The mark on the underneath (see image) indicates that this spittoon is of Japanese Imari porcelain, manufactured circa 1880, and made specifically for the American market for the preponderance of bars and saloons at that time.
These were popular from 1865 to the turn of the century; this is a particularly fancy and elaborate example. Note the copious and highly detailed and beautiful floral decoration to the inside of the upper portion of the spittoon; pretty fancy for something meant for spit and saliva!
Fantastic and all original condition with no cracks, no chips and very bright paint in sharp colors of blue rust and pink, and meticulously painted in a floral pattern. Several of these would have been “stationed” in strategic places within a saloon. This is a wonderful piece of porcelain, and quality item of saloon and Western United States history...

Vanity Fair was a weekly magazine published in London, founded & edited by Thomas Gibson Bowles. His aim was to expose to contemporary vanities of Victorian society. From 1868 to 1914, full page colour lithographs appeared in most weekly issues, frequently lampooning or lauding their subjects which included artists, athletes, royalty, politicians, scientists, authors, actors, sportsmen, lawyers, diplomats, soldiers, clergy, scholars and other celebrities of the day - mostly British, but also many other internationally significant personalities. Over 2,300 of these colour cartoons were printed, and they are considered the chief cultural legacy of the magazine, forming a pictorial record of many of the most significant public figures of the period. They are renowned throughout the world and highly collectible and recognisable. Famous artists contributed to Vanity Fair, typically under pen names. The best remembered today is Leslie Ward (1851-1922), who signed his works as "Spy", and whose caricatures account for well over half of those featured in Vanity Fair. That does not mean it is without beautiful age patina of marks and distressing from over 100 years of use. The very top of the carved crown on the headboard had cracked and broken away and been lost over the years. But one of our staff artisans has hand carved a replacement. It is spectacular. When I was a teenager this high Victorian style of bed is what my mom (a very talented interior designer) put in my bedroom (previously I had a white and pink frilly canopy bed my dad made me) and it remained in her home long after I left. In my room it was paired with the matching Victorian dresser and washstand as nightstand. Beautiful. Our antique furniture experts have dated this Victorian cylinder bureau to have been made around 1880.
The desk has been fully and meticulously restored by craftsmen in our own workshops and we consider it to be of “museum quality”.
This lovely Victorian Cylinder Bureau would make a bold statement wherever it was situated. Anyone who selects a piece of furniture this impressive to make their place of work will know that this cylinder bureau not only looks good but is also extremely practical. Just look at the copious amount of storage that is on offer for a start.
As you can see by looking at the range of photographs supplied, the Bureau houses numerous cupboards as well as a range of drawers of varying sizes and capacity and numerous other storage areas to accommodate copious amounts of stationery, books, office supplies and anything else that you like to have at hand when working.
The cylinder bureau can be positively attributed to the makers and suppliers Edwards and Roberts of London as it has a plate showing their name, as can be seen in the gallery of photographs.
The retractable top encloses a neatly fitted interior comprising six small drawers together with a bank of pigeon holes. The slide is finished nicely with an inset gold tooled burgundy leather writing surface.
