"Follow me / Like me" Oil painting 79" x 59" inch by Patricio Gonzalez
Located in Culver City, CA
"Follow me / Like me" Oil painting 79" x 59" inch by Patricio Gonzalez oil and silver leaves on canvas From "Looking for Happiness" series LOOKING FOR HAPPINESS Like "el dorado", a cultural construction, a myth, the Looking for happiness series talks about the illusion of happiness. Using coordinates between different geographical points and world views, seeking to generate a dialogue between stories. In this way, places speak to tell us about degraded utopias, religious crusades, martyrs and oppressors, wars, victories, and defeats. All searches for what cannot be found. The infinite existing possibilities, in this continuous present and its accumulation, to be history. The utopian idea of achieving completeness or completeness. The transformation of the fabric into jewelry, the transmutation that moves from the sacred to the economic. The "object of desire" is the engine of life and its different permutations. Curriculum vitae Born on February 14, 1974, Santiago, Chile. Study at the School of Fine Arts of t he University of Chile and the University Complutense Hotels guest, Spain. He also attended workshops in painting, drawing and engraving the Circulo de Bellas Artes in Madrid. Work in the study of Guillermo Muñoz Vera, Madrid. Feather Group Four, Silverpoint Drawing, Bird's Feathers, Soft Gray on White
Located in Kent, CT
This delicate drawing is made with silverpoint on prepared archival board. The exploration of ephemerality, and the fragility of nature, its textures and movement, is the focus of this work by Margot Glass. The exquisite beauty of a group of simple feathers, often overlooked or considered mundane, is discovered and elevated through close examination and exquisite drawing by the artist. Signed and titled on verso and initialed on recto, lower right corner. Framed in a silver frame, 10 x 8 inches (unframed), 12 x 10 inches (framed). Glass draws with pure silver not only for the delicacy of line the metal point provides, but also for the allure of using a semiprecious metal as a drawing material. Working on an archival board allows the gleam and luster and delicate reflective silver properties of the metallic medium to present as soft and textured against the ground. The surface is primed with traditional silverpoint ground. The silverpoint ground is slightly chalky when dry to provide a subtle toothy surface to grab the silver particles. Glass is interested in the tradition of using nature as idealized ornament in art and design while seeking to carefully observe as accurately as possible in all the irregularity and imperfection. The metallic lines enhance the decorative qualities of the filigree patterns formed by the minute details in each object. Her compositions are tightly cropped to bring the subject as close to the edge of the picture plane as possible. Margot Glass’s work been exhibited widely in the United States and internationally. Glass’s education includes studies in the Brown/RISD Exchange Program, Brown University...

Vintage Magnum Silver gelatin photograph "George Balanchine" for LOOK Magazine
Located in Surfside, FL
Framed Dimensions (inches): 14.5" x 16.5" Ernst Haas (1921–1986) is acclaimed as one of the most celebrated and influential photographers of the 20th century and considered one of the pioneers of color photography. Haas was born in Vienna in 1921, and took up photography after the war. At the invitation of Robert Capa, Haas joined Magnum in 1949, developing close associations with Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson, and Werner Bischof. His images were disseminated by magazines like Life and Vogue and, in 1962, were the subject of the first single-artist exhibition of color photography at New York's Museum of Modern Art. He served as president of the cooperative Magnum Photos, and his book The Creation (1971) was one of the most successful photography books ever, selling 350,000 copies. A Poet’s Camera (1949), which combined poetry with metaphoric imagery by artists like Edward Weston, was particularly important to Haas's early development. Unsure of his career path, Haas realized that photography could provide both a means of support and a vehicle for communicating his ideas. He obtained his first camera in 1946, at the age of 25, trading a 20-pound block of margarine for a Rolleiflex on the Vienna black market. In 1954 Robert Capa, Magnum's first president, was killed while on assignment covering the First Indochina War. That same year, Werner Bischof died in a car accident in the Andes. Following their deaths, Haas was elected to Magnum's board of directors and traveled to Indochina himself to cover the war. After the death of David “Chim” Seymour in Suez in 1959, Haas was named the fourth president of Magnum. In 1962 the Museum of Modern Art in New York presented a ten-year survey of Haas's color photography. Haas had been included in Edward Steichen's exhibition The Family of Man, which premiered in 1955 and traveled to 38 countries. In addition to editorial journalism and unit stills work, Haas was also highly regarded for advertising photography, contributing groundbreaking campaigns for Volkswagen automobiles and Marlboro...

Silver Rock Melon: A Framed 19th C. Color Engraving by George Brookshaw
Located in Alamo, CA
This is a 19th century colored aquatint and stipple engraving finished by hand entitled "Silver Rock Melon", drawn and engraved by George Brookshaw and published in London in 1812 as plate 67 in his 'Pomona Britannica; or, A Collection of the Most Esteemed Fruits'. It depicts a Silver Rock Melon still on the vine, but the melon lies on a heater green mat. A wedge of the melon has been dissected to reveal its inner anatomy, including the seeds. The melon skin is a heather and light green color, while the inner portions are a light peach color. The vine and leaves are shown attractive shades of light green and there are soft yellow flowers. The plant is displayed on a light brown textured background with shadows to impart 3-dimensionality. The scene is reminiscent of an engraving in an 18th century artistically stylized human anatomy atlas. There are wide white margins. The title and inscription lies within the lower border. This striking engraving is presented in a reddish brown decorative wood frame with a darker brown scroll-work outer trim and a gold-colored inner fillet and a thick heather green mat. The frame measures 25.75" high, 21.5" wide and 1.13" deep. It is glazed with UV conservation glass. There is a short thin vertical line of discoloration in the lower margin through the word "melon" and a tiny spot in the upper margin on the left. The print and frame are otherwise in excellent condition. There is a second Brookshaw engraving that is framed in identical moulding, although a slightly different size and a different color mat. t depicts a cluster of grapes. The two prints would make a striking display pairing...

Lancaster LL678 ‘Lily Mars’ – I Original Silver Gelatin photograph, December 1943 12 x 16 cm Stamped to reverse ‘The Photograph has been passed by Censor’ ‘Copyright This TP copyright illustration from “The Aeroplane” must not be reproduced without the written permission of Temple Press Ltd’. ‘A general view of an Avro Lancaster II with Hercules radial motors.’ 300 Lancaster II aeroplanes were made, fitted with Bristol Hercules radial engines, as there was a worry that there would be a shortage of Merlin engines, reserved for the Spitfire and Hurricane. Lily Mars was named after the 1943 American musical starring Judy Garland and was based at RAF Waterbeach, in Cambridgeshire. A podcast gives details of the final flight on 13 June 1944 which was to be the final raid of the crew’s tour. On the home run LL678 was intercepted and shot down by a night fighter capitained by Oberleutnant Schmidt in a Bf 110 at 01.24 hrs at Zuidloo, a small hamlet, where five of the eight crew are buried; the other three crew members baled out and escaped. Photography, Drawings, Prints, Sculptures and Paintings for Sale

Whether growing your current fine art collection or taking the first steps on that journey, you will find an extensive range of original photography, drawings, prints, sculptures, paintings and more on 1stDibs.

Visual art is among the oldest forms of expression, and it has been evolving for centuries. Beautiful objects can provide a window to the past or insight into our current time. Art collecting enhances daily life through the presence of meaningful work. It displays an appreciation for culture, whether a print by Elizabeth Catlett channeling social change or a narrative quilt by Faith Ringgold.

Contemporary art has lured more initiates to collecting than almost any other category, with notable artists including Yayoi Kusama, Marc Chagall, Kehinde Wiley and Jean-Michel Basquiat. Navigating the waiting lists for the next Marlene Dumas, Jeff Koons or Jasper Johns has become competitive.

When you’re living with art, particularly as people more often work from home and enjoy their spaces, it’s important to choose art that resonates with you. While the richness of art with its many movements, styles and histories can be overwhelming, the key is to identify what is appealing and inspiring. Artwork can play with the surrounding color of a room, creating a layered approach. The dynamic shapes and sizes of sculptures can set different moods, such as a bronze by Miguel Guía on a mantel or an Alexander Calder mobile suspended over a table. A wall of art can evoke emotions in an interior while showing off your tastes and interests. A salon-style wall mixing eclectic pieces like landscape paintings with charcoal drawings is a unique way to transform a space and show off a collection.

For art meditating on the subconscious, investigate Surrealists like Joan Miró and Salvador Dalí. Explore Pop art and its leading artists such as Andy Warhol, Rosalyn Drexler and Keith Haring for bright and bold colors. Not only did these artists question art itself, but also how we perceive society. Similarly, 20th-century photography and abstract painting reconsidered the intent of art.

Abstract Expressionists like Helen Frankenthaler and Lee Krasner and Color Field artists including Sam Gilliam broke from conventional ideas of painting, while Op artists such as Yaacov Agam embraced visual trickery and kinetic movement. Novel visuals are also integral to contemporary work influenced by street art, such as sculptures and prints by KAWS.

Realist portraiture is a global tradition reflecting on what makes us human. This is reflected in the work of Slim Aarons, an American photographer whose images are at once candid and polished and appeared in Holiday magazine and elsewhere. Innovative artists Mickalene Thomas and Kerry James Marshall are now offering new perspectives on the form.

Collecting art is a rewarding, lifelong pursuit that can help connect you with the creative ways historic, modern and contemporary artists have engaged with the world. For more tips on piecing together an art collection, see our guide to buying and displaying art.
