This monumental antique oil on canvas painting was created in France, circa 1790. Set in a carved gilt frame, the large artwork depicts a pastoral scene with the port of Marseilles in the background; it features people playing cards around a table, one lady napping with a dog beside her, another woman with her kid carrying flowers, a man courting a young beauty sitting on a bench, and horses in movement. The inscription on the rider's flag reads "Liberte de L'Escaut 1793," likely referring to the Battle of Raismes (also known as the Battle of Conde or St. Amand) which took place on 8 May 1793, during the Flanders Campaign of the Wars of the French Revolution. It was between the French Republican army and the Allied Coalition army, and resulted in an Allied Victory. A possible signature is not legible in the lower left corner of painting. The monkeys in this set have a great amount of character and joy in their expression with a strong pose. Their hats and jackets appear to have colonial-esque jackets. There’s a strong s-curve pose for the figures as well.

This work, belonging to the famous Florentine painter Raffaello Sorbi, bears the artist's signature at the bottom right and is dated 1863, placing it in his early youthful production. Sorbi's stylistic characteristics are clearly visible, in which the warm Macchiaioli tones blend with neo-Gothic and romantic subjects, taken from the Renaissance and the Middle Ages.
