Scandinavian Modern Side Chairs

SCANDINAVIAN MODERN STYLE

Scandinavian modernism is perhaps the warmest and most organic iteration of modernist design. The work of the designers associated with vintage Scandinavian modern furniture was founded on centuries-old beliefs in both quality craftsmanship and the ideal that beauty should enhance even the humblest accessories of daily life.

ORIGINS OF SCANDINAVIAN MODERN FURNITURE DESIGN

CHARACTERISTICS OF SCANDINAVIAN MODERN FURNITURE DESIGN

  • Bold, clean lines and simple, sturdy symmetries
  • Use of natural materials — native woods such as pine, ash and beech
  • Open, airy spaces
  • Promotion of functionality
  • Emphasis on craftsmanship; rooted in cabinetry profession and traditional construction techniques
  • Minimal ornamentation (little to no embellishment)
  • A neutral or light color palette owing to prominence of light woods

ICONIC SCANDINAVIAN MODERN FURNITURE DESIGNS

VINTAGE SCANDINAVIAN MODERN FURNITURE ON 1STDIBS

The gentle, organic contours that are typical of Scandinavian design appear in the furnishings and decor created by Danish, Finnish and Swedish designers not as a stylistic gesture, but rather as a practical, ergonomic — and, as importantly, elegant — response to the human form.

Each nation produced exceptional talents in all areas of the applied arts, yet each had its forté. Sweden was home to Greta Magnusson Grossman and Bruno Mathsson — creators of the classic Grasshopper lighting series and Berlin daybed, respectively — but the country excelled most notably at ceramics. In the 1920s at the great Gustavsberg porcelain manufactory, Wilhelm Kåge introduced pieces in the Scandinavian style based on influences from folklore to Cubism; his skills were passed on to his versatile and inspired pupils Berndt Friberg and Stig Lindberg.

Likewise, Finland produced a truly ingenious Scandinavian modern furniture designer in the architect Alvar Aalto, a master at melding function and artistic form in works like the Paimio chair, created in collaboration with his first wife, Aino. Yet Finnish glassware was pre-eminent, crafted in expressive, sculptural designs by Tapio Wirkkala and Timo Sarpaneva.

The Danes excelled at chairs. Hans Wegner and Arne Jacobsen were exemplars of the country’s facility with wood, particularly teak

Wegner created such iconic pieces as the Round chair and the Wishbone chair; Jacobsen — while the revolutionary architect and furniture innovator produced the best-selling plywood Ant chair — designed two classic upholstered pieces of the 1950s: the Swan chair and Egg chair. The list of great Danes could go on and on, including Finn Juhl, a stylistic maverick and maker of the bold Chieftain chair; Poul Kjaerholm, with his lean metal-and-rattan aesthetic; and Verner Panton, who introduced a vibrant Pop note into international design.

Today, decades after their heyday, the prolific, ever-evolving Scandinavian modernists continue to amaze and delight, and interior designers all over the world use their pieces to bring warmth to any given space.

On 1stDibs, you will note both instantly recognizable vintage Scandinavian modern chairs, sofas, rugs and tables — those that have earned iconic status over time — and many new discoveries.

Steel Tube Chair Designed by Sven Markelius for Ds Staal Sweden, 1930s
By DS Stålrörsmöbler, Sven Markelius
Located in Valby, 84
Rare and important Steel tube side chair designed by Sven Markelius for DS Staal in Sweden in the 1930s, the chair is designed in the 1930s for the EPA Bar in Stockholm. This chair is a good example of how the Bauhaus school inspired many Scandinavian Architects like Sven Markelius, Frits Schlegel, Vilhelm Lauritzen and many others. Literature: Eva Rudberg. 'Sven Markelius Architect', Arkitektur Förlag 1989, pictured p. 90. Ingrid Sommar. 'Stockholm Modern', Wahlström & Widstrand 1998, pictured p. 184. Sven Markelius used a stool in a similar design for the Helsingborg Concert Hall in 1932. In 1936, Markelius was commissioned to transform an old shop in Drottninggatan, Stockholm, into an Epa bar, where this chair was found. Enhets Pris Aktiebolaget (EPA) was presumably satisfied, because Markelius was given other tasks by EPA in the following years. 1937 to Epa-bar, Sweden. Literature: Dan Gordan: the Swedish chair, p. 97 The chair is in a beautiful original condition with patinated natural leather and chromed steel tubes in good condition. Sven Markelius was a big and important part of Swedish functionalism. Sven Markelius was educated from 1909 to 1913 at the Royal Technical University in Stockholm and at the Academy of fine Arts and subsequently went on study trips to Germany and Italy. He then underwent solid training with the architects Ragnar Östberg, Erik Lallerstedt and Ivar Tengbom...

Six Restored Kai Kristiansen Oak Dining Chairs Custom Reupholstery Included
Located in Knebel, DK
Set of six restored and refinished dining chairs in oak with adjustable backrest by Kai Kristiansen for Schous Møbelfabrik. The chairs have Kai Kristiansens typical light and elegant design that make them fit in easily where you want them in your home, a design that was so unique that his colleague the famous designer Hans J. Wegner characterized model 42 as beautiful from all angles when the chair was revealed in 1956. The chairs have been fully restored, sanded and refinished by our experienced workshop to insure that they are in very good condition with only minimal signs of age and use and will be reupholstered without additional cost in fabric of your choice from "Kvadrat" / standard leathers from "Sorensen Leather" or for additional price luxury leathers (Elegance, Vegetal, Rustic, Pure and Royal Nubuck). Kai Kristiansen was one of the last pupils of the famous architect Kaare Klint who founded modern Danish design and laid the foundation for the "Danish Modern" style. During the years 1958-1978 Kristiansen worked in his business in Aarhus owned jointly by himself and furniture maker Illum Wikkelsø (1919-1999). Kristiansens works met their most intense demand during a few decades from 1950, then production of them was discontinued. However, several of them are now being produced again by the Japanese furniture producer Miyazaki Chair Mill in Tokushima. An Australian producer has also included Kristiansen production in their portfolio. Kai Kristiansen might have been the originator of mass produced furniture, had he accepted an offer from Ikea-founder Ingvar Kamprad. He declined to let himself enroll in the Ikea staff. Kristiansen exhibitions include numerous participations in furniture and design shows in Milano, Paris, Cologne and London. Among his most cherished works is the Paper Knife collection...

Eight Restored Kai Kristiansen Teak Dining Chairs Custom Reupholstery Included
Located in Knebel, DK
Kai Kristiansen set of eight fully restored teak dining chairs by Schou Andersens Møbel Fabrik including custom upholstery. The A-frame model 31 dining chairs were designed by Kai Kristiansen in 1956 for Schou-Andersens Møbelfabrik and the A-frame chair is one of the most well-known chairs designed by Kai Kristiansen - a true Classic with its modest appearence but advanced design with curved backrest, crooked angles, straight yet at the same time curved and bended lines... and on top of that as all of Kai Kristiansens chairs very comfortable in use. The chairs have been fully restored by our skilled cabinetmakers - all joints checked and reglued if needed which it often is, frames sanded by hand 2 - 3 times and waxed to bring out the natural warm glow in the teak wood in order to insure that they are in very good condition with only minimal signs of age and use. The chairs will be reupholstered with out additional cost in fabric of your choice from a wide list of "Kvadrat" or "Romo" fabrics or standard leathers from "Sorensen Leather" / "Camo Leather" before they are shipped. Kai Kristiansen who is still alive was born in 1929 and raised in Thy, North Denmark. Originally a carpenter, Kristiansen was educated as a building architect at the Royal Academi of Arts in Copenhagen and graduated from here in 1954. His father was the propritetor of at furniture production company, so his interest in furniture was founded early. Kristiansen was one of the last pupils of the famous architect Kaare Klint who died in 1959 and is considered the founder of modern Danish design.
