Neglected for most of her career, Eileen Gray (1878-1976) is now regarded as one of the most important furniture designers and architects of the early twentieth century and the most influential woman in those fields. Her work inspired both modernism and Art Deco.
Eileen Gray was to stand alone throughout her career, first as a lacquer artist, then a furniture designer, and finally as an architect. At a time when other leading designers were almost all male and mostly members of one movement or another - whether a loose grouping like De Stijl in the Netherlands, or a formal one such as the Congrès Internationaux d'Architecture Moderne - Gray remained staunchly independent.
Her design style was as distinctive as her way of working. Gray developed an opulent, luxuriant take on the geometric forms and industrially produced materials used by the International Style designers, such as Le Corbusier, Charlotte Perriand and Mies van der Rohe, who shared much of her ideology. An exceptional example of mid-20th-century naval navigation technology, this U.S. Navy Bureau of Ships Self-Synchronizing Alidade Pelorus Stand was manufactured by the renowned Sperry Gyroscope Company, Brooklyn, New York, a key supplier of precision instruments for the U.S. military.
This instrument, Mark XXXI, Mod 0, Serial No. 320420, was built under Navy contract NXss 17019 and bears its original inspection tags, confirming it passed rigorous Navy testing before deployment.
The pelorus stand is crafted in a striking combination of polished aluminum and solid brass, featuring a protective domed brass cover that reveals a beautifully preserved gyrocompass repeater dial. Designed to interface with a ship’s gyrocompass, the self-synchronizing mechanism allowed navigators to take precise bearings on landmarks, celestial objects, or other ships—critical for accurate positioning before the advent of modern satellite navigation.
This piece reflects the height of WWII and early Cold War-era maritime engineering, used aboard larger Navy vessels to aid in navigation and fire control plotting. The manifesto aspect is rather limited, since Hicks is not a great believer in aesthetic rules or the value of so-called good taste, but as a souvenir album, it charts Hicks's personal creative journey of the last few years, illustrated with photographs of some favorite historical interiors and objects that represent a mixture of source material and inspiration.
The book's twelve chapters reveal Hicks's creative process, how he approaches different themes in his own interiors, furniture designs, and works of art, and how these themes can be applied to the works of others. Such subjects as flowers, color, layers, form, pattern, and memory are presented in the context of actual projects. Historical and recent interiors are discussed for their decorative value--notable rooms and architecture include the Pantheon in Rome; Emperor Maximilian's tomb in Innsbruck; the Royal Pavilion, Brighton; and the Petit Trianon at Versailles. Hicks has created a book for devotees of decorating and the history of interior design.
