms wonderfully. Please see the drawing to get an idea of sizes for the different chandeliers. On the upper side of each disc there is a smaller opening to provide ambient light. Top-quality LEDs with over 80 CRI, meaning that the lighting does not alter the color of food and people. The LEDs are on a 24V direct current feed, so there is no flickering. The arms can be rotated 180 degrees to configure various combinations. As well as two rows of evenly-spaced lights over a dining table, a regular 8-shade star or 4-shade star (see photos) are possible, as well as creative sculptural shapes. The arms can be rotated even when the chandelier is lit. The shades can also be rotated on the arm axis to meet any lighting needs in a living room (paintings, bookshelves etc.). This listing shows the smallest drop. A change of drop is complimentary. Silvio Piattelli copyright and design. Specifications (Note: The Sistema chandelier has glass shades, while Sistema Solare...

Sistema Chandelier by Piattelli Design, 4-shade
Located in Tavarnelle val di Pesa, Florence
This chandelier uses an ingenious rotating stem structure and features a shallow drum-shaped shade at the end of each arm. They work well in any space and suit both regular and low-ceilinged rooms wonderfully. The result is uniform lighting from above the dining table. There is nothing else like this on the market. There are beautiful chandeliers available, but they always tend to give out too much light in the center and too little on either side. This is the smallest Sistema chandelier, with 2 arms and 4 shades. Ideal for a round or square dining table. It also works well over an island. Each shade has two LED strips that can be lit separately. In this way you can have either a regular light or a stronger light depending on how you need to use the chandelier. The LEDs are top quality with a CRI of over 80. This ensures that the natural color of food and people can be seen perfectly. See the next to last photo, where there is some fruit and a color chart below the chandelier. The LEDs are on a 24V direct current feed, so there is no flickering. The arms can rotate 180 degrees, for many possible combinations. See the drawing for the two regular positions. The chandelier can also be rotated when it is lit. The shades can be rotated on the arm axis to meet any lighting needs in a living room (paintings, bookshelves etc.). The shades have neutral white glass fixtures. Please see the photos. On the back there is a smaller Lucite opening for giving ambient light. The chandelier has the ingenious brass finishes of the orbitale collection. This listing shows measurements for a dining table and the smallest drop. A change of drop is complimentary. Please see the last image for all sizes and ask for high resolution technical drawings if you need them. Lisa Johansson-Pape Table lamp Manufactured by Orno Finland, 1950 Brass, leather, canvas shade From the archives of Side Gallery. Barcelona Measurements 10 cm x 10 cm x 69 H cm 3.93 in x 3.93 in x 27.10 H in Literature Design Musuem, Lisa Johansson-Pape, Helsinki, 1986; Ornamo, Helsinki, 1962 Bio Finnish designer Lisa Johansson-Pape enjoyed a long and varied career in lighting, furniture, textile, and ceramic design. She was one of Finland’s leading lighting designers in the 20th century and was instrumental in promoting Finnish design internationally. Born in 1907, Lisa Johansson-Pape studied at the Industrial Art Institute in Helsinki University of Art & Design (Now Aalto University of Art & Design), graduating in 1928. She worked as a furniture designer for Kylmäkoski and Stockmann and created carpets for the Friends of Finnish Handicraft, before turning her attention to lighting design. She collaborating with the Stockmann-owned lighting factory Orno from 1942, famously remarking, “it was quite by accident that I became a design light artist. By education, I am a furniture designer, but I had to make lamps during the war.” Notable designs include the Lisa (1947), Sipuli (1954), and Laura (1957) pendant lamps. The Sipuli, often referred to by the English translation Onion, resembles the form of the vegetable for which it was named. The angular design in opaline glass was awarded a gold medal at the Triennale di Milano in 1954, which was just one of several prizes Johansson-Pape received in her career; she was also awarded a silver medal at the 1951 Triennale...

Shop Unique Furniture on 1stDibs

When it comes to shopping for vintage, new and antique furniture — whether you’re finally moving into that long-coveted loft apartment, ranch-style home, townhouse or furnishing your weekend house on the lake — you should think of your home as a stage for the seating, tables, lighting, storage cabinets and other pieces that best match your personality.

Coziness, comfort and creating a welcoming space are among the important things to consider when buying furniture, whether that means seeking strict cohesion or rooms characterized by a mix-and-match assembly of varying shapes, colors and materials. And for those who now work from home, exercise, eat and relax within the same four walls every day, they’ll also want to think about flexibility and an innovative approach.

Have you built your dream kitchen?

Is your current living-room furniture all that it could be?

Does your toast-worthy bar or vintage bar cart exude equal parts class and cheeriness?

And importantly, is your home officebackyard or otherwise — a happy one, regardless of the design style you happen to gravitate toward?

Although mid-century modern, rustic, minimalist, Art Deco and contemporary looks remain popular, they aren’t the only styles available to design connoisseurs.

Furniture styles are nothing if not fluid, meaning what’s popular one year may not be the next. That’s why it’s crucial to not only pay attention to interior-design trends but also focus on the styles that speak to you. That way, you (and your interior designer, if that is in the plans) can work to create a home that’s entirely your own, complete with impressively modern decor as well as an array of history’s universally renowned iconic designs.

It’s difficult to single out well-recognized designs from what is a crowded pantheon of celebrated and seminal furnishings. Certain outstanding designs have such stellar quality they’ve endured for decades as bona fide cultural treasures, still being manufactured, in many cases, by the same venerable companies that shepherded them into being (think Herman Miller, Knoll and Fritz Hansen). Some works come immediately to mind as contenders for any short list. When you’re discussing the most popular mid-century modern chairs, for example, no tally would be complete without citing designs by Arne Jacobsen, Charlotte Perriand, Charles and Ray Eames and Hans Wegner.

Good furniture, be it authentic vintage furniture or new & custom furniture, allows you to comfortably sit and tell your favorite stories. Great furniture tells a story of its own.

On 1stDibs, find everything from sofas to serveware to credenzas to coffee tables, and every other type of antique, vintage and new furniture you need to create a singular space that you’ll be proud to call home.
