XOX Attitude Red Black 1/10 - graphic, pop-art, figurative, resin sculpture
Located in Bloomfield, ON
Playful, colourful and imaginative, Viktor Mitic’s latest series of table-top sculptures appear to merge pop art with science fiction. The colour palette is fun and bright—yellow, red, black and turquoise. These 3-D figures began as digital creations, sculpted out of resin and painted. Their form was initially inspired by the towering abstract sculptures Mitic produced from images of paint splashes on his studio floor. Edition one of ten. “This character has emerged from a shadow of one of my sculptures (as in the video) I have always been a fan of science as well as science fiction writing and movies and for me, X-O-X is a being that came out of a technological world , possibly from another galaxy.” Viktor Mitic “As an icon, or hybrid worthy Viktor Mitic- X-O-X has a synthetic, playful identity. It’s culturally a fusion of influences brought together in one formal public sculpture.” John K. Grande, author, poet, essayist He earned a BFA from the University of Toronto in 1995 with studies in art history at Sheridan College. He has exhibited his post-Pop inspired...

"Silent Reality Everywhere" Print 53" × 40" inch Ed. 1/10 by Kate Garner
Located in Culver City, CA
"Silent Reality Everywhere" Print 53" × 40" inch Ed. 1/10 by Kate Garner Signed and numbered by the artist. Not framed. Ships in a tube. Kate Garner is an English photographer, fine artist, and singer. Garner has photographed a wide range of musicians and celebrities, including Dr. Dre, Leigh Bowery, JT LeRoy, Angelina Jolie, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, David Bowie, Cameron Diaz, PJ Harvey, John Galliano, Björk, and Kate Moss. Her work has appeared in the American and British versions of Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar as well as W magazine, Interview, GQ, Vanity Fair, Elle, and The Sunday Times. Kate Garner was expelled from high school at the age of 16 and became a runaway who joined The Children Of God. To escape the grasp of the cult she hitchhiked from London through Eastern Europe to India in 1970, where she lived for a year as a traveler before being located by her parents. She attended art school at Blackpool in the North of England and later moved to London, where she began to both photograph and model for up-and-coming magazines such as The Face and i-D. Kate Garner first came widely into the public eye as one-third of the 1980s avant-garde, new wave pop project Haysi Fantayzee, along with other members Jeremy Healy and Paul Caplin. Emanating from street art scenes such as the Blitz Kids that were cropping up in London in the early 1980s, Haysi’s music combined reggae, country, and electro with political and sociological lyrics couched as nursery rhymes. Catapulted to stardom by their visual sensibilities, Haysi Fantayzee combined their extreme clothes sense – described as combining white Rasta, tribal chieftain, and Dickensian styles – with a quirky musical sound comparable to other new wave musical pop acts of the era, such as Bow Wow Wow...

AYAKAMAY Mad Supper painting
By Ayakamay
Located in NEW YORK, NY
AYAKAMAY, "Mad Supper," 2013: The work of the late New York based artist, AYAKAMAY (1985-2019), combines reality with fantastically constructed traditional Japanese cultural aesthetics to create a dialogue between contemporary American urban identity and femininity. Medium: Acrylic & Spray Paint on Canvas. Dimensions: 36 x 48 x 1 inches. Very good overall condition. Unique. Signed & titled on the verso in black marker. Provenance: Ideal Glass Studios New York. Ayakamay (1985-2019) Biography: Born in 1985 in Tennessee, Ayakamay’s family moved several times in the US due to her father’s job and also traveled back and forth to Japan where the family decided to settle down when she was ten. Having been raised in an American lifestyle, the shift to Japan was especially confusing and overwhelming. As she was being forcibly shoved into a cultural mold that did not fit, she sought solace in art. Eventually Ayakamay’s parents decided art was a negative distraction and took away her art supplies. This led to the darkest period in her life, but served as an impetus for her to find new ways of expression via photography. At nineteen, Ayakamay headed for New York City and prior to her tragic passing in 2019, exhibited & performed with great consistency in both New York & Tokyo while being featured in publications such as, I-D magazine, Hyperallergic, The New York Times & Artnet News. Visual art is among the oldest forms of expression, and it has been evolving for centuries. Beautiful objects can provide a window to the past or insight into our current time. Art collecting enhances daily life through the presence of meaningful work. It displays an appreciation for culture, whether a print by Elizabeth Catlett channeling social change or a narrative quilt by Faith Ringgold.

Contemporary art has lured more initiates to collecting than almost any other category, with notable artists including Yayoi Kusama, Marc Chagall, Kehinde Wiley and Jean-Michel Basquiat. Navigating the waiting lists for the next Marlene Dumas, Jeff Koons or Jasper Johns has become competitive.

When you’re living with art, particularly as people more often work from home and enjoy their spaces, it’s important to choose art that resonates with you. While the richness of art with its many movements, styles and histories can be overwhelming, the key is to identify what is appealing and inspiring. Artwork can play with the surrounding color of a room, creating a layered approach. The dynamic shapes and sizes of sculptures can set different moods, such as a bronze by Miguel Guía on a mantel or an Alexander Calder mobile suspended over a table. A wall of art can evoke emotions in an interior while showing off your tastes and interests. A salon-style wall mixing eclectic pieces like landscape paintings with charcoal drawings is a unique way to transform a space and show off a collection.

For art meditating on the subconscious, investigate Surrealists like Joan Miró and Salvador Dalí. Explore Pop art and its leading artists such as Andy Warhol, Rosalyn Drexler and Keith Haring for bright and bold colors. Not only did these artists question art itself, but also how we perceive society. Similarly, 20th-century photography and abstract painting reconsidered the intent of art.

Abstract Expressionists like Helen Frankenthaler and Lee Krasner and Color Field artists including Sam Gilliam broke from conventional ideas of painting, while Op artists such as Yaacov Agam embraced visual trickery and kinetic movement. Novel visuals are also integral to contemporary work influenced by street art, such as sculptures and prints by KAWS.

Realist portraiture is a global tradition reflecting on what makes us human. This is reflected in the work of Slim Aarons, an American photographer whose images are at once candid and polished and appeared in Holiday magazine and elsewhere. Innovative artists Mickalene Thomas and Kerry James Marshall are now offering new perspectives on the form.

Collecting art is a rewarding, lifelong pursuit that can help connect you with the creative ways historic, modern and contemporary artists have engaged with the world. For more tips on piecing together an art collection, see our guide to buying and displaying art.
