Pair of Louis XVI Style Fauteuils
Located in New York, NY
Old meets new in this chic pair of Louis XVI style arm chairs in a gilt finish.. We love the restrained elegance of the Louis XVI style, and these chairs feature many of the details characteristic of the style--oval back, lovely carved detail at the die joins (where the base of seat meet the legs) and tapered, fluted legs. We re-upholstered the chairs in a fresh charcoal and white Schumacher stripe, giving these very traditional chairs...

A French pair of timeless and elegant Louis XVI style armchairs from the 19th century. This antique pair of chairs from France each features a shapely, upholstered back, with elegantly arched crest rail, all framed within molded wood trim. Carved wood arms, with manchette pads for comfort, terminate into scrolled knuckles. Front arm supports are embellished with acanthus-leaf carvings. And the skirting mimics the simplistic trim of the back edges, with flower-head carved accents just above the profiled knees. The chairs are raised on four rounded and flute carved legs, which taper gently and sit on toupie feet. This pair of 19th century French Louis XVI style fauteuils...

Genuine Brand New Tolix Stacking Steel Stools '19' Available Dining
Located in Chicago, IL
The Tolix steel stacking stools and steel stacking chairs were originally designed by Xavier Pauchard, better known as Mr. X. In the early 1900’s Xavier perfected a way of protecting sheet metal from rusting and by 1927 had set up a factory selling steel products. The now famous Tolix steel stacking stools and steel stacking chairs were not designed until the 30’s. 1956 was the year that Xavier finally perfected the fully stackable Tolix steel chairs, followed by the Tolix stacking steel stools. They had the ability to be able to stack (12) or more steel chairs and stools safely and that made the Tolix stacking stools and chairs an instant success. We stock the steel Tolix stacking stools (and chairs) in a myriad of colors and in (3) different heights, kitchen island and counter, dining tables and bars. All of the Tolix steel stacking stools and chairs have been stored in a warehouse, or used as showroom samples for many years. Virtually all will have some cosmetic flaws and are priced accordingly. Currently, we have over (1500) pieces of Tolix in stock, both vintage and showroom samples. This particular set of (4) turquoise stools...

Shop Antique and Vintage Chairs on 1stDibs: Lounge Chairs, Dining Chairs and Other Seating for Sale

Chairs are an indispensable component of your home and office. Can you imagine your life without the vintage, new or antique chairs you love?

With the exception of rocking chairs, the majority of the seating in our homes today — Windsor chairs, chaise longues, wingback chairs — originated in either England or France. Art Nouveau chairs, the style of which also originated in those regions, embraced the inherent magnificence of the natural world with decorative flourishes and refined designs that blended both curved and geometric contour lines. While craftsmanship and styles have evolved in the past century, chairs have had a singular significance in our lives, no matter what your favorite chair looks like.

“The chair is the piece of furniture that is closest to human beings,” said Hans Wegner. The revered Danish cabinetmaker and furniture designer was prolific, having designed nearly 500 chairs over the course of his lifetime. His beloved designs include the Wishbone chair, the wingback Papa Bear chair and many more.

Other designers of Scandinavian modernist chairs introduced new dynamics to this staple with sculptural flowing lines, curvaceous shapes and efficient functionality. The Paimio armchair, Swan chair and Panton chair are vintage works of Finnish and Danish seating that left an indelible mark on the history of good furniture design.

“What works good is better than what looks good, because what works good lasts,” said Ray Eames

Visionary polymaths Ray and Charles Eames experimented with bent plywood and fiberglass with the goal of producing affordable furniture for a mass market. Like other celebrated mid-century modern furniture designers of elegant low-profile furnishings — among them Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Finn Juhl — the Eameses considered ergonomic support, durability and cost, all of which should be top of mind when shopping for the perfect chair. The mid-century years yielded many popular chairs.

The Eameses introduced numerous icons for manufacturer Herman Miller, such as the Eames lounge chair and ottoman, molded plywood dining chairs the DCM and DCW (which can be artfully mismatched around your dining table) and a wealth of other treasured pieces for the home and office.

A good chair anchors us to a place and can become an object of timeless appeal. Take a seat and browse the rich variety of vintage, new and antique chairs on 1stDibs today.
