Why Gold Shines in Jewelry Craftsmanship

Gold is the feel-good metal, the serotonin of jewelry. Wear vintage and antique gold necklaces, watches, gold bracelets or gold rings and you feel happy, you feel dressed, you feel, well, yourself.

Gold, especially yellow gold, with its rich patina and ancient pedigree going back thousands of years, is the steady standby, the well-mannered metal of choice. Any discussion of this lustrous metal comes down to a basic truth: Gold is elementary, my dear. Gold jewelry that couples the mystique of the metal with superb design and craftsmanship achieves the status of an enduring classic. Many luxury houses have given us some of our most treasured and lasting examples of gold jewelry over the years.

Since its founding, in 1837, Tiffany & Co. has built its reputation on its company jewelry as well as its coterie of boutique designers, which has included Jean Schlumberger, Donald Claflin, Angela Cummings and Elsa Peretti. There are numerous gold Tiffany classics worth citing. Some are accented with gemstones, but all stand out for their design and the workmanship displayed.

For the woman who prefers a minimalist look, the Tiffany & Co. twist bangle (thin, slightly ovoid) is stylishly simple. For Cummings devotees, signature pieces feature hard stone inlay, such as her pairs of gold ear clips inlaid with black jade (a play on the classic Chanel black and tan), or bangles whose design recalls ocean waves, with undulating lines of lapis lazuli and mother-of-pearl. And just about any design by the great Jean Schlumberger is by definition a classic.

Even had he eschewed stones and diamonds, Southern-born David Webb would be hailed for the vast arsenal of heavy gold jewelry he designed. Gold, usually hammered or textured in some manner, defines great David Webb jewelry. The self-taught jeweler made very au courant pieces while drawing inspiration from ancient and out-of-the-way sources — East meets West in the commanding gold necklaces made by Webb in the early 1970s. The same could be said for his endlessly varied gold cuffs.

In Europe, many houses have given us gold jewelry that sets the highest standard for excellence, pieces that were highly sought after when they were made and continue to be so.

Numerous designs from Cartier are homages to gold. There are the classic Trinity rings, necklaces and bracelets — trifectas of yellow, white and rose gold. As a testament to the power of love, consider the endurance of the Cartier Love bracelet.

Aldo Cipullo, Cartier’s top in-house designer from the late 1960s into the early ’70s, made history in 1969 with the Love bracelet. Cipullo frequently said that the Love bracelet was born of a sleepless night contemplating a love affair gone wrong and his realization that “the only remnants he possessed of the romance were memories.” He distilled the urge to keep a loved one close into a slim 18-karat gold bangle.

BVLGARI and its coin jewelry, gemme nummarie, hit the jackpot when the line launched in the 1960s. The line has been perennially popular. BVLGARI coin jewelry features ancient Greek and Roman coins embedded in striking gold mounts, usually hung on thick link necklaces of varying lengths. In the 1970s, BVLGARI introduced the Tubogas line, most often made in yellow gold. The Tubogas watches are classics, and then there is the Serpenti, the house's outstanding snake-themed watches and bracelets.

A collection called Monete that incorporated the gold coins is one of several iconic BVLGARI lines that debuted in the 1970s and ’80s, catering to a new generation of empowered women. Just as designers like Halston and Yves Saint Laurent were popularizing fuss-free ready-to-wear fashion for women on the go, BVLGARI offered jewels to be lived in

Since Van Cleef & Arpels opened its Place Vendôme doors in 1906, collection after collection of jewelry classics have enchanted the public. As predominantly expressed in a honeycomb of gold, there is the Ludo watch and accessories, circa the 1920s, and the golden Zip necklace, 1951, whose ingenious transformation of the traditional zipper was originally proposed by the Duchess of Windsor. Van Cleef's Alhambra, with its Moroccan motif, was introduced in 1968 and from the start its popularity pivoted on royalty and celebrity status. It remains one of VCA’s most popular and collected styles.

Mention must be made of Buccellati, whose name is synonymous with gold so finely spun that it suggests tapestry. The house’s many gold bracelets, typically embellished with a few or many diamonds, signified taste and distinction and are always in favor on the secondary market. Other important mid-20th-century houses known for their gold-themed jewelry include Hermès and Ilias Lalaounis.

Questions About Forget Me Not Ring
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 8, 2023
Yes, a wedding ring can be a diamond ring. In fact, you're free to wear any type of ring that appeals to you as a wedding ring. You could opt to wear a solitaire diamond ring to symbolize your wedding vows or a band ring that features multiple diamonds, such as an eternity band that shows diamonds all the way around its surface. Find a large selection of diamond wedding rings on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 27, 2023
Yes, a solitaire ring can be a wedding ring. Some men choose to wear a ring set with a single gemstone, like a diamond or a sapphire, to symbolize their wedding vows. Women may also opt for solitaire rings. However, it can be difficult to wear a solitaire ring with an engagement ring. You can address this challenge by wearing your wedding ring on your left hand and your engagement ring on your right hand. On 1stDibs, shop a wide variety of wedding rings.
  • 1stDibs ExpertMarch 3, 2023
What a three-ring wedding ring means is largely a matter of personal interpretation. However, many people associate the top engagement ring with the promise of marriage, the middle ring or wedding ring with the promise of vows and the third ring or eternity ring with anniversaries. Shop a collection of wedding rings from some of the world's top sellers on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 2, 2023
Whether your wedding ring should match your engagement ring is up to personal preference. Many people choose engagement rings and wedding rings that complement one another in shape, color and materials. However, you're free to choose whatever rings appeal to you. On 1stDibs, find a wide range of wedding and engagement rings.
  • 1stDibs ExpertOctober 7, 2024
The difference between a promise ring and an engagement ring is what each type of jewelry symbolizes. An engagement ring represents a promise to marry, usually sometime relatively soon. Promise rings ordinarily mean that a couple would like to one day marry but isn't yet ready to become formally engaged. On 1stDibs, explore a wide variety of engagement rings and promise rings.
  • 1stDibs ExpertMay 30, 2024
What makes an engagement ring an engagement ring is your decision that a particular piece of jewelry represents your promise to get married. There are no rules when it comes to engagement rings. Any ring that appeals to you can serve as a symbol of your engagement. Shop a variety of antique, vintage and contemporary engagement rings on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 8, 2023
Yes, you can wear a diamond ring as a wedding ring if you wish. Your wedding jewelry should reflect your taste and style, so you're free to choose any type of ring you desire. One option is to wear a diamond solitaire as a wedding ring. An eternity wedding band dotted with diamonds is a popular alternative. Many brides opt for two identical eternity bands, wearing one on either side of the engagement ring as guard rings. Shop a wide range of diamond wedding rings on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 1, 2023
Yes, you can use your engagement ring as your wedding ring. Although many people choose to wear a separate wedding band, you're free to have your new spouse slip your engagement ring onto your finger during your wedding ceremony. In this case, you would forego wearing a wedding band entirely. On 1stDibs, shop a selection of antique and vintage engagement rings.
  • 1stDibs ExpertSeptember 23, 2024
To identify your ring, first look at the band’s interior for markings. Most rings have a maker’s mark, but you may need a magnifying glass to see the details clearly. You will usually also find a metal purity hallmark if the ring is made of precious metal. Some rings may have additional markings, such as a serial or style number or place of manufacture. Using trusted online resources, you can often determine the maker of a ring using these pieces of information. However, a certified appraiser or experienced jeweler can assist you if you have any difficulty. Find a wide range of antique, vintage and contemporary rings on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
A Navajo ring is a silver ring crafted with ornate designs. These designs can be simple swirls or complex skulls. The ring features a stone as its centerpiece, usually turquoise, malachite or obsidian. Shop a collection of Navajo jewelry from some of the world’s top sellers on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertOctober 12, 2021
An alliance ring is a band with a row of diamonds on it. This may be a five-stone row or a row that only covers (nearly) half of the band. However, the diamond row might also go all the way around. We call this an alliance ring as long as there is (just) a string of diamonds on the band. Shop a range of antique and vintage alliance rings on 1stDibs.
  • A baguette is a type of diamond cut. A baguette on a ring typically means that the ring is set with a baguette cut diamond. Baguette cut diamonds are classic cuts used as side-stones or accent diamonds.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 2, 2021
A seal ring — or signet ring — is a popular gift for anyone who desires an expressive, timeless piece of jewelry that can feature all manner of engraved motifs, gemstones, specific symbols or monograms. Signet rings get their name from signus, which means “sign” in Latin. The rings, which may historically be referred to as “seal rings,” date back thousands of years and were used as a form of signature. Whatever may have been engraved on the ring — a married couple’s initials, a family crest — identified ownership for the purposes of authenticating documents and more when impressed on soft wax. Find antique and vintage signet rings on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertOctober 5, 2021
A Rolling Ring is a trinity ring, also known as a Russian wedding band. It is a type of ring design that has three interlocking bands. These bands that form the ring are solid metal, which can be two-toned, tri-color, or gold. Find a range of antique and vintage rolling rings on 1tsDibs.
