Color marking pen on tracing paper. Image 12 ½ x 11 inches, sheet 15 x 18 ½ inches. Very fresh, in good condition with bright colors save for horizontal creases at the lower sheet edge slightly into the image and a few other soft creases.
Leonard Weinglass along with Leonard Boudin were attorneys for Anthony Russo and Daniel Ellsberg at the Pentagon Papers Trial in 1973. Upon his death in 2011 the NY Times called Weinglass, “perhaps the nation’s pre-eminent progressive defense lawyer, who represented political renegades
Provenance: Directly from the artist David Rose to this dealer in the late 1980’s. I knew David as an artist and friend as we both lived in Los Angeles. It has been in temperature and humidity storage since its acquisition.
The Ellsberg Trial was the beginning of a long career for Rose as a court reporter
Rose’s papers are in Special Collections of USC, The University of Southern California.

Rose's courtroom career began in 1973 with the trial of Daniel Ellsberg, the former defense analyst who released the Pentagon Papers regarding the Viet Nam War to the New York Times. (Rose received an Emmy Award nomination for his coverage of the Pentagon Papers trial.) Rose's sketches of this trial-- along with all those that would follow through the next twenty-five years-- appeared in television news broadcasts and newspapers all over the world. He saw himself as a reporter-- but with colored pencils and sketchpads as his tools. He tried to capture the emotions in the courtroom-- the tension, anger, and the body language that conveyed them. Over the years, Rose's art depicted the trials of some of the most famous-- and infamous-- personalities to make the news: Klaus Barbie (the Butcher of Lyon), Patty Hearst, Sirhan Sirhan, John Z. Francis Chapin, affectionately called the “Dean of Chicago Painters” by his colleagues, was one of the city’s most popular and celebrated painters in his day. Born at the dawn of the 20th Century in Bristolville, Ohio, Chapin graduated from Washington & Jefferson College near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania before enrolling at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1922. He would set down deep roots at the Art Institute of Chicago, exhibiting there over 31 times between 1926 and 1951. In 1927 Chapin won the prestigious Bryan Lathrop Fellowship from the Art Institute – a prize that funded the artist’s yearlong study trip to Europe. Upon his return to the United States, Chapin decided to remain in Chicago, noting the freedom Chicago artists have in developing independently of the pressure to conform to pre-existing molds (as was experienced by artists in New York, for example). Chapin became a popular instructor at the Art Institute, teaching there from 1929 to 1947 and at the Art Institute’s summer art school in Saugatuck, Michigan (now called Oxbow) between 1934 – 1938 (he was the director of the school from 1941-1945). Shelley Lazarus (American, b. 1936) is a Los Angeles based artist who studied at Syracuse University, Pratt College, and Parsons School of Design, and has been teaching art for over 20 years.
Lazarus’ main goal as an artist is to bring a sense of movement and a sense of emotion to her paintings through the use of color. Her landscapes are done mostly on location, where she can feel the power of the atmosphere around her and through the use of color, composition and the movement of space, capture the subtle nuances that reflect in the light.
Lazarus was born and educated in New York, where as a teenager she began her art studies at Pratt College while still attending Lincoln High School. She later was a student at Syracuse University and Parsons School of Design. In 1973 she relocated to the Los Angeles area with her husband and their three sons. Although her art career was interrupted for a time, in 1981 she became involved with the Brentwood Art Center.
Since then, she has been actively pursuing her art career. Her works have been shown annually in both local and national shows. These works have received numerous awards including a Diptych and a Triptych that were in the International Art Competition for the Olympics in 1984, first place from the San Fernando Valley Art Club for a watercolor in the Santa Monica Mountain Celebration, and the recent Oklahoma National Watercolor investment award. She is a member of the Watercolor Honor Society and a signature member of the Oklahoma National Watercolor Society.
Her paintings are in the collections of private, corporate, and public sectors in the US and abroad, including the library at Los Angeles County Museum of Art. She is an active participant in Women Painters West, Valley Watercolor Society, Gallery 825 and Valley Institute of Visual Arts (VIVA).
Lazarus has taught art to both children and adults. At the present time she is teaching advance watercolor painting studies to adults at the Brentwood Art Center. She also teaches plein-air painting during the summer months and has given private lessons to those in the entertainment industry as well as to royalty.

This artwork, "Poland (Glider)," centers on a stamp that depicts an aircraft flying above a glacial horizon. Building on the style and environment established by the stamp art, Moreau extended this scene across land and sea in vibrant blue pencil.
A statement by the artist:
My drawings function as personal interpretations of political or commercial propaganda. I begin with imagery found on postage stamps or printed advertisements and, using the visual logic and graphic language of the image, I attempt to tease out a larger framework from which to consider it. Finished pieces often incorporate printed matter and cultural detritus, which gives them an immediate and tactile connection to the world of objects.
I am particularly interested in the postage stamp as a geographical artifact, and through my drawing process I attempt to learn something about a place by studying its official imagery and then creating a world beyond the borders of its fragmentary scenes. The finished drawings and paintings are a record of this study; they are a dialogue between the printed and the drawn, the official and the personal, the real and the imaginary. They are a metaphor for the way in which we conjure the places we hear about on the news and read about in books, using the tiniest pieces of information to construct a reality that most likely bears little resemblance to any actual place.
Andrea Moreau’s mixed-media works, on the other hand, walk a tightrope between context and isolation. Moreau selects a postage stamp to serve as the starting point for a piece on paper, then “completes” the image with colored pencil. These stamps may become lost in a frenzy of Moreau’s mark-making, as with “Mexico (Flowers) #15,” or left comically obvious, like in “USA (Barbershop...

Born in Chicago in 1929, and neé Ganansky-Teitelbaum, she graduated from The Art Institute of Chicago in 1951 and moved to New York in 1959 where she lived ever since. Taking as her professional name her parents’ first names, Edith was a prolific artist working first as an abstract expressionist then turning in the 1980s to figurative, political work consisting of drawings, paintings, and embroideries which she called “Daily Rage”.
She had been represented by the Phyllis Kind Gallery and her work is in the Hirshhorn Museum as well as numerous private collections.
Edith, along with her partner of 35 years, Bea Kreloff, (1925-2016), founded Art Workshop International in 1981 where they held art and writing workshops in Assisi, Italy, Monhegan Island, Maine, and Puerto Escondido, Mexico.
