How Much is a Real Emerald Ring?
Finding the Right rings for You
Antique and vintage rings have long held a special place in the hearts of fine jewelry lovers all over the world.
No matter their origin or specific characteristics, rings are timeless, versatile accessories. They’ve carried deep meaning since at least the Middle Ages, when diamond rings symbolized strength and other kinds of rings were worn to signify romantic feelings or to denote an affiliation with a religious order. Rings have also forever been emblematic of eternity.
Over time, rings have frequently taken the form of serpents, which have long been associated with eternal life, health and renewal. Italian luxury jewelry house Bulgari has become famous for its widely loved Serpenti motif, for example, and its Serpenti ring, like the other accessories in the collection, began as an homage to jewelry of the Roman and Hellenistic eras. The serpent is now a popular motif in fine jewelry. Jewelry devotees have long pined for rings adorned with reptiles, thanks to antique Victorian rings — well, specifically, Queen Victoria’s illustrious engagement ring, which took the form of a gold snake set with rubies, diamonds and an emerald (her birthstone). Designs for Victorian-era engagement rings often featured repoussé work and chasing, in which patterns are hammered into the metal.
Engagement rings, which are reliably intimidating to shop for, are still widely recognized as symbols of love and commitment. On 1stDibs, a range of buying guides can be found for those in the market for antique engagement rings, vintage engagement rings or Art Deco engagement rings.
The most collectible antique engagement rings and vintage engagement rings are those from the Victorian, Edwardian and Art Deco eras. Named for the monarchies of the four King Georges, who in succession ruled England starting in 1714 (plus King William’s reign), antique Georgian rings, be they engagement rings or otherwise, are also coveted by collectors. Pearls, along with colored gemstones like garnets, rubies and sapphires, were widely used in Georgian jewelry. The late-1700s paste jewelry was a predecessor to what we now call fashion or costume jewelry.
The Art Nouveau movement (1880–1910) brought with it rings inspired by the natural world. Antique Art Nouveau rings might feature depictions of winged insects and fauna as well as women, who were simultaneously eroticized and romanticized, frequently with long flowing hair. Art Deco jewelry, on the other hand, which originated during the 1920s and ’30s, is by and large “white jewelry.” White metals, primarily platinum, were favored over yellow gold in the design of antique Art Deco rings and other accessories as well as geometric motifs, with women drawn to the era’s dazzling cocktail rings in particular.
Whether you’re hunting down a chunky classic for a Prohibition-themed cocktail party or seeking a clean contemporary design to complement your casual ensemble, find an exquisite collection of antique, new and vintage rings on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022Yes, Zambian emeralds are indeed real emeralds. In fact, they are a superior variety of natural emeralds, known for their deep green hue and slight blue overtone. On 1stDibs, find a collection of authentic emerald gems from some of the world’s top sellers.
- Are Effy emeralds real?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertMarch 13, 2024Yes, Effy emeralds are generally real. However, not all pieces feature natural emeralds. The luxury jewelry maker uses a mix of naturally derived and lab-created gemstones in its jewelry. Experts consider lab-created emeralds to be real gemstones, but they are inexpensive compared to natural stones. Because lab-grown diamonds don’t meet our luxury jewelry standards, 1stDibs does not allow listings that are inclusive of lab-grown diamonds on the platform (this policy is also shared by major auction houses). However, fashion jewelry that features lab-grown or cultured gemstones other than diamonds can be found on the site. On 1stDibs, explore a collection of Effy jewelry from some of the world's top sellers.
- 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 22, 2021It's easier to tell if an emerald is real by looking at the facets. A real emerald will withstand signs of wear and retain hard, sharp edges, while a fake emerald will have slightly rounded edges due to wear and age.
- 1stDibs ExpertMay 5, 2023To know if a Bvlgari ring is real, first examine the stamps. On both sides of authentic rings, you’ll find the Bvlgari logo in the correct font with a “V” in place of the “U.” Some styles have the name just once along with the word “Roma,” while others show the brand name twice with dots separating them. With either style, the letters should be clean and evenly spaced. Replicas may have the correct wording but have only faint stamps or bunched characters. Shop a selection of Bvlgari rings on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022To check if your BVLGARI ring is real, check all the details of the design. The size of the ring will be stamped inside and should be crisp and easy to read. - Roman Malakov DiamondsMarch 22, 2021It can. If the diamonds are inexpensive. This is because it is not advisable to set real diamonds in a 925 ring (sterling silver ring). Silver is a very soft metal. Diamonds could easily fall out of the ring even with very few wear-and-tear.
- 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022There are a couple of different ways to identify real jade. The most common is the scratch test: if the jade scratches easily, it may not be real. Real jade is also cool to the touch and doesn’t warm easily. When in doubt, work with a certified gemologist to determine the authenticity of your jade ring. You’ll find a variety of expertly vetted jade jewelry pieces on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 17, 2023To tell if a vintage ring is real, examine its details. Older pieces are usually handmade, so they’ll often lack perfect symmetry or feature minor flaws in the details. Does it show signs of wear and tear that normally wouldn’t appear on a new accessory? Stamps and/or markings inside the band may indicate the content of the metal as well as the manufacturer. You can consult online resources to see if the stylistic characteristics match jewelry from the era during which you believe the ring originated. Certified appraisers or seasoned professionals within the jewelry industry can also help you determine the age of a piece. If you wish to know if a vintage ring’s gemstone is real, consult an experienced gemologist. Shop a range of jewelry on 1stDibs.

- Is a Cartier ring real gold?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertDecember 12, 2023Whether a Cartier ring is real gold depends on the piece. - 1stDibs ExpertAugust 17, 2021Real diamonds are not usually put in sterling silver rings because the metal is too soft. As a result, cubic zirconia stones are often used instead of a real diamond. This will be marked with “CZ”.1stDibs ExpertAugust 24, 2021No, they usually do not put real diamonds in silver rings. Sterling silver is too soft, and would not be a good metal to hold diamonds. Most people use cubic zirconia stones (CZ) in sterling silver. Find a variety of diamond rings on 1stDibs.

When in doubt about authenticity, seek the opinion of a licensed appraiser or knowledgeable dealer. Explore a selection of Cartier Love jewelry on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertJune 30, 2023What wearing an emerald ring means varies. There are numerous myths attributed to the emerald’s spiritual powers, like placing an emerald under your tongue will allow you to see the future (this isn’t recommended). In some cases, emeralds are preferable in engagement rings because the stone is thought to represent love and luck. For those celebrating a birthday in May, an emerald ring is a fashionable way to show off your birthstone. Some people also associate emeralds with lasting loyalty and hope. Shop a variety of emerald rings on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertNovember 14, 2023Whether emerald engagement rings are unlucky is a matter of personal belief. Some people think that emeralds are bad luck for wedding rings, but not for engagement rings. Others associate emeralds with good luck, perhaps due to their color being the same as that of a four-leaf clover. Most people who choose emerald engagement rings enjoy their beauty without concern for superstition. Find a collection of emerald engagement rings on 1stDibs.
