Grima 18K Yellow Gold and Diamond Ring
Located in Weston, MA
Designed as a stylized flower head, this ring highlights Grima’s post-war innovative techniques emphasizing organic and abstract designs versus the figurative forms of before. This ring seems as modern today as it was when it was made in 1970. It is set with 31 single-cut diamonds weighing a total of approximately 0.77 carats mounted in 18k yellow gold. 18k carat yellow gold Approximately 0.77 carats of diamonds Weighs 9.1 grams Signed “Grima” with “HJCo” maker’s mark Full British hallmarks for London Made in 1970 Size 7 Andrew Grima was one of the most influential jewelry designers of the post-war period. He helped spearhead the mid-century British art jewelry movement and revitalize an industry decimated by World War II deprivations. Entirely self-taught, he rose to prominence in the 1960s, with his sculptural style capturing the free spirit of the times. In 1966 Grima's work came to the attention of the royal family after Lord Snowden purchased several pieces for Princess Margaret, most notably the Balmoral Lichen Brooch. That same year Prince Phillip gave the Queen a carved ruby and diamond brooch (known as the Ruby Venus Brooch...

Tiffany & Co. Blue Book Great Gatsby Onyx and Diamond Ring, 2013
Located in Weston, MA
In 1845 Charles Tiffany introduced the Blue Book, a selection of the American jeweler’s finest offerings and the country’s very first mail-order catalog. The Blue Book subsequently became famous as an annual showcase of the firm’s rarest gemstones and most extraordinary, limited-edition designs. In 2013 Tiffany turned to its extensive archives for the inspiration of The Great Gatsby Collection, a creative collaboration between the jeweler and filmmakers Baz Luhrmann and Catherine Martin to celebrate their adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s Jazz Age classic. The Gatsby Collection jewels are based on pieces made by Tiffany in the 1920s, when they were known as one of the leading arbiters of the new Art Deco style. The jewelry captured the optimistic spirit of the time and featured an extravagant blend of bold, geometric forms and sleek lines designed to accent the streamlined clothing of the most stylish women of the day. With her bobbed hair, bare arms, dressed in sparkling diamonds and cascading ropes of pearls, the classic flapper represented a distinctly modern and independent-minded American aesthetic. This glamorous cocktail ring, one of only two produced, centers on a substantial 8-carat cushion-cut black onyx surrounded by a halo of bezel-set diamonds that call to mind bubbles dancing in champagne. The ring is seen throughout the film on Jordan Baker, Fitzgerald’s representation of the era’s “new” woman – chic and athletic, carefree and self-sufficient. The Jazz Age was a time of exuberant creativity and original thought. Its cultural contributions and iconic designs continue to resonate today. It seems only fitting that this quintessential American jewelry house should revisit their own storied legacy to craft the jewels for Fitzgerald’s masterwork of American fiction as he, himself, was a Tiffany customer...

Edwardian Antique Natural Pearl and Diamond Ring in Platinum, circa 1910
Located in London, GB
A beautiful Edwardian pearl and diamond ring by Gattle, c.1910, the ring vertically set to the front with two brownish-purple round natural saltwater pearls between tapered shoulders set with old cut diamonds all in millegrain settings to an ornately engraved platinum mount with square section band. This elegant and sophisticated ring is set with two lovely pearls of unusual colour with attractive overtones, they are perfectly complimented by the old cut diamonds sprinkled down the sides and the foliate engraving on the ring. Maker Gattle Period Edwardian, circa 1910 Origin America Gemstones 2 x natural saltwater pearls 7.8mm with certificate from the Netherlands Gem Laboratory 24 x old cut diamonds estimated to weigh a combined total of approximately 0.4cts Setting Platinum signed Gattle Weight 5.6 grams Dimensions UK finger size J 1/2, US size 5 Head 16mm tall x 17mm wide inclusive of shoulders Condition Very fine Directors Notes New York jeweller E.M. Gattle &Co. might not be a well known name today but during the first decades of the 20th Century they produced jewellery that rivalled some of the best names in American jewellery at that time such as Tiffany & Co., Marcus & Co. and Raymond Yard. Emanuel Gattle was born in Plattsburg in the far north of New York State in 1858 and left home for the bright lights of the city at just 19. Four years later he opened his eponymous jewellery store at the corner of Broadway and 27th Street. Little information or jewels from his early years survives but he was obviously successful and moved premises to 5th Avenue in 1900. It is his Edwardian and Art Deco jewellery that cemented his reputation and as one of New York’s finest jewellers. Images from the company’s catalogues of ‘The Gattle Building’ show a very large and impressive premises and the pictures of jewels that fill the catalogues pages illustrate a huge range of designs and styles. The Gattle Book from 1914 talks about their re-modelling services for your “old fashioned and discarded pieces of jewellery” and advises clients to send in lists of the pieces they no longer wear in order for Gattle to recommend ways to re-use the stones in more contemporary designs. They go on to state "we import our own gems, design our own mountings, and Gattle Jewelry is developed under the supervision of our own experts." Innovative designs, quality gems and materials and excellent craftsmanship combine to create exceptional pieces. Jewels such as Art Deco wide strap bracelets set with substantial diamonds and emeralds, diamond and jade bracelets, coloured stone rings...

Antique and Vintage Rings, Cocktail Rings and Art Deco Rings for Sale on 1stDibs

Antique and vintage rings have long held a special place in the hearts of fine jewelry lovers all over the world.

No matter their origin or specific characteristics, rings are timeless, versatile accessories. They’ve carried deep meaning since at least the Middle Ages, when diamond rings symbolized strength and other kinds of rings were worn to signify romantic feelings or to denote an affiliation with a religious order. Rings have also forever been emblematic of eternity.

Over time, rings have frequently taken the form of serpents, which have long been associated with eternal life, health and renewal. Italian luxury jewelry house Bulgari has become famous for its widely loved Serpenti motif, for example, and its Serpenti ring, like the other accessories in the collection, began as an homage to jewelry of the Roman and Hellenistic eras. The serpent is now a popular motif in fine jewelry. Jewelry devotees have long pined for rings adorned with reptiles, thanks to antique Victorian rings — well, specifically, Queen Victoria’s illustrious engagement ring, which took the form of a gold snake set with rubies, diamonds and an emerald (her birthstone). Designs for Victorian-era engagement rings often featured repoussé work and chasing, in which patterns are hammered into the metal.

Engagement rings, which are reliably intimidating to shop for, are still widely recognized as symbols of love and commitment. On 1stDibs, a range of buying guides can be found for those in the market for antique engagement ringsvintage engagement rings or Art Deco engagement rings

The most collectible antique engagement rings and vintage engagement rings are those from the Victorian, Edwardian and Art Deco eras. Named for the monarchies of the four King Georges, who in succession ruled England starting in 1714 (plus King William’s reign), antique Georgian rings, be they engagement rings or otherwise, are also coveted by collectors. Pearls, along with colored gemstones like garnets, rubies and sapphires, were widely used in Georgian jewelry. The late-1700s paste jewelry was a predecessor to what we now call fashion or costume jewelry

The Art Nouveau movement (1880–1910) brought with it rings inspired by the natural world. Antique Art Nouveau rings might feature depictions of winged insects and fauna as well as women, who were simultaneously eroticized and romanticized, frequently with long flowing hair. Art Deco jewelry, on the other hand, which originated during the 1920s and ’30s, is by and large “white jewelry.” White metals, primarily platinum, were favored over yellow gold in the design of antique Art Deco rings and other accessories as well as geometric motifs, with women drawn to the era’s dazzling cocktail rings in particular.
